Melissa was born on March 17th 1973, in Motreal, Canada. Before Melissa left Hole to play touring bassist for Smashing Pumpkins Melissa played bassist and backing vocals for Hole. She was with Hole for five years: 1994 - 1999. Melissa's nicknames include Missy and Molly. Her biggest musical influences are Blondie and The Smiths. Her father, Nick Auf De Maur is now deceased. Billy Corgan recommended Melissa to Courtney when she rang him trying to find a replacement for Kristen. He found Melissa and told Courtney that she was a 'hot babe and could really play'
