How Psychology Works

There are many ways to break down abnormal mental health to try and cure it. But what is the best way to examine the root of the problem? There are many models to help one do so. So many people have tried to fix and heal the sick for many years. But who really has it all figured out? Who is the best when it comes to stabilizing the sick so they can return to a normal life again? Which one actually works the best for which problem? Some opinions vary to how these different methods and models are used to heal cure the sick. Two sites that I looked at helped break down that question. Some may disagree with them, but that is just how the argument usually is.

I am a fan of Sigmund Freud. The site, Sigmund Freud and the Freud Archives, delivers facts about the man himself. (http://users.rcn.com/brill/freudarc.html) He is a key player in modern-day psychology. I tried to find some little known facts about him. This web site has all of the facts and myths about the man and his work. His work is what people remember most about him. Most of the links on the site did not work because most of the sites were down. However, I did manage to scrape up what little information I could find. Freud gave the world of psychology psycho-sexual themes and dream interpretation. He said that one’s dreams were the source of their problems. Dreams are apart of the human subconscious. Freud believed that one’s subconscious and problems came from something in our childhood. Sounds like a noble concept, right? Some agree with Freud while others think that he was crazy. Whether he was crazy or not is all up to the person individually. But either way one looks at him and his work, Freud perfectly fits into the second chapter that we are studying in class at the moment.

Another good site for the eternal quest of psychology is The Dana Foundation. (http://www.dana.org/resources/brainweb/default.aspx) There are many topics to look through on this site. It covers everything from addiction to stress. Each topic has different articles addressing the matter. One article I found interesting on the subject of addiction was How Addiction Hijacks Our Reward System by Cynthia M. Kuhn, and Wilkie A. Wilson. They break down the very cycle of the disease known as addiction. The article proves that addiction is a dangerous and deadly disease. The Dana Foundation even links physical aliments such as headaches and stroke with mental health. I did not believe it was possible until I saw the articles for them. Everything one wants to know about mental health and illness is right on this site. Due to the number of topics on this site, The Dana Foundation is the perfect tool to help my class and I break down mental illness even further.

There are many questions in psychology. The answers are a long journey to get to the root of the problem. Some answers maybe easy and hiding in plain sight. Others are complex and well-hid from the patient themselves. Sometimes there is not really an answer to begin with. The answers are all in the right model and the right people. The real challenge is to find the one that fits the problem the most.
