A Second Chance At Happiness

Chapter 1

“Life is wonderful.” Lacey Jones sipped on a cold bottle of beer as she spoke to her friend Shelley Arnold.

“Of course it is.” She giggled as she opened the ice chest full of beer. “Trent just got home. How long was he gone this time?”

“Six months.” She sighed. “Too long.” She watched across the yard as her husband played with their three-year-old son, Tristan.

“I’ll give you two weeks, then you’ll be ready for him to leave again.”

“Maybe.” She smiled.

“So how’s the beer business?” Carl White, Trent’s best friend and co-pilot, grabbed a beer and twisted the cap off.

“Not bad. The summer’s coming up, so I’ll be working a lot of concerts.” She flipped her long, brown hair over her shoulder.

“Anything we’d like to see?” He smiled.

“I’ll give Trent a list Monday.”

“Thanks Lace!” He held his beer up to her before taking a sip.

Trent carried a sleepy little boy into the house later that night. He put him to bed as Lacey listened to messages on the machine. She was taking her shoes off when he joined her in the bedroom.

“I didn’t get a chance to tell you how sexy you looked today.” He leaned down and kissed her, his green eyes as bright as ever.

“That’ll do.” She leaned back. “Remind me to give you an events list to take to Carl Monday.” She smiled as they lay on the bed.

“I’m not going to the base Monday.”

“Why not?”

“I’m going to Las Vegas for a briefing.”

“How long?” She frowned and rolled over.

“A few days.” He ran his fingers through her hair. “After that, I’m yours for the rest of the year. I’ve requested no more sorties.”

“And you actually think they’ll grant it?” She sighed. “How are we supposed to have another baby if you’re gone half the year?”

“I’m trying to work on that.” He kissed the back of her neck.

“Trent…” She rolled over to face him.

“Shh.” He kissed her. “I love you Lace.”

“Back at cha.” She smiled.

Monday morning, Lacey dropped Tristan off at daycare before heading to the office. She sat through a sales meeting and listened to all of the departments complain about beer prices going up. Halfway through, her pager went off. She quickly read the message and smiled. It was Trent telling her that he was at the Air Force base safe and sound.

“What about old beer?” Daniel James, the Vice President of their division, looked at the managers.

“I’m taking 200 cases of light beer with me to the baseball tournament. They’re dated next week.” Lacey looked over her notes.

“Thanks Lace. That helps out a lot.” Randy Parsons, the General Sales Manager, wiped his brow.

“What about the 14 lager kegs that are in the warehouse?” Phil Henry, the Operations Manager, looked over his notes as well.

“What about ‘Country Fest’?” She pointed on her calendar. “I could use… at least five or six kegs there.”

“There’s that WTEN music festival also.” Randy followed.

“Oh yeah, there won’t be a problem.” Lacey smiled. “We have tickets for the REO Speed Wagon concert Friday night if anyone’s interested.”

“I’ll take ‘em.” Phil smiled.

“You got ‘em.” She threw them at him. “I hate to skip out, but I need to get to the fairgrounds to set up for the Def Leppard concert.”

“Go on, ya big flirt.” Dan smiled at her.

“HR? Did you hear that?” She looked at Kim Stevens, the HR Manager.

“He’s the boss.” She smiled.

Wearing a beer T-shirt and jeans, Lacey wheeled in few kegs of beer. She set up the tap and smiled to hear music coming from the stage.

“That’s right! We are in Oklahoma!” Rick Savage, the bass player spoke over the microphone.

“Lacey McKinzy!” Joe Elliott, the lead singer yelled. “How’s our favorite beer wench?”

She flipped them all the finger and continued working on the tap. They laughed as she walked toward the stage.

“Hi!” They took turns hugging her.

“And it’s been Lacey Jones for nearly four years now, get it straight.”

“Excuse the fuck outta me, love.” He laughed. “How’ve you been?”

“Good.” She smiled.

“Please tell me you’re gonna party with us this go.” Phil Collen, the guitar player, swung his legs off the stage.

“I’m gettin’ old, guys.” She smiled under her sunglasses.

“The rugby Queen? Bollics!” Sav smiled at her. “You know you want to.”

“Rugby? I haven’t played… since Tristan!”

“C’mon, Lace. You’re representing the Beer Company. You have to make your customers happy.” Vivian Campbell, the co-lead guitar player, smiled at her.

“Fine!” She held her hand up in defeat. “I have to get back to work.”

“While you’re up, get me a beer.” Joe backed away, knowing he would have gotten elbowed in the gut if he didn’t.

“You guys better be good tonight.” She walked away.

“God, she’s still such a tease.” Rick Allen, the drummer, looked at Joe.

“Isn’t she though?” He smiled.

She returned that night wearing a business suit with her hair pulled back. She showed her pass and walked behind the stage to the dressing rooms.

