Brian woke to find himself alone in the bed. He noticed the bathroom door was slightly ajar and as he reached it he heard the sound of Nick retching into the toilet bowl. 'Shit' he thought, rushing into the bathroom. Nick had finished vomiting and was sitting with his back against the tiled wall, leaning his head on his knees.
"You ok?" Brian crouched down next to him and lifted his head up by his chin so that he was looking him in the face. Nick nodded. "Now are you going to let me take you to a doctor? 3 days in a row Nick, there has to be a reason."
"I don't want to go." Nick replied, sounding choked, his eyes were already watering due to his being sick minutes earlier.
"Nick, it's important."
"Yeah but if I go then all they're gonna do is tell me what you and me both already know and I'm just not ready to deal with it."
"Nick. This is serious."
"I know, I'm not a child, Brian."
"You're going to have to deal with it sooner or later though and the sooner the better. You're not in this on your own anyway, we'll all be behind you. Do you have any idea who the father is, I mean, I know it's not that simple but can you remember any of us being careless in the last couple of weeks?" Brian asked. Nick nodded and Brian watched a tear roll down his cheek. "Nicky, don't cry. C'mon, let's get out of here." He helped Nick up and lay him down on the bed with his cheek resting on Brian's shoulder.
"I didn't mean it to happen, I mean, I wasn't exactly sure that it could." Nick said, rubbing his eyes, to get rid of the tears that were threatening to fall.
"We've had an idea for a long time though haven't we, all of us." When Nick was about 14 he had started to have severe back pains and stomach cramps. They had been in Germany at the time and by the time they had convinced their management that Nick needed a doctor after being in agony for about a week the pain had begun to subside. The doctor had told them that the symptoms they had described were typical of those of men who went on to be able to carry children in later life. This was something that had been thought impossible but a gene mutation caused by the increase in pollution meant that more men were being born with the ability to produce offspring without the aid of a woman. Throughout the years this had become more and more common and was now, although still rare, widely accepted as normal as homosexuality had become less of a taboo. There was still no way of knowing for certain if a man was able to carry a baby until he actually became pregnant as the only signs were those that Nick displayed at a young age. "And it's not just your responsibility. I know it's not my baby because we're always so careful, unless the condom split."
"It's not yours." Nick replied flatly.
"Whose is it then?" Brian asked."Whose is it, Nicky?" Brian asked again hoping against hope that Nick's response was going to be AJ.
"Kevin's." Nick said, rubbing his eyes again.
"Stop that, Nick, you're going to hurt yourself." Brian pulled his hands away from his face and the tears started to roll down Nick's face without his hands there to wipe them away. Brian's hand came down and wiped them away instead. He tilted Nick's face so that Nick was looking up at him.
"C'mon, Nicky. It's gonna be ok. He'll be ok about it." Brian soothed.
"We both know that that's not true." Nick sighed.
"It's his responsibility too, Nick."
"He won't see it that way. God, I wish I'd stopped him when I realised."
"When was it?"
"About a fortnight ago. God! I'm so stupid!"
"No, Nick, you're not." Brian argued.
"But I knew what could happen and I realised we weren't using protection and I should have stopped him."
"You were just unlucky to get caught."
"Yeah, unlucky, but being unlucky's completely screwed up my life. What're the fans going to say when they find out? It's not like I can hide something like this from them, they find everything out. They only don't know I'm bi because we keep it between us guys." Nick sighed.
"They'll be ok with it, Nick. They'll probably think it's cute when they find out it's Kev's. And like you just said, you're bi, not gay so it's not like they'll think they completely haven't got a chance with you. Ok, so maybe those in the bible belt will be upset about it but even people in those areas are much more accepting of it."
"You're shitting me right? There's no way Kev's going to admit to the world that he knocked me up. He can barely admit to himself that he's anything less than straight."
"You're going to have to tell him though. You have to at least give him that chance." Brian reminded Nick.
"I know" Nick agreed, but still not sounding happy about it.
"Look, I'll book an appointment for you at the doctors, we've got the whole afternoon off. You don't want to tell Kevin before it's been confirmed."
"It's just postponing the inevitable though isn't it?" Nick sighed.
"I guess."
