Chapter 5: Feeling Better

Once she got home Jesse sat outside in her front yard just crying and crying. She missed Tony already. As she was sitting there she heard footsteps coming up the sidewalk.

“Jes?” she then heard Taylor say.

“Hey Tay, what are you doing out here so late?” she asked trying to make herself sound as normal as possible.

“I was just about to ask you the same thing. I couldn’t sleep, so I decided to go for a walk.”

“Oh, I just got home.”

“What’s wrong Jes?”

“Nothing.”

“It may not be daytime, but even in this darkness it looks like you’ve been crying. What’s wrong?” he sat down next to her on the grass.

“Tony…..just broke up with me,” she said and then a new set of tears started to fall. Taylor put his arm around her and she leaned into him, laying her head on his chest.

“I’m sorry,” Tay said.

“I didn’t even see it coming. I mean yesterday everything was fine between us. And now…” her voice trailed off . She couldn’t really talk cuz she was crying so hard.

“Shhh, it’s okay. Everything will be fine,” Taylor said wrapping his other arm around her and gently rocking back and forth. They sat out there like that on the grass for almost an hour. Nothing was spoken in that hour. Taylor just held Jes in his arms as she cried. He felt so bad for her, and wished that there was something he could do to cheer her up, but there was nothing. The next morning around 8:00 Taylor went across the street to go see how Jesse was.

“Hey, Taylor,” Rayna said opening the door.

“Hey, Ray. Is your sister home?” he asked.

“Which one?”

“Jesse.”

“Yeah, she’s up in her room. She won’t come out though, and she won’t answer the door.”

“That’s okay, I’ll take my chances,” he walked inside.

“Do you know what’s wrong with her? She won’t tell us.”

“Well yeah, but I shouldn’t be the one to tell you. You’re just gonna have to wait until she’s ready to tell you.”

“Okay, whatever.”

Taylor went up to Jesse’s room and knocked on the door softly.

“Jes? It’s Tay. Can I please come in,” he said. He heard the door unlock so he turned the nob and went inside. Jes was sitting on her bed. Her eyes were all red and puffy.

“Hey,” he said smiling.

“Hey,” she said smiling weakly.

“How are you doing?” he asked taking a seat next to her on the bed.

“Not so good.”

“That’s understandable. Is there anything I can do for you?”

“No, I just feel like sitting here.”

“I don’t know if this’ll mean anything to you, but I know exactly how you feel.”

“How?”

“I dated this one girl for about 2 years like you and Tony did. Then one day out of the blue she dumped me. I was so in love with her too. I just totally fell apart. She was my first girlfriend and she’s been my only girlfriend, but that’s not because I hate girls now or anything. I just haven’t had time for another one.”

“So how did you get over her?”

“Well I spent a few days locked in my room, getting rid of everything that reminded me of her. Then I went out and started doing things with my friends. Soon all that pain that I felt was gone. I guess the saying ‘Out of sight, out of mind’ is true.”

“That will be hard for me though since Tony and I are in a band together.”

“Yes, but you guys are taking a break now. So he’s back in California and you’re here. He’s out of sight for a while. I can promise you that if you stay locked up here in your room you’ll just continue to feel bad. If you get up and do something though, you will soon start to feel better.” Jesse thought about what he said for awhile.

“Well will you stay with me?”

“Sure, I’ll go anywhere you want to go. Do anything you want to do.”

“Okay,” Jes got up from her bed and walked over to the door, “I’m starving!” Taylor laughed and then followed her downstairs.

Once Jesse got some food in her stomach she got some energy.

“I wanna go to the mall. Spending money on clothes and things I don’t need always makes me feel better,” Jes said as she put her dishes in the sink.

“Sounds good to me. I need to buy a new CD anyways,” Taylor said.

“Where are you going? Can I come?” Rayna asked walking into the kitchen.

“To the mall and no,” Jesse said.

“Why not?”

“Because Taylor and I have some talking to do. Maybe next time.”

“That’s not fair.”

“Yes it is.” Jes then went and got ready and they were off to the mall.
