Nick leaned his banging head on the cool wall. There was a thud and he drew back sharply. Brian smiled at him.
"They're still arguing." He said it quietly knowing that Nick's head was killing him. Kevin turned to him.
"You should get some sleep man." He told him. "You look awful." Nick smiled weakly.
"Thanks a lot." He replied sitting down on the sofa next to Brian. There was another thud in the next room and then the sound of something shattering. The sound of an almost hysterical female voice made them all turn to the room and listen more carefully.
"I hate you AJ McLean." The girls voice sounded calmer now and they would have almost believed her if she hadn't of been crying. "What gives you the right to think that you can run my life? What gives you the fucking right?" All the boys in the next room looked shocked. She rarely swore now. In fact she rarely spoke to anyone other than Nick. The fact that they were so close was the reason that he looked so pained at hearing her crying. He had tried to go in and stop them fighting more than once but Kevin and Brian had stopped him saying that it wasn't a good idea for him to interfere.
"You'd think they were dating, wouldn't you?" Kevin commented looking out of the window at the surging crowd of fans standing in the rain just to catch a glimpse of their heroes. Unfortunately they couldn't have picked a worse day as none of the group were feeling very sociable. Brian and Kevin were worried about Nick who'd been suffering from headaches for the last few weeks although he refused to visit a doctor even when they had threatened to tell his mother that he was ill. They hadn't done so yet, however as they couldn't afford to loose him whilst they were putting the finishing touches to their fourth album. They just wished that he would sleep more. Three of the group thought that he was pining for his ex-girlfriend whom he had broken up with just before Christmas but Brian knew the truth. He was sworn to secrecy on the matter and unable to say anything to the other boys other than it would hopefully work itself out of his system.
The hysterical screaming was continuing although none of the boys could now tell what she was saying.
"She must be really mad at him this time." Nick commented. "Her accent's come back. I haven't heard her talk like that for ages." The other three guys in the room nodded their agreement. The room fell silent, other than the sound of the woman's voice yelling and in turn a male voice replying just as loudly, as they thought about the first time they had met Elise. She'd only been a little girl, especially in Kevin's eyes as he was twenty at the time. She was a year younger than Nick who hated her at first sight(or at least pretended he did). The way she knew AJ was complex. Her parents who were English owned a large and very famous chain of hotels and they had bought a summer house in Florida for their daughter to stay in when she was not at school. The house that they bought was next door to AJ's childhood home and they had grown up playing with each other. She was like the younger sister he never had. Although he only ever saw her in the summer they were very close and 15 year old AJ was very excited to introduce her to the rest of the group who all fell in love with her instantly. All that is except Nick who took exception to having someone younger than himself around to get all the fuss that he had become accustomed to. He soon got used to her being there and even enjoyed her company when they travelled Europe and she was allowed to accompany them. Her mother was a great believer in travel and since AJs mother always travelled with the group as did one of Nick's parents until his 18 birthday she had taken her daughter out of school and allowed her to travel with the boys, sharing Nick and AJ's tutor. During the last year she had become a model, modelling underwear for Calvin Klein, hair products for L'Oreal, skin products for Neutrogena and all manner of different things. She had also presented TRL on MTV. She owned recording studios all over the world including the ones that the Backstreet Boys used most often in New York, Orlando and London. The boys had all been extremely excited for her and had tried to persuade her to feature in one of their videos, although they were still trying. AJ, however, wasn't quite so impressed. He didn't like the fact that she now had other places to be than touring with him, her own career and boys chasing her none stop. He didn't like the fact that guys could hang a picture of her wearing nothing but underwear on their bedroom wall and the fact that she had been on billboards across America including the Jumbotron in Time Square. AJ had hated every boyfriend she had had in the past and had been the reason that she had broken up with many of them. It wasn't that he wanted to date her himself, he just didn't want her dating anyone else because then she might be busy when he wanted her for something, which he hated. This was the point that she was making now. AJ yelled something back at her which she obviously didn't like.
"Get out." She screamed. "Get out of my fucking hotel room you arsehole. I hate you so much. I hope I never see you again." There was a sound of a door slamming and AJ came crashing noisily into the room where his four band mates where sitting. Cursing loudly about that "Psycho bitch" he proceeded to wander round the room making as much noise as he possibly could. The boys shushed him as quietly as they could.
