Johan Hedberg was originally drafted 218th overall in the 1994 Entry Draft by the Philadelphia Flyers. Four years later, his rights were traded on August 6, 1998 to the San Jose Sharks for a seventh-round draft pick. On March 12, 2001, Johan was traded with Bobby Dollas to the Pittsburgh Penguins for Jeff Norton. Four nights later, he made his NHL debut and stopped 41 shots in a 6-3 win over the Panthers. He played nine games down the stretch and posted a 7-1-1 record with a 2.64 GAA and 90.5 save percentage. In the playoffs, he led the Penguins to the Eastern Conference finals.
