Carved: The Slit-Mouthed Woman

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Horror NR. Legend holds that 30 years ago, a suburban town was terrorized by the spirit of a woman whose beautiful face had been grotesquely disfigured by a jealous husband. Roaming the streets wearing a long coat and surgical mask, the spirit would approach her young victims and, while removing the mask, ask if she was pretty. The victim’s response would almost always lead to their violent death. Now, one by one, children are disappearing again. As teachers and officials desperately begin to investigate, a panic begins to build as the woman’s spirit returns for some unfinished business and the town's dark secrets are exposed. Carved is an good example of why I love Asian horror and cinema in general,Their films are much deeper than a similar film made in Hollywood. Carved shows us this woman with a slit mouth a rain coat and big scissors grabbing kids and asking "am I pretty" before slicing them. But as we move along in the film and begin to learn more about this woman there's still that supernatural mystery as to why she is doing this all.A similar film made in Hollywood lets the viewer know right away which really takes away from the film's suspense. In the end we do find out why she is killing but not before some really great suspense and some nice scares as well as a few twists tossed in. There's not much in the way of gore here but it's not needed to make a successful horror film when you have the right atmosphere and cinematography which Carved does. Simply put Carved is a chilling horror film with enough suspense for two movies...own it today. Released by Tartan Video. **** Out Of *****
