Daily Devotional for June 23rd by http://www.upperroom.org/Devotional/

Read Matthew 13:3-9, 36-42

See to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God; that no root of bitterness springs up and causes trouble, and through it many become defiled.

-Hebrews 12:15 (NRSV)

WEEDING my small front garden is sometimes difficult and tedious. However, one evening, I found the soil dry and powdery, giving way quickly as I pulled each weed. Soon I had cleared the whole area of weeds. The condition of the soil made a big difference. When the soil is soft, the weeds can be pulled quickly and thrown away.

Sometimes we find something like weeds growing in our hearts. Someone says a hurtful word, and we say we will never forget the pain. A person we trust lies to us, and we decide not to trust anyone ever again.

However, when we spend time each day reading the scriptures and praying, our hearts become soft, like that soil in my garden. When problems arise, we can recognize them for what they are, and when bitterness tries to "take root," we can firmly but gently remove it from our hearts.

Mary Ellen Main (Oklahoma, U.S.A.)

Lord, please keep our hearts prepared to serve you. In Jesus' name. Amen.

A pure heart is like a garden with good soil.

Global Warming by Laura

This month, we will be talking about Global Warming. Everyone's heard of it, but how much do you really know about it, and how is it affecting your daily life? How will it affect you in the future and your children's future? Global Warming is causing the sea levels to rise. This is due to the melting of the polar ice caps. The rise in sea level, if it gets to a point, will cause low lying areas to flood. It will also cause species extinction. Polar bears and other polar species can not survive if their habit melts away. We need to make significant changes to keep this from getting out of control. What you can do is spend less time driving, spread the word about global warming, and keep some house plants. Plants take in carbon dioxide and turn it into oxygen. Every little bit helps. Be sure to do your part.

"Global warming is happening today. ExxonMobil hopes you don't notice."

Movie Review by Dawn

The Messengers starts off with a North Dakota family that is massacred by an invisible entity that will shiver your timbers and terrify you to the bones.

We then flash to the present day, in which the same dwelling is bought by the Solomon family. They are in search of a change and a place to get a peace of mind, which turns out to be the total opposite. There are very malicious ravens and many other ghostly apparitions which will chill you as you continue to be enticed to watch.

The Solomon's consist of 16 year old Jess, her 3 year old brother Ben and their parents. Jess keeps trying to inform her parents of what is going on but of course they do not believe her based on her past problems. A stranger armed with a gun decides to help them and rounds out the household.

During this hypnotic movie that keeps you watching even when you are challenging every sound you hear at home, you are hit with slamming doors, mysterious signs and shapes and fingernail scratches on the floors.

Is Jess and Ben losing their young precious minds or are they revealing the truth about the house's past? You will have to check out this movie if you love being challenged by possible spirits.

It stars: Dylan McDermott, Penelope Ann Miller, Evan/Theodore Turner, Kristen Stewart and John Corbett.

I personally give the movie 4 1/2 stars, because I love horror movies and being on the edge of my seat at every turn. You must check it out!

Health Article by Laura

This month's health article is about a condition known as Fibromyalgia. One of our Palace Members, Netta, has this condition so I wanted to write this article for her to get the word out about it. You or someone you know may someday have it also.

Here are some of the classic symptoms:

Widespread Pain: Pain in specific areas of the bodie caused by pressure, including the back of the head, neck, chest, hips, and knees. This pain can last for anywhere from a couple of days to months.

Fatigue: Fibromyalgia causes people to fill like they have not gotten enough sleep even after they've slept a full 8 hours. People with fibromyalgia often do not get to the deep stage of the sleep cycle. This is due to activities in their brains which are similar to activities that happen while you are awake.

IBS or Irritable Bowel Syndrome: This is a common side affect of fibromyalgia. It consists of constipation, diarrhea, or abdominal pain.

Other common side effects include:
Depression
Numbness or tingling sensations in the hands and feet (paresthesia)
Difficulty concentrating
Mood changes
Chest pain
Dry eyes, skin and mouth
Painful menstrual periods
Dizziness
Anxiety

Treatment:

Medication: such as pain relivers, anti-depressants, sleeping pills, and muscle relaxants.
Cognitive behavior therapy: therapy to help you deal with stressful situations.
Treatment Programs: programs set by a doctor to help ease pain, relaxation treatments, and biofeedback.

Everyone needs to understand that your health is a blessing so you need to take care of it as much as you can. It can be here today and gone the next because some things are beyond your control. You should appreciate what other people are going through and take the time to learn more about it so you can offer your support. You may want the same support for yourself someday.
