Subs come to the rescue

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Suddenly, it seems clear what was wrong with the Flyers at the start of the season. Not enough key players were hurt.

It seems like a million years ago now, but the drive to last season's Eastern Conference championship really got going in March, when Craig Ramsay managed to pull several ugly-but-solid efforts out of a vastly depleted lineup. The Flyers developed the elusive chemistry that eventually sustained them through two playoff rounds and all sorts of crises.

Last night felt like last spring. The Flyers were missing John LeClair (back surgery), Mark Recchi (concussion), Keith Primeau (concussion), Rick Tocchet (bruised ankle tendon), Keith Jones (concussion) and Chris Therien (back strain). Yet they ground out a 1-1 tie with the defending Stanley Cup champion New Jersey Devils, gaining the point on Paul Ranheim's stirring goal with 1:26 left in regulation.  For the rest of the story click here.
