When you and I first crossed paths
I charged about like a bull.
"That man and I would just not fit", you said,
"For surely we would both be dead."

But as we worked together
some how we were transformed,
the beast in me seemed to be tamed,
and now tis rare to hear the roar.

Some how we work together
in a way that's quite unique
There is a part of me released
when you are near that quells the mighty beast.

You have shown a world to me
that I have hid away from.
"I do not want to know their names
or where it is they come from."

Since I've known you I see in me
a change that other too have seen,
that in me there's a person
who really cares how other people seem.

From time to time I have been caught
in conversations deep,
with students whose names I claim
never to be able to repeat.

I am not the only one
who has been changed by Us,
for there are parts of you
that with me too have grown.

Like a sounding board I sit
and echo back your thoughts,
And let your fertile mind release
a creativity hard fought.

Together we have tried things
that neither one alone
would ever have dared try and in the trying,
together we have grown.

There is a term in science
that I learned long ago,
about a bonding that produces
much more than parts alone.

Two organisms that bind in ways unique
each one drawing from the other
to make each one, more than one complete.
No ordinary feat!

These puzzle pieces interlock
and in the coupling grow
beyond the puzzles frame
in a synergistic flow.

Yes, you and I would just not fit,
in the frames that we have known
for when we come together
there is more than the sum of two alone.
