Yogi sends good vibrations

It's hard to miss the posters of smiling Indian woman that are appearing all over town next to ads for raves and club nights.

The woman in the poster is Yogi Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi, and she believes her photograph transmits her personal vibrations to all who see it.

The poster campaign was financed by local and international followers of SahajaYoga, the system of meditation founded by the Indian yogi.

Local yogi Edwin Hou said the red and gold posters are the most effective way of advertising the spiritual teacher’s visit to Hong Kong this weekend.

“We know that her photo is so strong with vibrations,” he said.” When people see the posters, they already know there is something special about her and they will come to the program.”

The Indian yogi, once a spiritual adviser to Gandhi, has visited over 70 countries in the past 25 years to spread her message of world peace through meditation.

”We seldom mention [her energy] to new comers, because it makes Sahaja Yoga sound mystical,” said Hou. “But actually it’s based on scientific research. “ Hou said researchers have proven that a photograph can carry a person's energy.

“When a picture is taken, there's a cosmic ray from the picture to the person that picks up vibrations and sends them back to the picture.”

Shri Mataji is paying her third visit to the Territory in as many years.

“She said China is fertile soil for spirituality,” said Hou. “That’s why she wants to put more attention into Hong Kong and China.”

Hou said the meditation practice reduces stress and improves physical heals.

“ I used to have severe spinal problems and I saw a chiropractor every day, but after doing Sahaja Yoga I don’t need to see her a anymore,” he said.

The practice has also been incorporated into many schools and factories in the former Soviet Union.

The speech on Saturday March 9, at 7:30 p.m. in Shatin Town Hall, is free, as are weekly meditation sessions offered by the local Sahaja Yoga group.

“In our mind every thing truly from the divine should not be exchanged for money,” said Hou. “Spirituality is not something sensational. It is very deep in the soul.”
