Brent Johnson was originally drafted 129th overall in the 1995 Entry Draft by the Colorado Avalanche. On May 30, 1997, his rights were traded to the St. Louis Blues for a third-round draft pick. In 1998-99, Brent made his NHL debut on February 16 against the Canucks. Ten nights later, he earned his first win in a match against the Flames. In six games, Brent posted a 3-2 record with a 2.10 goals-against average. After a full year in the minors, Brent joined the Blues full-time in 2000-01 as Roman Turek's goaltending partner. That year, he posted a 19-9-2 record and ranked fifth in the league with a 2.17 GAA.