“Hi lass!” Malvin, their tour manager, hugged her.

“Hey Mal.” She smiled. “Did the cases I sent get delivered to the crew alright?”

“It did, love. They are very happy.”

“Fabulous.” She smiled as her cell phone rang. “Excuse me.” She walked to a corner and answered. “This is Lacey.”

“Hey sexy.” Trent spoke.

“Hi!” She tried to speak over the music blaring from the PA on stage.

“Concert?”

“The Leps.”

“Oh.” He paused. That was the only band Trent hated. Lacey met them four years before she even knew him, when she first started as a Special Events sales person for the Beer Company. She told him stories of them going out and drinking and partying and having fun. He always felt that there was more to it, but never pushed. Lacey was the type of person that liked to drink and have fun with her friends. After all, she was in the beer business.

“Don’t worry, I’m only having a few drinks and then I’ll be home.”

“Where’s my boy?”

“My parents took him for the night.”

“How convenient.”

“C’mon, Trent.”

“I’m sorry.” He sighed. “I’ll let you get back to work. I’ll call when I get back home tomorrow. It should be around 1:00.”

“Cool. Be careful.”

“I will.”

“Love you.”

“You too, baby.” He hung up.

“There you are!” Joe walked out wearing a black T-shirt and black leather pants. “You still up for tonight?”

“Sure!” She took a glass of wine that he handed her. “Thanks.”

“You look great.”

“Thanks. I like the hair cut.”

“I don’t.” He huffed. “I like it better long. It gives the ladies somethin’ to hold onto.”

“Please.” She giggled. “That’s what asses are for.”

“Not if they’re bent over and in front.” He had a wicked smile on his face.

“Stop!” She pushed him away.

“How’s about a little refresher this visit?” He lowered his voice.

“That was a long time ago.” She smiled. “And I don’t think your girlfriend would like to hear about it.” She pointed to the blonde speaking with Sav.

“Probably not.” He sighed as the two joined them.

“Hey!” Sav hugged her. “What are the plans for tonight?”

“Oh, I’m making the plans?” She smiled.

“You’re the local.” Bobbie, Joe’s girlfriend, smiled at her.

“I’ll throw somethin’ together.” She reached for her phone.

After the show, Lacey drove the Beer Company van back to her office. She waited for a few minutes and then walked out to see a limo waiting. The door opened and Phil jumped out. “C’mon, already!”

“Fuck off!” She smiled as she climbed in.

They went to a few different bars and had beer and shots. Lacey switched to Diet coke at the second bar.

“You’re no fun anymore.” Sav smiled at her.

“I promised the hubby I’d go home early.” She smiled at him.

“That’s no fun.” Joe frowned.

“I didn’t say it was!” She pointed at him. “He just doesn’t seem to trust me around you guys.”

“Can’t say that I blame ‘im.” Sav whispered in her ear.

“I’m spoken for, Mr. Savage.” She giggled as he breathed into her ear.

“So am I.” He continued.

“Stop!” She pushed him away. “Behave yourself.”

“Party pooper.” Joe watched her.

“I’ve gotta go.” She rose to her feet. They all took turns hugging her. She walked out and called a cab.

***

Lacey sat in her office and waited the next day for Trent’s phone call. It never came. She picked Tristan up and they went home. There, she made dinner until there was a knock on the door. “Stay out of the cookies.” She smiled at him as she walked to the door.

Trent was standing there carrying a dozen of the biggest reddest roses she had ever seen. “I’m sorry I forgot to call.”

“You’re on my shit list.” She crossed her arms and returned to the kitchen.

“Daddy!” Tristan ran to him with his arms out.

“Hey squirt.” He kissed him. “You smell like cookies.”

Tristan looked at his mother and smiled.

That night, Lacey was in bed reading when Trent joined her. He could tell she was still upset with him. He knew better than to not call her when he returned. It was just part of being a pilot’s wife. She wanted to be reassured that nothing went wrong and he was home safe and sound.

“How much vacation do you have?” He climbed under the sheets.

“Two weeks.” She continued to read.

“I have 30 days of leave available.”

“Congratulations.” She smirked.

“Why don’t we go somewhere? Just the two of us. We can send Tris to my parents house.”

“What did you have in mind?” She finally threw the magazine on the floor.

“Hawaii?”

“Wow. You really are kissin’ my ass.” She giggled as he kissed her neck.

“And what a lovely one it is too.”

They made plans, bought tickets, and packed. The week before they left, Trent walked in from work and sat in front of the TV.

"What's wrong?" Lacey went through a bag of goodies she purchased from Victoria's Secret.

"Nothing." He smiled.

"Liar." She crossed her arms. "You have a sortie, don't you?"

"Two days before we leave." He sighed.

