PROJECT TITLE: Childhood environment and cyberporn: Implications for families and the emotional health of viewers. WARNING: SOME ITEMS IN THIS QUESTIONNAIRE ARE OF A SENSITIVE NATURE AND MAY BE DISTRESSING TO SOME PEOPLE.

This project is being undertaken by Amanda Lamy as a requirement of the B.A (Hons) degree at the University of New England. The project concerns the relationship between cyberporn use and implications for families and individuals. In this context “cyberporn” is taken in a very broad sense to include any pornographic material available on the internet. This project aims to examine links between cyberporn use, childhood abuse, family functioning, and the emotional well being of cyberporn viewers. Few psychologists have investigated the nature of this relationship. Your participation in this survey therefore would be much valued whether or not you view cyberporn. You are free to decline to take part in the study or to withdraw from it at any time. You must be 18 years of age or older to participate. The attached survey form comprises five separate questionnaires. The first questionnaire simply asks for background characteristics. The second questionnaire addresses cyberporn use. The third questionnaire concerns your family, the fourth addresses emotional well being, while the fifth questionnaire concerns your childhood. You answers to each of these questionnaires will remain completely anonymous, so please respond to them as frankly as you can. In each questionnaire spend only a little time on each item, responding as spontaneously and openly as you can. The set of survey forms should take around 45 minutes to complete. All information disclosed will be fully protected. Your data will be combined with those from other participants, and only the overall statistical trends will be disseminated. Responses to the completed questionnaires will be electronically transferred using a file transfer protocol client and imported into a database. The electronic records will be securely stored for five years, after which they will be destroyed. After you have agreed to participate, please print this page for your possible future reference, and then complete each questionnaire in turn. Your submission of the completed questionnaires will be taken to signify you informed consent to participate in the project. Thank you very much for you participation in this project. If you have any questions about the project, or if the questionnaires bring up any personal issues you feel you need to share with another person, you are welcome to contact Amanda Lamy at a.lamy@tsn.cc or Dr. I. Price at the School of Psychology at iprice@metz.une.edu.au. Ongoing counselling support is also available at your local Community Health Centre; consult your regional telephone directory. It is hoped the data will be analysed by 31st December, 2003. If you would like general information about the outcome of the project, please contact Amanda Lamy after this date.
