John was born in New York, he joined the band when he was 17 years old. In 1995 he released his first solo album called "Niandra Ladies and usually just a T-shirt" on producer Rick Rubin`s label American. In 1997 he released his second solo album "Smiles from the streets you hold", and then 2001's "To Record Only Water For Ten Days." Touring and fame caused him to quit before the Lollapalooza tour in 1992 (was replaced by Dave Navarro), spent a 6-year long hiatus and came back in 1998 to record 1999's "Californication."