"And then two days becomes a week… it always happens that way! Can't someone else do it?"

"It's a complicated mission, Lace. I don't trust anyone else."

"Well that's just great!" She threw the bag at him and stormed off to the bedroom.

That was the last straw. His last lifeline. His last chance. She made up her mind and decided that there was no turning back.

A few days later, Trent packed his things and watched his wife sleep. He knew she didn't want him to go, but it was his job. He sat beside her and ran his fingers through her hair. She woke up and watched him.

"I love you." He whispered.

"Bye." She rolled away from him.

"Lace, please don't do this."

"I'm not doing anything." She sighed.

He watched her for a moment, deciding what to say. "Take care of Tris. I'll be home soon."

"I can honestly tell you that right now, I don't care." She spat.

He hung his head as he walked out the door.

***

The next evening, Lacey finished packing after she and Tristan ate pizza. They were watching cartoons on TV when there was a knock at the door.

Carl was standing at the door with a Colonial and a General behind them. He took his hat off with tears in his eyes.

"Oh my God." She covered her mouth and took two steps back.

"I'm sorry, Lace." He cried.

"No!" She looked past him at General Grady.

"Captain Jones was shot down this morning."

"And you're just now telling me?" She yelled at them.

"Shh." Carl held her. He looked up to see Tristan peeking around the corner.

"Why weren't you with him, Carl?" She sobbed.

"I sprained my wrist and they wouldn't let me. I'm so damn sorry, Lace."

"We're here if you need us, Lacey." Colonial Peterson extended his hand.

"Thank you." She walked into the kitchen and grabbed Tristan.

Chapter 2

Two years passed by in a flash. Tristan started kindergarten and it nearly broke Lacey’s heart. He was growing into such a handsome young man. She would often catch herself starting at him, imagining him in 20 years.

“I’m home Mom!” He ran into the house from the bus.

“How was school?”

“We drew pictures.” He handed her one.

“This is good, Tris. You want to be an artist?”

“No, they don’t make enough money. Papa wants me to play golf.”

“Of course he does.” She smiled. “Are you going with me to practice? Your God parents are going to be there with Brody.”

“Cool.” He climbed onto the counter and grabbed a cookie.

“C’mon.” She grabbed her bag.

“Get it Lace!” Jim Sullivan, her rugby coach and close friend yelled. Jim was her coach when she first began to play rugby in college. His wife Jennifer and he were the godparents of Tristan. Their son Brody and Tristan were close friends as well. After Trent’s death, Jim talked Lacey into playing again on the Oklahoma Women’s Rugby Football Club team.

“Wrap up that tackle! You know better than that!” He yelled at her.

She picked herself off the ground and went for another tackle. “Much better!”

She walked up to Jennifer after practice and took a drink of water. “How are ya?” Jen smiled.

“I’m good. Busy at work, though. It’s that time of year again.”

“Any dates lately?”

“A few, why?”

“Just wondering.”

“Why?” She smiled.

“Brandon likes you.”

“I don’t date rugby players, Jen. You know that. No ruggers and no beer men.”

“He still likes you and I promised to talk to you.”

“Ugh!” She laughed. “He can like me all he wants. It won’t happen.”

“Have you done any better?”

“I went out with the owner of the race track last weekend. He just kept talking on his cell all night.”

“Did you sleep with him?”

“Jen!”

“Well?”

“No!”

“You need a good one night stand, Lace. I’m serious. Like the old days.”

“I’m no where near the person I was in the old days.”

“Maybe you should be. Men flocked to you then. Remember when Def Leppard would come to town? We’d all go out and every one of them wanted you.”

“Like I said, that was a long time ago.” She sighed. “I need to get home. Carrie’s coming in tomorrow to spend the week.”

“You need a babysitter so you girls can go out some time this weekend?”

“Maybe.” She smiled. “Tristan! Let’s go!”

***

“Hey!” Lacey hugged Carrie Hinton as she walked off the plane. They had grown up living next door to each other in Illinois and had been best friends for 20 years.

“You look great!” She hugged her.

“You too.” She smiled. “Where’s Tristan?”

“Ice Capades with Brody and a few other friends. Jen and Jim must have been feeling adventurous, it’s the boys’ 1st slumber party.”

“Wow. So it’s just the two of us?”

“Yup. Wanna drink?”

“You damn hick.” She giggled as they walked through the airport.

After a few drinks, Carrie thought that Lacey was relaxed enough to talk to her.

“So? Are you dating yet?”

“Have you been talkin’ to Jen?” She huffed. “A little.”

“And?”

“Guys my age are so boring! All they care about is their precious stocks and investments. The last guy I went out with spent the entire evening talking to his stock broker on the cell!”

“Did you sleep with him?”

“No! He wasn’t worth my time.”

“You need a one night stand.”

“Only if he’s sexy.” She finally smiled.