"Man will you just shut up and stop being so selfish." Kevin growled angry that AJ hadn't noticed that Nick had finally fallen asleep. Nick stirred and everyone fell silent. "He's busting a gut so that we can get this album finished and you can't even be quiet while the kid gets some sleep." AJ seemed surprised at the angry glares that he was getting from the three band members who were looking at him. He looked at Nick who was lying on the couch, Brian was sitting on the floor near his feet and Nick was covered with all the coats and jumpers that they could find to throw over him. He still looked deathly pale and his sleep was restless but they were just glad that he was resting.
"Dumb kid shouldn't have gotten so ill in the first place." AJ muttered under his breath.
Unfortunately for him both Brian and Kevin heard what he said. Kevin strode across the room his long legs getting him to where AJ was standing in a matter of seconds. Brian got there before him, eager to defend his best friend, as well as angry about what AJ had just said. He was almost shaking with rage.
"What did you just say?" He asked trying to whisper but his voice coming out as a strangled hiss. AJ looked away, not wanting to repeat what he had just said about Nick when faced with an angry team of Kevin and Brian. "Don't turn away from me when I'm talking to you." AJ turned back surprised at just how angry Brian was with him. "Who was it who did a disappearing act in the middle of the night and had all four of us searching for him in the pouring rain. Who was it who decided to tell his mom that he'd broken up with Kelli when he asked us all to keep it quiet until she'd moved out? Who was it who insisted he go over his verses four times when his voice was already strained? And who was it who..."
"I think that's enough Brian." Kevin said as the door swung open and Leigh-Anne walked in. She looked at the group stood at one side of the room and then walked away from them towards the couch. She knelt down beside Nick and placed her hand gently on his head. They watched her quietly for a few minutes and then Brian turned back to AJ.
"Was it me?" He asked quietly his voice sounding dangerous. AJ took it as a rhetorical question and didn't answer. "Well? I'm waiting. Don't just ignore me." Brian pushed him and Kevin put a hand on his shoulder to calm him down. The door swung open.
"Making friends AJ?" A quiet voice asked. They all turned round including Leigh-Anne although they all knew who it was. "Just can't seem to keep your opinions to yourself today can you? What's he done?" She looked at Brian who just shook his head. He didn't want to tell her that they had been arguing about Nick and she especially didn't want her to know that it was AJ who had decided to tell Nick's mother that he had broken up with Kelli. Elise knew of course, that somebody had told her, she had made excuses for Nick to his mother so that she wouldn't find out about Kelli until Nick was ready to tell her. When Jayne had found out she had rung Elise mad at her for lying to her. She had calmed down when both Nick and Elise had told her their reasons. Nick knew that it was AJ but Elise didn't as the boys thought that telling her would be the last nail in the coffin of her and AJ's friendship. The they would be in trouble. Things just didn't seem to function properly when she wasn't there. They squabbled, lost track of where they were supposed to be and even what day it was. It was chaos when she went for a photo shoot that only lasted a few days so they hated to even imagine what it would be like if she left altogether. AJ glared at her but she turned away from him and left him to face Brian who she had a feeling hadn't finished with him yet. She saw Nick out of the corner of her eye and walked over to the couch where he was sleeping. She looked at him with a worried expression.
"Is he going to be okay to travel?" She asked Leigh-Anne.
"If he sleeps for a few hours now he should be okay when its time to go. That'll mean somebody'll have to pack his things up." Leigh-Anne replied looking at Brian.
"I'll do it." Elise said. "I've finished packing my stuff and you won't have time to do yours and his. His room's in such a mess." Leigh-Anne smiled and thanked her. AJ looked as if he was about to demand that she help him pack and let Nick sort out his own mess but the look that she shot him when he opened his mouth to speak silenced him so no-one knew exactly what he was going to say. "Do you know where his key is?" She asked Brian who had reluctantly moved away from AJ at Leigh-Anne's request. Brian shook his head.
"Maybe in his jacket pocket." He guessed. Elise found Nick's jacket carefully plucking it from the ones piled on top of him to keep him warm. She pulled out 3 sets of keys and dropped them on the floor. Brian came over to help her sort them out.
"Those are his house keys and those are his car so this must be his room key." Brian told her handing her the small silver key. "I've told him a million times to put key rings on the others so that they don't get confused with them but he looses his keys so often I don't think he can be bothered." Elise smiled at him knowing that he was remembering all the times the whole group had had to search for Nick's lost keys just to make sure that a fan hadn't gotten hold of them.
