Jani Hurme was drafted 58th overall in the 1997 Entry Draft by the Ottawa Senators. At the end of the 1999-2000 season, he made his NHL debut on April 9 in a 5-2 win over the Lightning. The following season, Jani posted a 12-5-4 record as Patrick Lalime's goaltending partner as the Senators won the Northeast Division title with a club record 48 wins and 109 points. On October 27, he made 24 saves in a 6-0 win over the Lightning for his first shutout.