“What about a baseball or football player?”

“College or pro?” She looked at her with an ornery smile.

“Either.”

“Have you met any of the pro athletes around here? They’re complete jerks.”

“So? They’re male and have a pulse.”

“Carrie!” She laughed as she ordered another beer. “Oh, the Leps will be in town next weekend. You sure you can’t stay an extra day?”

“Def Leppard? Didn’t you sleep with Joe a few years ago?”

“There was no sleeping involved.” She giggled. “No, it was Rick Savage. Joe walked in on us and hasn’t let me live it down in eight years.”

“Any potential?”

“No! I’m just their beer wench. I hook them up when they’re in town.”

“What about Sav?”

“No. They’re just friends. Besides, they’re all married or have girlfriends now. Last I heard, Sav has a baby.”

“Bummer.”

“So? You wanna go or not?”

“Hell yes!”

“Cool.”

***

“Lacey Jones, line 1…” The receptionist spoke over the intercom.

She sighed and looked up and Carrie. “Even on my day off.” She walked around her desk to the phone.

“This is Lacey.”

“Who is this guy deliverin’ our beer?” A British voice shouted. “And why aren’t you here?”

“Hi Phil. I’m on vacation.” She sat at her desk and smiled at Carrie.

“He’s not nearly as nice to look at as you are.”

“Gee thanks.”

“You comin’ out?” Sav grabbed the phone.

“Maybe. I don’t seem to have a pass, though. Mike’s workin’ the concert tonight.”

“We shall have to remedy that.”

“Get your ass over here!” Joe stole the phone. “We wanna go out before the gig.”

“I have a guest visiting.”

“Male or female?”

“Female, Joe.” She huffed.

“Is she cute?”

“She’s married.”

“So are you.”

There was silence. Lacey didn’t know what to say next.

“You and Mr. Wonderful still together?”

“Uh… not exactly.”

“I’m sorry, Lace.”

“No you’re not.” She tried the best she could not to cry.

“I am sorry, love.” His voice turned gentle. It was a side of him she never saw before. “I’ll meet you at the gates and we’ll get you and your friend in here, all right?”

“Fine. See you in a bit.” She hung up.

The guys all introduced themselves to Carrie upon their arrival. They walked back to the green room where an Indian feast was waiting.

“Wine?” Sav handed the girls each a glass.

“Thanks.” Lacey noticed Joe staring at her. She sat beside him at the table. “What’s on your mind?”

“You wanna talk about it?”

“Why?”

“Because I know you cared about him very much.” He took her hand and acknowledged the fact that she no longer had a wedding ring on.

“He was shot down and killed. A few weeks after the last time you were here.”

“You poor thing.” He hugged her.

“What’s up with that?” Sav asked Phil.

“No clue.” They turned to Carrie.

“Trent was killed in combat a few years ago. I would imagine she’s telling him about it.”

“Buggar!” Sav watched. “’E’s gonna make his move.”

“What do you mean?” Carrie watched her.

“Nothin’.” Phil smacked his arm.

They went through a few bottles of wine before the concert. Lacey was having a lot of fun and Carrie was glad to see it.

“We’re off for a few days, ya know.” Sav spoke to Lacey. “Is there any way you could show us around tomorrow?”

“I have a rugby match tomorrow morning.”

“You’re playin’ again? Good on ya!”

“Yeah, but I’m considered one of the ‘old girls’. Do you have any idea how hard that is to hear?”

“Been there, done that.” He chuckled. “You guys wanna see Lacey ‘ere play rugby tomorrow?”

“You playin’ again?” Joe looked up from reading a play list. “I’d love to go.”

“I’ll give you directions.” She smiled. It was amazing just how much these guys boosted her self-confidence. They always had a way of cheering her up and this time was no exception.

After the concert, they loaded up into the limo and did the town. Lacey had made provisions this time, and all of her best accounts were waiting. They ended up in a bar called InCahoots where she and Joe danced.

“He dances?” Carrie watched them.

“Only when he’s drunk.” Vivian laughed.

“”avin fun?” They two-stepped to a country song.

“When did you learn to two-step?” She giggled.

“Bobbie taught me.” He rested his hand on the small of her back.

“How is she?”

“Don’t know. We broke up last year.”

“Really? I’m sorry.”

“That’s all right.” He pulled her closer.

Joe and Lacey were still dancing when the bar tender announced last call.

“It’s been a long time since you closed down the bar with us, love.” Sav smiled as they returned to the table.

“It’s about time, then.” She smiled as Joe stood behind her.

“Need a ride home?” Joe whispered in her ear.

“We can call a cab.” She closed her eyes as he wrapped his arms around her shoulders.

“You sure?” He brushed his nose against her ear.

“Positive.” She looked at Carrie. “You still goin’ to the match tomorrow?”