"I'm going to go and start sorting out his stuff." She said her gaze softening as she looked at Nick sleeping peacefully on the couch. She looked at Leigh-Anne and opened her mouth to speak.
"Get out of here will you." Leigh-Anne said pretending to be exasperated. "I can keep an eye on sleeping beauty here and make sure that these guys don't wake him up." She ushered Elise out of the room and then went back to her post next to the sofa to watch over Nick. Brian sat down next to her and they talked quietly for a while. AJ was staring sullenly at the wall and Kevin was looking distractedly out of the window, Howie was as usual on his phone but talking very quietly. Kevin suddenly looked at AJ.
"Where's she gonna stay?" He asked. Everyone looked confused. "She was supposed to be staying with you when we get back to Orlando while her house gets finished but she's not gonna want to now is she?" AJ just shrugged in response. "I mean I know that whatever you two were arguing about will just blow over but I don't think it's gonna be sorted by the time we land is it?" Again AJ just shrugged.
"She could stay with us." Leigh-Anne suggested.
"Who can?" Nick asked sleepily sitting up and lying down again when Leigh-Anne pushed him back gently.
"Hey, sweetie." She greeted him. She had gotten very close to Nick over the past two and a half years that she had known him. He was like a younger brother to her and she couldn't help but like him right from day one. "I didn't know you were awake. You should go back to sleep."
"I have to pack" Nick reminded her, his voice cracking under the strain of just saying a few words.
"Don't worry about that Elise's doing it for you, you just get some rest." Leigh-Anne pushed him back down again gently as he tried to sit up.
"My head's killing me." Nick told her.
"Surprise. surprise." AJ commented quietly from his corner. Nick looked at him and frowned.
"Sorry man but I can't help it." Nick started coughing again and AJ looked suddenly guilty.
"Nah, I'm sorry man, I'm just pissed at the moment but I shouldn't take it out on you. Especially not when I have a favour to ask." Everyone in the room including Nick looked at AJ in surprise. Nick and AJ had hardly been talking to each other until recently and now he wanted a favour from him. Nick sat up slightly, leaning back on his elbows. "Elise doesn't have a place to stay coz her house isn't done yet so there isn't enough security and she's not gonna wanna stay with me like she was meant to and you'll be able to stop her getting into any trouble coz she listens to you, so I thought..."
"You want me to baby-sit her?" Nick asked. His voice sounded almost mocking. "She's not gonna like that Bone."
"I know," AJ agreed with him "but at least she'll have somewhere to stay." Nick nodded his agreement.
"I'll see what she says. She might not want to stay with me." He reminded AJ.
"It's not such a bad idea really." Kevin commented from the window. "We're gonna have to tell your mom that you're ill and she's gonna wanna know that there's someone looking after you."
"Yeah, but Elise? My mom's still mad at her for not telling her about Kelli and for lying to her." Nick told him ignoring Leigh-Anne's gentle shushing noises.
"She'll be over it by now." Howie said. They all looked at him. He hadn't entered into this discussion so far and all the guys respected his judgement. "Anyway like Kevin said you're gonna need someone there in case you pass out again." Howie lowered his voice as he said the last three words . All the boys and Leigh-Anne silently nodded their agreement with him. "Your mom's less likely to wanna come back to Florida and fuss around you if you have someone she trusts staying with you."
"Yeah, but does she trust Elise again?" Nick sounded suddenly tired and lay down again.
"She knows thatshe was just lying to protect you." Howie reasoned ." So, I don't see why she wouldn't trust her to keep an eye on you." Nick looked at Brian who had been quiet for the last few minutes. Leigh-Anne knew that it was because he was worried about Nick and had been planning to get him to stay with them. This, however seemed like a better solution as it would mean that someone could look after Nick and Brian could spend some well needed quality time with his new bride aswell as being close to where Nick was.
"I think you should wait and see what she wants to do." Brian said looking directly at Nick. "I know she has some stuff to do in Orlando so she won't want to go too far away but for all we know she could have rented an apartment while we've been sat here talking about her." Nick nodded and stood up throwing off all the coats and sweaters that covered him.
"I'm gonna go and see how she's getting on with packing my things." He said and walked out of the room before anyone could even try to stop him.
