WALLACE BROWN SCHERER

Wallace was born the second of four sons to Tilden and Jean Scherer in Bristol, Tennessee. His father was president of King College during those years. See Tilden's web page.

He graduated from Bristol High School and started college at King. He studied at Austin College in Texas when his father took a brief job there, then went on to Davidson College in North Carolina from which he graduated in 1940.See pictures from Davidson reunion.

Wallace went on to get his Master's degree in parapsychology from Duke University, studying under Dr. J.B. Rhine.

Immediately after finishing, he entered military service in the Army Air Corps. On April 20, 1943, he married Sara Wideman Denny from Cross Hill, South Carolina, whom he had met while a student at Davidson College.

Their honeymoon was a trip to Santa Ana, California, his first military duty station. There, as a Tech. Sergeant, he helped develop psychological tests for prospective pilots. Later he was assigned to a base in San Antonio, Texas.

On discharge, they moved to Wilson, North Carolina where he taught psychology at Atlantic Christian College. Later he moved to Richmond, Virginia where he taught psychology at the Richmond Professional Institute, now Virginia Commonwealth University. He continued to live in Richmond while he raised his two children and started a business called Psychological Instruments Company, which he operated until his retirement in 1979.

Summer time often meant a week's vacation at Virginia Beach, about two hours away by highway and ferry.

During the Richmond years, Wallace was active in Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church where he sang in the adult choir. He also founded and ran Psychological Instruments Company. (See link below.)

Upon reaching retirement age (65) he and Sara packed up, sold the house, and moved to Palm Beach County, Florida, where his brother Mike lived, and where their daughter Sally was also living. Soon after arriving he bought some land, and designed and built his own house. See house construction pictures

He contributed on occasion to Pastor Stanke's "Science and the Bible" study at his church, Fellowship Orthodox Presbyterian.

Wallace was a man who enjoyed life. He was always encouraging to his children and grandchildren. He inspired them to strive to achieve whatever they wanted in life. Although weakened by his physical condition in his last years, he kept trying to be a positive, cheerful influence on others.
