Richard Harding Davis
(1864-1916)
The world has produced few individuals that can match up to Richard Harding Davis. Although some critics have dismissed his work as mere journalism, it was far above that. His stories tackle some of the profoundest social problems facing the world at that time, and display a judiciousness and fair-play that is missing from today's journalism. Davis's early works, and much of his later, are set in and around New York City. His best fiction, however, takes place in exotic locales, such as Cuba, Tangiers, the Congo, and Continental Europe. His works are voluminous, and were collected twice during his lifetime. Some of his principal books include Captain Macklin (1902), The Scarlet Car (1907), The White Mice (1909), and Vera the Medium (1908). He also wrote one of the first biographies of Sir Winston Churchill. His style is crisp and concise, and his tales fast-moving. As an individual, Davis was probably one of the most remarkable characters of the 20th century. In recent years, there has been a surprising revival of interest in his life and works.
