Who is Evanescence? 16.04.03

Rock newcomers Evanescence are set to invade Oz with the release of the US smash hit "Bring Me To Life". The track was heavily featured in the 'Daredevil" film soundtrack and features guest vocals by Paul McCoy of 12 Stones.

Evanescence is Amy Lee (vocal) Ben Moody (lead guitar) John LeCompt (guitar) and Rocky Gray (drums). Hailing from Little Rock Arkansas, their ethereal brand of rock has taken the US by storm where their single "Bring Me To Life" topped the Billboard rock singles chart and their debut album "Fallen" notches up its fourth week in the Billboard Top Ten. "We're definitely a rock band," explains 20-year-old front woman Lee. "But the twist is that the band's music is epic, dramatic, dark rock."

Recorded in Los Angeles, "Fallen" was produced by Dave Fortman (BOYSETSFIRE, Superjoint Ritual) and is due to hit Australian stores next month. The first single off the CD "Bring Me To Life," was part of the Daredevil film soundtrack and features guest vocals from Paul McCoy of 12 Stones. "'Bring Me To Life' is about discovering something or someone that awakens a feeling inside them that they've never had before," says lead guitarist, Moody of their new single. "You discover there is a world that is bigger than just your safe bubble."

Evanescence's single "Bring Me To Life" will be available in stores from April 21. The album "Fallen" will follow shortly after on May 12.

Evanescence Bond Over Meat Loaf 23.04.03

Evanescence guitarist and songwriter Ben Moody teamed up with lead singer Amy Lee a few years ago after hearing her rendition of Meat Loaf's I'd Do Anything For love" at a youth camp. The musical duo has been inseparable ever since.

Evanescence co-founders Amy Lee (vocals) and Ben Moody (guitarist/songwriter) attribute most of their newfound success to the band's creative chemistry. The two who met while in their early teens established the band in the late 90s and began releasing EPs of their music, which was strongly influenced by a wide range of artists including Bjork and Tori Amos.

"We were at a youth camp," Moody recalls of their first meeting. "During some sort of recreational period held in a gymnasium, I heard Amy playing Meat Loaf's 'I'd Do Anything for Love' at the piano. So I went over to meet her, and she started singing for me. I was pretty much blown away, so I suckered her into joining a band with me. Since that day, the musical relationship has remained dependably loyal. We have the same exact vision regarding what we love about music. When it comes to song writing, we finish each other's thoughts."

In their early days the band began to establish a reputation by independently releasing material. Even without the benefit of live performances, they managed to get the public's attention. "A lot of it developed by being elusive," Moody remembers. "The second song we ever wrote was this seven-minute, ridiculous Goth anthem called "Understanding" and for some reason, the local rock station decided to play it a lot. We gained this popularity around town, even though no one knew who we were or where to find us. It was because we could never afford to play a show. It was just Amy and I and we couldn't pay any musicians."

Things are a little different these days with the band's latest single "Bring Me To Life" topping rock charts in the US and featuring on the soundtrack to the movie blockbuster, "Daredevil". Available in Australian stores now, it's the first track off their forthcoming album "Fallen" due in stores on May 12.

Evanescence Rock Aussie Charts 30.04.03

The awesome debut single from heavy rockers Evanescence enters the ARIA singles chart at #12. The track, off the band's forthcoming album "Fallen" also topped ARIA's Hard Rock and Metal chart this week. Hard rock newcomers Evanescence power into the ARIA singles chart with their first single "Bring Me To Life" debuting at #12 this week. The track, which also came in at #1 on the ARIA Heavy Rock and Metal Chart is off their forthcoming new album "Fallen" due in stores next month.

The single recently topped US rock charts, features the guest vocals of 12 Stones singer Paul McCoy. "'Bring Me To Life' is about discovering something or someone that awakens a feeling inside them that they've never had before," explains lead guitarist Ben Moody. "You discover there is a world that is bigger than just your safe bubble. It's the song that is the most 'us'. That best sums up what we strive to sound like."

Singer Amy Lee's spin on the song is very similar. "Basically, we go through life everyday, kind of doing the same thing, going through the motions, and nothing phases us for the most part," she explains. "Then one day something happens that wakes you up and makes you realise that there's this whole world of emotion or meaning that you've never seen before. It's like, 'wow, I've been asleep all this time'."

