Five Brothers |
Look, Grampa, Ive never seen anything like it. The boy was fifteen and knew a great deal about the world.
Yes, its very unusual for five trees of different types to grow together like that. People call them the five brothers.
There were five trees grouped in a circle. Tall and straight they seemed to twine about each other; especially the wisteria, which had twined around the other four, binding them together.
No one knows where they came from or why they are here on the Winner estate. The wisteria is called Duo for some reason. Theres lots of it around, and all the cuttings came from that one. Its the only one to have two tone flowers of purple-lavender and that special shade of blue. Said the old man, who was eighty and knew very little about the world.
Someone must have planted them. I wish I knew who. Ill do some research. Someone must know something. Come on, Grampa.
The two ambled away in companionable silence.

Wu, what is wisteria and why did they give us sticks?
Duo eyed the whip curiously.
Wufei smiled at Duo. The pilots had been honored in a renewal ceremony at the local veterans club. The young trees were symbolic of the renewal of the peace concord.
Quatre, Heero and Trowa had also received whips of different types. Heero an oak, Quatre a chestnut, Trowa a yew and Wufei, for some reason, a Japanese maple
Duo examined the bare root whip with misgivings. Still dont understand why they gave us a stick from a tree. No one explains anything.
They arent sticks, theyre baby trees. If we plant them soon enough, theyll grow. We should plant them in the park.
So the five found themselves in the outlying estate. They carefully dug holes and planted the whips never noticing that they had planted the wisteria in the middle of a ring of the other four trees.
The five young men gathered up their tools and ambled away in companionable silence.
