Deceased Name: Stephen L. Gumport, Surgeon, Is Dead at 75
Dr. Stephen L. Gumport, a cancer surgeon in Manhattan for almost 50 years, died of Lyme disease and complications from heart surgery Sunday at New York University Medical Center. He was 75 years old and lived in Manhattan.
Dr. Gumport, a 1938 graduate of Cornell University's medical school, had been director of the Cancer Rehabilitation Service of the Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine at the medical center since 1981.
He began teaching surgery at the New York University School of Medicine in 1949 and was in private practice until contracting Lyme disease in 1980. He spent six years in the Army Medical Corps.
He is survived by his wife, Margot; four sons, Leonard, of Pasadena, Calif., Michael, of Summit, N.J., and Jonathan and Daniel, both of Manhattan, and eight grandchildren.
