Sicilia
The Regional Wines
In the Odissey, Homer states that in Sicily,
the land of Cyclops, people had grapes that are not
sowed. Today there is no doubt that viticulture existed
already when the first Greek colonisers set foot on the
island.
Today vineyards in Sicily cover about 183,500 hectars
for its primary production and about 1,000 for its
secondary one. On the whole, every year 11,600,000
hectolitres of wine are produced, of which only 356,000
fall under the DOC category, most of which is taken up by
Marsala.
