Aaron Carter's Family Affairs
Monday, November 4, 2002

At just 14, pop star Aaron Carter already has sold over 10 million records. The junior achiever just shot the video for his new single "Do You Remember," from his fourth album Another Earthquake. Yes, it's more of that tween dream fare that stirs the hearts of middle-school girls - and more than a few guilty grown-ups!

"It's got some similarities to my other albums, but it's a lot different," he tells TV Guide Online. "The ballads are different and my voice has gotten a little more mature. I'm not braggin' or anything, but I finally learned how to sing!"

At least the little bro of Backstreet Boy Nick Carter is honest. "Believe it or not," he says, "my voice changed probably about a year ago, and I'm just working around it." When we tell Aaron it sounds like he's had a Peter Brady experience, he shrugs - yeah, 'cause he's too young to remember The Brady Bunch! This makes us feel really old.

Er, movin' on... Is it true Nick and Aaron are extra-competitive now that they both have solo crooning careers? "Nick has not released his solo album [Now or Never] yet," Aaron notes. "Hey, he'll do okay, but he won't beat me!" Smiling, the good-natured lad adds: "For real, in all honesty, I'm looking forward to having my brother do great. I'll wish for my solo career and his to succeed."

On the TV front, Aaron's dipping his toe in the WB's youngster-friendly waters. "I just got finished doing an episode of Family Affair that airs in February," he says. "I play Liam, Sissy's first date. I'm the good guy. I'm supposedly the hottest guy in the school." Aww... and modest too! - Daniel R. Coleridge - Courtesy- TV Guide Online

Hitlist's "Year End Countdown" is coming up and Aaron needs YOUR vote! You can only vote ONCE and for ONE video. So if you haven't already, email hitlist@ytv.com and vote for "I'M ALL ABOUT YOU" by AARON CARTER for the YEAR END COUNTDOWN!

CAN YOU SAVE MY BACKYARD??
Fourteen-year-old Aaron Carter is a pop sensation with best-selling CDs like
Oh Aaron and Another Earthquake! But he also helps conservationists spread the
word to protect one of Earth's most invaluable resources.

When Aaron Carter roams around his neighborhood, he sees houses, restaurants,
and shopping malls. But part of the view also includes mangrove trees crowding
the coast, tiny Key deer hiding among trees, and roseate terns wheeling
overhead. Aaron lives in one of Earth's most diverse ecoregions - large
geographical areas defined by features like type of soil, climate, and plant
and animal communities: the Everglades and Florida Keys. "My family moved to
the Keys because of its spectacular beauty," Aaron says.

Scientists would agree. "There's no system like this in the world," says
biologist Tom Armentano of the Everglades National Park. "It's a wilderness
despite the fact it shares common boundaries with densely populated areas."
But this proximity between humans and nature has exacted a harsh toll on the
once pristine environment: "I went on a research trip to a remote island in
Florida Bay to check out the health of this really cool bird called a roseate
spoonbill," says Aaron. "There used to be thousands of them in the Keys and
Florida Bay, but huge changes in how water flows through the Everglades have
really messed up their survival rate."

For thousands of years, South Florida was a 4-million-acre subtropical wetland
(waterlogged area) teeming with dense flocks of wading birds, sea turtles, and
crocodiles. Then pioneers flocked to the region in the 1800s, clearing it for
farmlands. And in the late 1940s, to keep pace with the demands of a booming
population, the U.S. government built levees (flood walls) and canal systems,
which diverted water and drained marshes to create drier soils for farming.
"But these changes disturbed the whole system and endangered its wildlife,"
says Debbie Harrison of World Wildlife Fund.

Today, the Everglades is one third of its historical size. And 600 of South
Florida's plants and animal species are rare or threatened, according to the
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. In addition, 68 species, including the Florida
panther, snail kite, and Key deer are endangered (at risk of extinction).
Today, conservationists are striving to devise strategies to deal with a
growing environmental crisis. "This is a really special place in the world,"
says Aaron. "We need to make sure it's taken care of."