“I wouldn’t miss it.” He kissed her cheek.

“Good night, then.” She smiled and walked to the door.

They all watched them leave.

“God, she’s still such a tease!” Joe finished off his beer.

***

“My, my, my.” Sav looked over his sunglasses at the girls in tiny black shorts and rugby jerseys.

“There she is.” Joe pointed to Lacey, who was practicing kicking the ball over the goal post. He then spotted Carrie and Lacey’s friend… the one with the long blonde hair… what was her name?

“Jen.” Sav smiled.

“Hey guys!” Jennifer stood up and hugged them. “It’s been a while.”

“Carrie.” Joe hugged her. “How ya feelin’?”

“Lace took care of me this morning, so I’m a lot better than I was.”

“Great.” They sat down beside them on the bleachers.

“Aunt Jenny!” Tristan ran up and hugged her.

“Hey Tris!” She looked up to see Lacey’s brother-in-law, Trevor, walking towards them.

“Where’s Mom?” He looked up.

“Right over there.” She pointed.

“Can I go talk to her?”

“Stop at the side lines next to Jim and see if you can get her attention.”

“Cool.” He ran off.

“Mom!” He yelled.

Lacey looked over to see Tristan on the sidelines.

“I’ll be right back!” She ran towards him.

“I’m guessing that’s Tristan?” Joe smiled. “Handsome boy.”

“Hey Jen.” Trevor hugged her.

“How are you?”

“Good.” He sat down. “How’s Lace?”

“She’s good. You stayin’ for the game?”

“Nah, I just wanted to drop the nephew off. Mom and Dad had a blast with him this week.”

“Can I stay at Brody’s tonight?” Tristan smiled.

“You just got home!”

“Please?”

“Ugh!” She hugged him. “I’ll let you know later.”

“Do good, Mom.” He smiled.

“Thanks.” She kissed him.

Everyone watched for 40 minutes as Lacey played one of her best games ever. She didn’t miss a single tackle, she was tight in the scrum, and she scored a try. During half time, she ran to the clubhouse and grabbed a sports drink. She looked up and saw Joe and Sav. She waved and then walked back to the field.

Lacey kicked the ball to the receiving team to begin the second half. She then ran ahead of her teammates and tackled the girl who caught the ball. This caused the ball to fly to her team and they in turn ran it in for a try.

“Good girl, Lace!” Jim yelled from the sideline.

She concentrated as she prepared for the extra kick. She made it.

“Go Lacey!” Joe applauded as Sav followed.

Oklahoma won 18 to 6 against Arkansas. The Oklahoma heat had taken its toll on the girls, so they stripped down to their sports bras and shorts as some on the guys from the men’s rugby team hosed them down with water.

“Thank you.” Lacey used her jersey to towel off.

“You’re drooling, Joe.” Carrie snickered.

She reached into her bag and pulled out a Beer Company tank top. She then joined the others as she changed from her cleats to her running shoes.

“Good game, Mom!” Tristan hugged her.

“Thank you!” She smiled at him.

“Lacey!” One of her teammates yelled. “Beer train!”

“I’ll skip this one out, guys!” She slid her sunglasses on.

“Go on, we’ll take Tris tonight.” Jen smiled at Carrie.

“Thanks.” She looked up as three of her teammates grabbed her.

They each held a full cup of beer and sat directly behind each other. They were across from the girls from Arkansas.

“Here are the rules!” Kevin, one of the guys from the men’s team yelled. “You chug the entire beer without spilling a drop. Then, you hold the cup up over your head. This is the sign for the person behind you to begin drinking. The first team through wins!”

They all gathered around the girls.

“Go!” The first girls began. Then the next. Lacey quickly chugged her beer and gasped for air upon her finish.

“Whoo!” Joe and Sav yelled and applauded.

“Oklahoma wins!” Kevin yelled.

“Oh my God!” Lacey struggled to stand.

“Not bad for an old lady!” One of her teammates hugged her.

“Fuck off.” She smiled.

They played a few more drinking games and sang a few rugby songs. Every one decided to split up and go out for dinner.

“Why don’t we go out?” Joe watched Lacey.

“I need a shower first.” She had a really great buzz going.

“Let’s go, then.” Carrie smiled at Sav.

“Where are we going?” She walked out wearing a tank top and jeans.

“Japanese?” Joe smiled.

“The only thing around here is Shoguns and it’s not as good as it used to be.” She rubbed lotion on her arms. “What about Pearls? Cajun?”

“Spicy!” Sav chuckled.

“Oysters.” Lacey flirted with Joe. “The next best thing to sushi.”

“I’ll drive.” He took her keys.

After a few bottles of wine, oysters, and crawfish, the entire group was acting loopy. They left there and drove down to the river where they sat on the rocks and talked.

