Introduction

Everyone knows Google, the famous search engine, and everybody uses it regularly, but how many of us know how to use it the most effective way? This is actually the key question around which the whole activity revolves.

Many people believe that using Google is a piece of cake! Absolutely not, using Google needs mastery of some search techniques and this requires learning and rigorous practice because the syntax of most search queries needs to be learned by heart. Google is known for its ability to precisely retrieve what you are looking for provided that you are looking for what you are looking for the right way.

Let’s make it clear, this is not hacking yet, but it is a sort of initiation to the web search basic tools necessary for every scholar to know to obtain the best out of Google. This will allow the students to narrow their search span to save time and effort, and this is the beginning of a professional efficient Google search.

What’s more, this presentation tries to justify the importance of using critical thinking skills to deal with Google findings. Critical thinking has become a central skill in learning especially nowadays. Google doesn’t perfectly filter the results for you and you have to develop the skills necessary to prevent Google from displaying inappropriate content. This is not enough because evaluating the results of any search process is unavoidable for every scholar; hence the critical learning competence indispensability.

The bottom line is to carry out a long term project for the students to get them accustomed and ready to get acquainted with serious academic web search methods and how to do it perfectly well.

The teacher opened the presentation by brainstorming on the origin of the word “Google”. After a long unsuccessful layering of the onion, the students were informed that the search engine Google is named after the “Googol” which is a cardinal number represented as “1” followed by 100 zeros or 10100 [ten raised to the power of a hundred]. This shows that Google can supply a Googol results to your search terms.

It goes without saying that Google is needed for academic research. All the students are conscious of the importance of Google in their school life but the problem is that most of them do not know how to get the best of it. The presentation is designed essentially to show them in brief some tips and tricks in addition to the most appropriate special features to help them find exactly what they're looking for. It is not meant to cover everything about Google but to refer to the ABCs only.

The teacher started with a before tackling the search step which consists essentially of tuning the browser to serve the student better like choosing the interface language, the search language, the number of results per page and most importantly the safe search. Many users of Google don't know that this engine uses the SafeSearch filters to allow you to modify your browser settings so that inappropriate or objectionable content does not appear in search results. The teacher also indicates that Google suggests advanced search, preferences and the language tools to make it practical for its users to easily get what they search for.

Moreover, the teacher points out that Google popularity is due to innovation and regular revisions and improvements. It really makes life easier for businessmen, scholars and the large public until it becomes the most recommended of all search engines. Google offers a multitude of services and is continuously working for the development of users and developers by providing them with great tools and products. Some of the services Google offers are, ORKUT, Google maps, Google earth, Google news, Google images, Google alerts, Google books, Google translate, Google Talk, gmail, and so on. There is much more to say about Google; however, this activity is not meant to talk about Google but rather about ways to optimize and improve the students’ quality Google search.