RIVER OF GRASS
Historically, during the rainy season from June to November, heavy rainwater
would gush down the Kissimmee River to fill Lake Okeechobee. Water overflowed
the southern rim to flood wide flat grassland. Known as the "river of grass,"
the Everglades-rarely more than 61 centimeters (2 feet) deep-slinked south.
Its water drained up to 800 meters (0.5 mile) per day into the Florida Bay.

Along the way, the river filled sloughs, or deep marshes, submerged sawgrass
prairies, and surrounded raised hammocks (hardwood islands). Under natural
conditions, the season of flooding alternated with a long, dry spell. Water
levels receded and wading birds, raccoons, and alligators clamored to
remaining pools of water to feast on trapped fish.

Today, most rainfall on the system's northern edge barely flows into the
remaining patch of the Everglades. "It's pumped into canals, carried into
developed areas and reservoirs, or dumped into the ocean," says Armentano.
This deprives many species of the pools of water they depend on for
food-especially critical during dry months.

The limited amount of freshwater that still flows through the Everglades and
trickles into Florida Bay-an estuary (place where freshwater mixes with
saltwater)-has caused an imbalance in the bay's salinity (salt levels). "One
of the world's major shrimping grounds is in the Gulf of Mexico-it's a major
food source for humans," says Armentano. Pink shrimp, for example, spend their
post-larval stage, an immature phase of life, off the tip of the Everglades.
"And they require the right conditions to live."

In addition, agricultural and industrial pollutants like mercury, phosphorous,
and nitrogen have been found in water draining from the Everglades, causing
many fish populations and sea grasses-a vital food source for the endangered
manatee-to die off. The polluted runoff continues to flow south from Florida
Bay into the Florida Keys.

Aaron Carter knows this water well. "I have always loved oceans and the marine
environment," he says. And when he's not touring in concerts, he swims,
kayaks, and snorkels in the Keys. "The Keys are home to the world's third
largest coral barrier reef and some of the world's greatest sunsets!" Many
fish species live in this reef ecosystem. "My favorite is the blacktip reef
shark," says Aaron. "It's fast, sleek, only takes what it needs, and rules the
reef!" But water pollution is threatening the entire coral reef ecosystem.

RESCUE CALL
One critical piece in this complex survival puzzle is humans. South Florida's
soaring population depends on rain collected south of the Kissimmee River
basin-including the Everglades-for drinking water. Of the estimated 100 to 165
cm (40 to 65 inches) that falls each year, nearly 100 percent evaporates,
transpires (evaporates through plants), or is lost to run-off. More troubling,
the current water systems direct billions of tons of freshwater into the ocean
each day. "A huge amount of that wasted water needs to be restored back into
the Everglades, where it belongs-or we'll run out of water for humans too,"
says Harrison.

Is the Everglades' future beyond rescue? No. Two years ago, the state and
federal government appropriated billion for the Comprehensive Everglades
Restoration Plan. "It's a massive plan and actually involves 64 individual
engineering projects that will change how water is managed from Lake
Okeechobee all the way down to Florida Bay," says Armentano.

The undertaking will take decades to complete. In their attempt to figure out
the delicate balance of human, animal, and environmental needs, scientists are
using computer models to project figures like human population and water
supply requirements by the year 2050. At the same time, they're doing
fieldwork to gain clues about how the complex ecoregion once operated.
"Hopefully, we'll be able to restore the Everglades closer to its natural
pattern," Armentano says.

Saving the Everglades and South Florida ecoregion means a lot to Aaron Carter.
"I'm always talking to my friends and family about how important it is to take
care of it," he says. "Now I'm talking to kids across America: Let's take
care of our waters and oceans."

Two-Headed Monster and Elmo when filming an episode of Sesame Street last

AC Interview by PBS Kids

What's your favorite thing about Liberty's Kids?
It has a positive moral. It's basically a fun way to show history, and to teach kids about American history.

How did you get to sing the Liberty's Kids theme song?
I was approached by David Foster, who wrote the song. Actually, his wife wrote the song. He wrote, I think, the music for it. He produced it with me. He called us up and asked me if I wanted to be a part of it. So I said, "Yeah." I thought it would be cool.

