Disney buys Marvel, and Warner Brothers form DC Entertainment.

On August 31rst, 2009, an announcement was made that undoubtedly will be the comic book news of the decade. Disney bought Marvel for 4 billion dollars. The deal will most likely be finalized by the end of the year. Since then the internet has filled with predictions on what will come of this deal, but it's all speculation at this point. Disney CEO Robert A. Iger did mention that representatives from Marvel and Pixar already had initial meetings, that apparently were very exciting. However as mentioned it's too soon for any formal announcements.

From a crossover point of view, Disney cartoon characters aside, Tron, Gargoyles, and Crossgen are all Disney properties. So potentially there could be crossovers between those properties and Marvel.

DC Entertainment

In the wake of the above announcement, Warner Brothers issued a press release on September 9th about the creation of DC entertainment. This corporate restructuring has been planned for a while, and was to be announced next year. However, given the previous news they decided to go public now. The plan for DC Entertainment is to maximize DC properties across all media. DC and Warner brothers were often criticized by fans over the years for not making more movies of their characters. Hopefully that will now change. Given the decision to announce early, no formal plans from DC Entertainment have been announced. A production slate will be released early next year, as originally planned.

On an interesting note it was revealed that a Superman movie is still not in the works. Due to various legal wrangling, a Superman movie must be made by 2011, or the heirs of Superman's creators can sue for damages. More details can be read here.

The new division will be led by Diane Nelson, who previously oversaw the Harry Potter film franchise for Warner Brothers.
