A star-studded cast including Kirstie Alley, Rebecca De Mornay, Peter Ustinov, Shirley MacLaine and Alan Bates headlines this engrossing dramatization of what led to the infamous 1692 witch trials in Salem, Mass. The film recounts the sobering tale of how 19 innocent lives were taken in a community experiencing paranoid hysteria regarding the suspected but unproved presence of the occult in the small New England town. Salem Witch Trails was a two-part CBS Mini-Series back in 2002, this week it's long awaited arrival to DVD is here. Even with a long run time, at a little over three hours, the film is still highly entertaining. This isn't based on Arthur Miller's play "The Crucible" but a straightforward retelling of events leading up to the 1692 trials. Screenwriter Maria Nation consulted historical texts and made suppositions when facts were missing. So it was nice to see a more realistic portrayal of the events surrounding one of the darkest periods in American history. The cast is terrific, each actor holds their own and the accents were spot-on. The cast includes,Alan Bates,Rebecca De Mornay,Shirley MacLaine and Kirstie Alley to name only a few. The settings and costumes were amazing as well. This is one of the better made-for-tv movies you will see, its a edge of your seat tale that contains some historical truth as well. I highly recommend picking this title up not only for its amazing story but its exceptional cast as well. Released by Echo Bridge Home Entertainment. **** 1/2 Out Of *****
