Chapters Indigo Canada -
Chapters Inc. was formed following the merger of Coles and SmithBooks, then Canada's two largest bookstore chains. In 1994, Canadian General Capital and Pathfinder Capital purchased SmithBooks from Federal Industries, and later that year acquired Coles from Southam Inc. The strategy was to build a strong base company and use its financial strength to invest in the development of large format book superstores.
In April 1995, the merger of SmithBooks and Coles was finalized, and in November 1995, the new company,
Chapters Inc. opened its first two book superstores and from there grew to become the largest book retailer in Canada, operating bookstores in all provinces, under the names Chapters, Coles, SmithBooks, and World's Biggest Bookstore.

She is not only brilliant, she is sweet and polite and good-hearted. Unfortunately, Matilda has horrible parents who think she is a rotten kid, when they think about her at all. Her father is a crook, her mother is a twit, her brother is a bit dim, and none of them treat Matilda very well at all. But Matilda's magnificent brain allows her to devise delicious types of revenge, like crazy-gluing her father's hat to his bumpy head. When Matilda finally starts school, she is far too intelligent to be challenged by first grade work. Fortunately, she adores her teacher, Miss Honey, who recognizes Matilda's exceptional abilities and brings her geometry books to study while the other children practice their two-times tables. Enter the Trunchbull -- Miss Trunchbull, the terrifying headmistress who is gigantic, ugly and rotten to the core. Dahl is notorious for his grotesque adult characters, but Trunchbull takes the cake -- she picks up little girls by their pigtails and practices the hammer toss with them. She makes one boy eat chocolate cake until he is almost sick and calls all the children nasty names like "blister," "ignorant little slug," and "witless weed." Trunchbull doesn't believe that Matilda is a genius, but when she falsely accuses Matilda of a terrible prank, Matilda's abilities prove exceptional, indeed. This is a deftly-wrought story that is funny, sad and yet sweetly hopeful -- the ending brings a kind of disbelieving relief. Ages 7-11.
