Wave Information
Information about waves foun in THE PERFECT STORM:
- Wave height- caused by speed, duration(how long wind blows), fetch(sea room, amount of open water).
- Breaking Waves- Waves that can have tremendous kinetic energy displacing huge amounts of water.
- Inevitably shipds encounter waves that exceed their stress rate. People in the Navy call them
- Pitchpoling- This is when a wave was taller than the ship was wide. The ship would try to climb the wave, but since it was to tall it would fall backwards.
- Longitudinal waves- Sound waves that move in the same direction.
- Stationary Waves- Waves made from two progressive waves going in opposite directions, they can be either longitudinal or transverse.
- Transverse Waves- Electromagnetic waves that move at right angles to the direction of the wave.
- Circular Waves- Waves that are being made by some source in their center, and spread through the medium in all direction as they spread the energy sreads out.