“You’re being incredibly persistent this time.” Lacey looked at Joe.

“And you’re still resisting.” He smiled at her.

“I’m not the same person I used to be. I’m not interested in one night stands.”

“It doesn’t have to be, ya know.” He took her hand.

“And what would it be then? You’re on tour and I’m in Oklahoma.”

“Lace…” He reached for her as she pulled away.

“Get it out of your head now, Joe. We will never be more than friends.”

“What happened between you and Lace?” Carrie spoke to Sav.

“What do you mean?” He smiled.

“She told me she slept… had sex with you.” She smiled.

“After a gallon of tequila.” He grinned. “She and Joe have been flirting since they met. I know she likes him, she just won’t admit it.”

“I’m asking about you two.”

“One time we were here, there was a party at the rugby club house. We played naked musical chairs with a gallon of tequila that was passed around. Well, Joe’s wife was there so he could only watch. Lacey and I had too much to drink, so it was now or never. I pulled her into the weight room and we…” He blushed. “Joe walked in on us and was pissed. He wouldn’t speak to me for a very long time over that one.”

“Can I at least call you again?” Joe pleaded.

“Why?”

“You’re a blast to speak with.” He smiled as she laughed. “And I love to make you laugh.”

“I suppose.” She sighed. “You’re not going to give up this time, are you?”

“Nope. And I don’t think you really want me to.”

“You don’t know that.” She stood and walked to her truck.

They went back to Lacey’s house. She stood in the driveway and crossed her arms. “It was a blast, guys.”

“You’re kicking us out?” Sav smiled.

“I need to go get Tristan in the morning.”

“What does that have to do with us coming in for a few beers?” Joe looked at her.

“Everything.” She looked away.

“You really need to loosen up.” He smiled as he walked very close to her.

“Stop it!” She pushed him away.

“You want me, admit it.” He cupped her face with his hands.

“Joe!” She squealed as he kissed her. When she didn’t resist, he pushed her lips apart with his tongue. She brought her hands up to his chest and stepped closer to him.

“Would you like to stay in his hotel room tonight? I think he’ll be stayin’ here.” Sav spoke to Carrie as they walked into the house.

Her head was spinning as she looked up at him.

“I’ve waited five years to do that again.” He smiled.

“Not bad.” She finally smiled.

“Can I come in then?”

“No. We both know what’ll happen.”

“Why is that such a bad thing?”

“Because!” She turned away from him. “I know you, Joe. And I know how I feel about you. And I don’t want my first relationship after Trent to leave me devastated.”

“You don’t know that!” He angered. “You are so stubborn!”

“No, I’m realistic.” She walked into the house.

Sav looked up from pouring a drink. “C’mon.” Joe huffed.

“You sure?” He looked at Lacey.

She nodded.

Joe turned around and looked at her. “I am going to call you.”

“I might answer.” She tried not to smile.

Chapter 3

“This is Lacey.” She sat at her desk and read over papers.

“InCahoots refused the delivery, Lace. What should I do?” One of her delivery drivers spoke.

“Refused delivery? Why?”

“They wanted to talk to Dan.”

“Wait a sec, who did?”

“Stephanie, the manager.”

“Shit. I’ll go out there in a few minutes.”

“Thanks boss.” He hung up. Her phone rang again. “Yo.” She huffed.

“Do you have any use for 400 cases of close to date beer?” Randy asked.

“What are they?”

“24 pack cans.”

“Uh… there’s a baseball tournament in Norman this weekend. Will that due?”

“I hope so. Thanks Lace.”

“No prob.” She hung up only to hear her phone ring again.

She was about to let her voice mail system answer, but decided on the forth ring to answer. “Lacey Jones.”

“I told you.” Joe spoke.

She stopped everything and looked up at her wall.

“Lacey?”

“Hi Joe.” She finally spoke. “I’m sorry, I was ready to hear another bitcher when I answered.”

“How are you?” He continued.

“I’m good. Busy, but good.”

“And Tristan?”

“He’s looking forward to school in August. He’ll be in the first grade.”

“How exciting.” He chuckled. “Do you think he’d like to go to Six Flags this weekend?”

“In Texas?”

“We’re in Houston and have a few days off. Phil’s boy wants to go to Six Flags.”

“Why? Astro World’s in Houston.”

“Rory usually gets his way.”

“I see.” She smiled to herself.

“So? You up for it?”

“I don’t know. The men’s team is playing Colorado and I was really looking forward to it.” She thought of a quick excuse.

“That was lame.” He answered.

“My parents are having a cookout Sunday.”

“We can have you back by then.”

“You’re not taking no, are you?”

“Nope.”

She sat back in her chair. “I’m not sleeping with you.”

“You and Tristan can have your own room.” He chuckled.

“Smart ass.” She laughed.

“Please Lace? I think you’ll have fun.”