What do you like to do when you're not singing?
When I'm not singing, I like to ride dirt bikes. I've been doing that for awhile now, for nine years (just as long as I've been singing). I remember the first time I hopped on a motorcycle. The first thing my dad said was, "Don't touch the throttle." So the first thing I did was [touch the throttle and] crash right into our garage. I put a big hole right into it.

How did you start singing?
When I was 6 years old, I was in a rock band that was horrible called "Dead End." The name kind of described us. People liked us; we would go and perform at coffee houses and stuff. I was always off-key, and the band was always off-key. They would always mess up--drop their guitars right onstage. I would be head-banging. I had long hair. It was fun, though, I enjoyed it.

What's your favorite thing about being famous?
My favorite thing about being famous...it's not really as big of a deal as everybody says it is. Being on the road is tough, doing interviews, and all the stuff. It's still pretty tough. I mean, going to radio stations, getting up early in the morning, and not only that but you've got to make time for school and for performances. When you finally get free time, it's like "Wow."

What's your least favorite thing about being famous?
My least favorite thing is probably being away from my family. They're always usually with me. This year they haven't really been, they've been at home. But, that's been sort of fun for me. I've had a good time.

What do you want to do when you get older?
When I turn about 18 or 19 I want to go to college for marine biology. I've been wanting to do that for awhile, since I was about 8 or 9. As soon as I watched the Free Willy movie I was like, "I gotta do this." It's cool, you know, I want to be part of the ocean helping people out. That's why it kind of upsets me when I see people throwing stuff in the ocean. Because when you think about it the ocean's been here longer than us, so why do we have to treat it bad?

Do you have any pets?
I have 24 pets. I have 1 turtle, 9 dogs, 5 cats, 6 birds, and 4 iguanas.

Do you have a girlfriend?
I am single. I am a very single man. (Yes!) After Hilary Duff [from Lizzie McGuire]. I was with her for about a year. I got away from that relationship, but we're still friends.

Do you get along with your brother Nick?
Yeah, I get along with Nick very well. He's very competitive with me, though. Everything I do he thinks he can do it better. Like motorcycles, he's never ridden one in his life until about a month and a half ago. I was showing him this trick: what I do is I go off a jump, about a 7-foot jump, and I do a 360-twist tail-grab. And he thinks he can do it. That's a really hard, hard trick. (I created it myself.) It's really hard because you have to hold onto the handlebars, let go in the middle of the air, do a full twist, grab onto the tail before you fall off, then pull yourself back on. So he thinks he can do it. He gets on the bike; he doesn't even know how to use the clutch. He gets on it, pops the clutch, then falls backward, and the bikes go over. So I teach him, and he goes off the jump, and he tried to do it. He did the twist but he just didn't grab on and he fell and landed on his stomach. That was the funniest thing I've ever seen in my life.

"Close Call" Aaron Carter feared for parents' lives on 9-11

Aaron Carter is making a concert swing through Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York this week, on a tour schedule pretty much the same as he had last year at this time - a time that the 14-year-old pop music prince, like countless others, will never forget.

"I witnessed it. The plane flew over my head. I saw it fly into the World Trade Center," says Carter, who was in a limousine with his tour manager, heading to Newark airport the morning of Sept. 11. His parents were leaving on a flight ahead of his. The limo had engine trouble, and the driver had pulled over on the New Jersey Turnpike. As the young man saw the conflagration in the distance, he feared it was his parents' plane.

"It was so terrifying. I'm trying to call them, and the phone's shut off. There's no clue what's going on. And we're freaking out, you know?" he recalls. "We sat in the limo and watched the buildings collapse." About an hour and a half later, he finally learned his mother and father were OK.

Since then, Carter's made a point of not letting post-9-11 fears inhibit him, and he was part of the "A Capitol Fourth" Independence Day show on the lawn of the Capitol last July before an audience of hundreds of thousands.

"Yeah, I was a little nervous. Knowing that this could possibly be one of the biggest terrorist targets in the world? It couldn't not frighten me," admits Aaron. "But when I got down to it, I felt everything was going to be fine, and I went out and had a good time."

THIS IS A TRUE STORY & We are all glad AC's parents are O.K.!!!