Available now, "Bring Me To Life" is off the album "Fallen" which will be in stores on May 12.

Evanescence Liven Up The Charts 07.05.03

Singer Amy Lee describes the fundamental message behind the tracks on the new Evanescence album "Fallen" as a positive one. Their single "Bring Me To Life" also took a positive step toward the top spot on the ARIA chart this week.

Rock newcomers Evanescence continue to climb the national ARIA charts with their new single "Bring Me To Life" jumping five spots to #7. The track is the first release off their upcoming CD, "Fallen", due in stores this month.

Critics are already raving about the album, which perfectly combines nu metals dark and moody melodies with the angelic vocals of front woman Amy Lee. The 20-year-old singer/songwriter has become somewhat of a hero and inspiration for female rock lovers, who see her as the lone woman in a male-dominated genre."It's exciting for me, but we definitely want to change that," she says. "Hopefully this will open the door for a lot of other female artists".

Lyrically, Evanescence explores dark, introspective themes of love and despair. But the group insists its fundamental message is a positive one. "The point of this whole record and band is to let people know that they're not alone in dealing with bad feelings or pain or anything that they go through," says Lee, who pens most of the words. "That's life and that's human. They're not alone, and we're going through it, too."

Evanescence's album "Fallen" featuring the Top 10 smash "Bring Me To Life" will be available in stores on May 12.

Evanescence Defy Critics 09.05.03

US radio stations took a while to catch on to the talents of Evanescence who were blinded by the fact that they had a female vocalist. The band's persistence payed off and now they have a worldwide hit on their hands with "Bring Me To Life".

Despite the fact that it only took two months for "Fallen" to go Platinum in the US, rock newcomers Evanescence faced some serious hurdles when they first approached radio to play their music.

"No one really seemed to care about how many people were in the band, just the fact that one of them was a woman," explains guitarist and songwriter Moody. "There were a lot of radio programmers that took a while to come around and realise people are calling, wanting the song, and you have to play it. A lot of people were like, 'Yeah, a chick, no place for her.' It seems those people ate their words, with the album currently riding high at #7 on the Billboard charts and the single "Bring Me To Life" in the top ten. Australian audiences, on the other hand, embraced the band instantly debuting their single at #12 last week. Now at #7, the track is all over the airwaves and looks set to continue climbing the ARIA charts.

In the meantime, Evanescence has signed up to play a number of international festivals and headlining gigs. The band is concentrating on honing its live show, which includes touring member's drummer Rocky Gray, guitarist John LeCompt, and bassist Will Boyd.

"We do about an hour," explains Moody. "Nothing we're playing right now is newer than "Fallen". We're just sort of revamping those songs. They just kind of grow and evolve as we play them live, day after day. Live is much heavier. It is the record turned up to 11, basically."

"Fallen" featuring the smash hit single "Bring Me To Life" will be available in stores on May 12. Stay tuned for news on a possible visit to Australia later this year.

Evanescence D.I.Y. 11.06.03

Watch out for the funky looking clothes worn by Evanescence lead singer Amy Lee in the clip for the band's next single "Going Under". The vocalist, who was inspired by the lack of readily available attire, designed the outfits herself.

Evanescence lead singer Amy Lee has designed two outfits for her part in the band's next video "Going Under". Director Philip Stolzl who also masterminded the video for their chart-topping smash, "Bring Me To Life", filmed the clip a few weeks ago in Berlin. The ideas for her costumes came to Lee while she spent a few days in a hotel bed sick recently. Lee came up with two designs - one of which she stitched together herself.

"It's white and has lots of shreds," she said of the hand made garment. "It reminds me of something someone who did would wear. It's a long dress ripped up. Different shreds of different fabric just flying around. The other outfit is a corset. I worked with a designer on that one. I designed it and he took it from there." Lee claims her decision to try her hand at clothes design stems from the lack of items in stores that matched the ideas in her head - a mixture of rock and fantasy.

"I wear lots of funky stuff on stage, I like to mix it up," she says. "I like to use tow basic elements for my clothing - rock, you know, metal chains and stuff - mixed with fairies, drama and Victorian clothing - fantasy."

Evanescence's chart topping Platinum single "Bring Me To Life" and Top Ten Gold album "Fallen" are both available in stores now. The band will be in Australia for a promotional tour from July 19 -23.