“Fine.” She sighed. “We’ll drive down Friday when I get off work.”

“We’ll meet you at the pizza place at the Galleria.”

“I’ve gotta go. I have a few fires to put out here, or I won’t be able to go.”

“By all means, fight the fires.”

“Bye Joe.”

“Bye.” He hung up.

***

“Tristan! Settle down!” Lacey tried to keep up with him in the mall.

“Come on, Mom!” He pulled her hand.

Joe was waiting for them in front of the entrance to the restaurant. He smiled when he saw Tristan dragging his mother through the mall.

“Hi Joe!” Tristan smiled.

“Hey! You ready for pizza?”

“Yes!”

“Let’s go.” He took his hand and led them in to a table where Phil, his son Rory, Sav, his son Tyler, Rick, and his daughter Lauren were sitting.

“Hey Lace!” They took turns hugging her. She sat next to Phil and sat Tristan next to her so that Joe wouldn’t.

“How’s it goin’?” She looked around.

“Not bad. You?”

“Busy. Between all the stuff at work and Western Trials, I’ve barely had enough time to spend with Tris.”

“We eat pizza a lot now.” He smiled as the men laughed.

“Western Trials?” Sav looked at her.

“I’m trying out for the Western Territory Women’s Rugby Team. It’s the first step towards the Women’s National Team.”

“And what happens if you make the National Team?” Rick watched Joe.

“Then Tris gets a tutor and we do Europe.”

“You’d quit your job?” Joe looked at her.

“Yup. The house is paid for and Trent had a few investments from his flight pay. We could just live off the interest from those and travel with the team.”

“Can we go play?” Lauren asked her father.

“Sure.” He smiled.

“We’ll call you when the pizza gets here.” Phil spoke to Rory.

“So where are the girls?” Lacey looked around the table.

“Shopping.” Rick smiled.

“Ah, ha.” She sipped on a beer that was placed in front of her. “Thus the trip to the mall.” She smiled.

“Exactly.” Sav smiled.

This was nice. She was with the guys and they weren’t pulling a full court press trying to flirt with her. They were just talking. Of course it was because their wives were with them, but it was still nice. Joe was even keeping his distance a little, which relaxed her.

The ladies returned while the kids were eating pizza. Lacey met Paige, Sav’s girlfriend, and Anita, Phil’s new wife. She had met Stacy, Rick’s wife, a few years ago. Lacey knew there were plans for dinner with the adults, because none of them were eating.

“Malvin and his daughters are baby sitting for us tonight.” Phil spoke as if he were reading Lacey’s mind.

“And we have reservations for dinner.” Joe took her hand.

“You are such a sneak.” She pulled her hand away and crossed her arms.

“You have no idea.” Stacy smiled at her.

They went to the hotel where Lacey checked in and unpacked. She called to Joe’s room and took a deep breath.

“’Ello?”

“How should I dress?” She smiled to herself.

“Something red and sexy.”

“Where are we going?”

“A piano bar.”

“I’ll call you when I’m ready.”

“I’ll be waitin’.”

Red just happened to be Lacey’s favorite color. She unzipped her garment bag and pulled out a dress. It was short and red with spaghetti straps and had a beaded design all over it. She bought it that afternoon before picking Tristan up from day care. She then changed, freshened her makeup, and called Joe.

“I’m ready.”

“I’m there.” He quickly gathered his things and walked to her hotel room. He took a deep breath and knocked on the door. Then, as she opened it, he quickly lost his breath.

“Is this okay?”

“It’s… perfect.” He looked over her entire body.

“I’d like to talk to Tris before we leave.”

“Shall we?” He held his arm out for her.

She watched him for a moment and then took it.

They walked into the kids’ room to see Sav and Paige talking to Malvin. His eyes widened as he looked at Lacey. “Wow.”

“Have fun, Mom.” Tristan waved as he and Lauren played a video game.

“Thanks, son.” She smiled at him.

“Yeah, have fun kids.” Sav smiled at Joe.

He raised his eyebrow and smiled as they walked out.

True to his word, Joe and Lacey went to dinner and had a great time without him making a move on her. She was surprised and actually a little disappointed at the same time. Fighting Joe off had become her favorite activity for the last few years. She always had to keep him a little interested; or else he might stop.

They stopped at the kids’ room in the hotel. All of them were asleep, including Malvin.

“Looks like my roommate bailed on me.” She smiled as they returned to the hallway. She was waiting for a come-on line from him, but he just smiled.

“You really are serious about this, aren’t you?” She stopped at her door.

“I’ve waited a long time for you.” He brushed his hand across her cheek. “And I’m trying desperately not to fuck it up.”

“You’re so charming.” She smiled.

“Don’t let the guys know, eh?” He smiled. “Good night, Lacey.”

