Nived Lobo, writing from London

When I first came to London 4 years ago, I went to a co-educational school called Prospect House. It was a small but friendly school and environment. One of the features was that you brought your own lunch in a box. Fine. I wanted go to another school, so I tried for a prestigious school called King's College School to practice entrance exams. Strangely enough, I actually got in!

So, one fine sunny day I put on my shirt, tie, trousers and blazer, packed my bags and headed off for the big school. I was sent to class 1P, (Grade 3) and sat down. Though I was clearly overwhelmed by the monstrous size of the school, I seemed to like it. The only problem was, I had forgotten my lunch! So, I grabbed half my emergency money and made for the school phone. I dialled the home number, explaining to my mother that I had forgotten my lunch box. My mum laughed, and then told me that I had to eat school lunch. I put down the phone and walked past the School War Memorial, the Assembly rooms, the Sixth form Centre and into the hall. I lined up, and the got an orange tray. I glanced at the menu- curry and rice, or so it seemed. When it was my turn, the cook shoveled a white lump on my plate, which I gazed at in awe. First I poked it, then prodded it and it turned out to be rice, all stuck together! The, she spooned a dollop of barely recognizable brown liquid with chunks. On closer inspection, large blotches of oil were floating in it. So I rejected the plate, and had salad.

The next day, I lined up, picked up the orange tray and saw the menu-hash browns with fish. Cautiously I accepted the plate from the cook, moved the plate.... Crash! At the same time, the fish slid out of the plate, (I could see it slipped on the oil) and the hash brown thudded onto the floor. I picked it up, and a strange phenomenon appeared- a huge pool of oil surrounded the greasy hash brown. I rejected once more and opted for salad, and the food from home in a box.

The school was great, the food wasn't. In London, many schools have horrible greasy food, which may contribute to the fact that many people are fat here in London.
