When examining the magical properties of the components of each characters's wand, you can often see their personality reflected in those properties. Read on.
Click here for a list of the magical properties of each type of wood.
Note: All components are not provided in the books for some wands. I'm listing what they have; that's all I can do. Sorry.
Harry Potter, Holly and pheonix feather, eleven inches, nice and supple.
Holly is the strongest of the protective woods. It is used to guard against evil.
(The perfect wand for our pint-sized hero. After all, who has to guard himself against evil more than he does?)
Lord Voldemort, Yew and pheonix feather, thirteen and a half inches. Yew is the wood of death.
(Enough said.)
James Potter, Mahogany, eleven inches, pilable. Mahogany is known for its ability to withstand lightning strikes. It has strong protective qualities.
(Hmmmm! Uncanny, being that his son was left with a lightning-bolt scar. Ollivander also commented that this wand is excellent for transfiguration.)
Lily Potter, Willow, ten and a quarter inches, long and swishy. Willow is favored for its general magical uses. It has strong protective qualities and is good for healing and love charms.
(Lily was great with charms (she saved Harry's life with one!), so this fits nicely. Ollivander commented that it is a nice wand for charm work.)
Reubeus Hagrid, Oak, sixteen inches, rather bendy. Oak is a potent magical wood. It adds potency to all charms, particularly health and money charms.
(I don't see any particular relevance with Hagrid and his wand wood. However, he doesn't do magic often. Perhaps we'll see some connection in upcoming books!)
Fleur Delacour, Rosewood and veela hair, nine and a half inches, inflexible. Rosewood has many magical qualities. It is used for divination and love charms.
(Rosewood has a feminine, enchanting sound to its name, which fits Fleur's personality. Being the tease that she is, I bet she wouldn't oppose to putting a love charm on a few certain guys, such as Bill Weasley. (But, hey, if it was Bill, I think I wouldn't mind putting one on him either. *cough* I mean...) Ollivander commented that veela hair makes a rather tempermental wand.)
Cedric Diggory, Ash and unicorn hair, twelve and a quarter inches, pleasantly springy. Ash is a healing wood. It is also used for protection. Snakes have an innate fear of the ash and avoid it.
(Hmmm... Well, Voldemort sure wasn't scared by that Ash wand, despite his snake-ishness. Poor Cedric... why do the handsome ones have to die...)
Viktor Krum, Hornbeam and dragon heartstring, ten and a quarter inches, thick and rigid. Hornbeam is a lucky wood. It brings good fortune to the Wizard. It is very good for spells.
(Well, Viktor does seem to be pretty lucky! He's a famous Quidditch player and things seem to be going well for him with Hermione.)
