One hippo is all alone, so he calls up two others, who come over ... followed by three hippos, then four more, and so on until there's a party of hippopotamic proportions in the living room! But when the party's over, the hippos depart in reverse order, a group of nine first (plus one unexplained beast guest), then eight, seven and so on until the first hippo is alone again and missing his 44 friends. The jaunty rhyming text sets up some great visual gags -- we especially like the nine hippo waitstaff who come to serve drinks and pass canapés and the seven hippos who depart the party headed west in a covered wagon. This is a truly fun and inventive book, now in sturdy board format. Ages 3 and up. Children can count to ten as all the hippos (and one beast) arrive on the scene, then count backwards to one as they all leave. This book makes a great read-aloud story, with wonderful illustrations of the hippos. I would definitely recommend this book for very young children.
