Milan Hnilicka was originally drafted 70th overall in the 1991 Entry Draft by the New York Islanders. Eight years later, after having played in the Islanders system as well as signing and playing with teams in the Czech Extraliga, Milan signed as a free agent with the New York Rangers on July 15, 1999. That year, he made his NHL debut on October 14 against the Penguins. On April 9, he played his second game and made 39 saves against the Flyers. On July 28, 2000, Milan signed as a free agent with the Atlanta Thrashers. On November 4, Milan earned his first win in an 8-3 victory over the Bruins. Eleven nights later, he earned his first shutout with 37 saves against the Predators (1-0 win). In his first full NHL season with the second-year club, Milan set club records with a 3.35 goals-against average, 12 wins and two shutouts.