“Good night.” She sighed. She knew that the empty bed awaited her. That was probably one of the hardest parts about being single again. The empty bed. She slowly turned the handle and opened her door. She stopped and stared into the room for a moment.

“There’s a good movie on tonight.” Joe noticed her hesitation. “I could bring a few beers over.”

“That’s a good idea.” She smiled.

“Why don’t you change into comfy clothes and I’ll be right back?”

“Thanks.” She walked in.

They both wore old T-shirts and shorts and they lay across her bed and watched television. He lay across the head of the bed and she lay directly in front of him. Throughout the course of the movie, his hand ended up resting on her hip. She closed her eyes and enjoyed the feel of his hands on her.

He looked down to find that she was asleep. He snuggled up behind her and closed his eyes, as he smelled the sweet scent of her hair. He wrapped his arms around her as she placed her hands on his. “Thank you.” She whispered, half asleep.

“For what?” He kissed her cheek.

“For staying with me.”

“I’d do anything for you.” He waited for a response, but she was asleep.

***

The next morning, she woke up alone. Joe had thrown a blanket over her and left. She took a shower and dressed into shorts and a sleeveless shirt. She then went over to get Tristan.

“You need a bath.” She smiled.

“Why? I’m just going to get sweaty.” He protested.

“And then you’ll take another one.” She pushed him into the room.

As Tristan finished dressing, there was a knock at the door. Lacey opened it to see Joe.

“Ready for breakfast?”

“Where?” Tristan ran in with a toothbrush hanging out of his mouth and toothpaste dripping from his chin.

“International House of Pancakes!” Joe chuckled.

“Cool.”

“Go rinse your mouth out.”  She pushed him back into the bathroom as she laughed.

“How did you sleep last night?” He leaned against the door.

“Better than I have in a while.” She flirted with him. “When did you leave?”

“This morning. I think I was getting a little too comfy. You probably would have ended up smacking me, so I went ahead and left.”

“You never know until you try.”

“I know you. You would have, trust me.” He smiled.

“I’m ready!” Tristan ran out with only shorts and tennis shoes on.

“Where’s your shirt?”

“The girls like men who show their chests.”

Joe tried his best not to laugh, as did Lacey. They then looked at each other.

“You’ve been talkin’ to Rory, haven’t you?” She smiled.

“He said that his Dad never wears a shirt on stage.”

“Well I do, and I’m much cooler than Phil.” Joe smiled.

“Can I have a shirt like yours then?”

“If you get dressed and come on! I’m starvin’!” He returned his eyes to Lacey.

“Kids.”

“Never a dull moment, is there?” He laughed.

Breakfast was an experience. The kids seemed to rule the roost as their parents sat at the other end of the table and talked. They then headed off for a whole day at Six Flags.

The group traveled around from ride to ride. Sav noticed after a while that Lacey and Joe were holding hands.

“Mom, I’m hungry.” Tristan stopped them around noon.

“And what would ya like?” Joe knelt down and asked him.

“Turkey leg.” He smiled.

“Would ya like to split one with me?”

“No, I want my own.”

“They’re awful big, Tris.” Lacey smiled.

“He’s a man. He can handle it.” Joe smiled at her.

“By all means.” She stepped aside as they walked to the turkey leg vendor. “I’m going to get a hot dog.”

“We’ll save a table.”

“Joe’s really getting into this family thing.” Phil spoke to Sav.

“He and Tristan are getting on better than you and Rory.” He answered.

“You think he and Lacey are really gonna do this?” Rick joined them.

“He thinks so.” Sav watched as Lacey joined them at a table.

“I suppose that’s all that matters then.” Phil smiled.

“What’s next?” Lacey looked over the map of the park.

“Let me see.” Joe scooted next to her and looked over her shoulder. “Dolphin show?”

“Cool!” Tristan smiled as grease dripped down his elbows from the turkey leg.

Lacey giggled and looked at Joe. His face was very close to hers. He wanted terribly to kiss her, but he refrained. There was no telling how she’d react for him doing it in front of her son.

“What about the Batman show?” Joe returned his attention to the map.

“Do they fight?” Tristan spoke with a mouth full of turkey.

“Probably, it’s Batman!” Joe laughed.

“Mom doesn’t like fighting.” He swallowed.

“It’s just Batman.” Joe looked at her.

“I suppose.” She sighed. “But you know it’s just pretend, right? There will be no hitting anyone afterwards.”

“I know!” He scowled.

Rick walked up to them. “We’re takin’ the kids to the dolphin show. Why don’t you go have fun?”

“Cool!” Tristan dropped his turkey leg.

“Why don’t you finish eating first?” Lacey smiled.

“I’m full.” He stood up.

“Tristan Michael!” She looked at him.

He stopped and stared at her for a moment. His mother never used his middle name unless he was in trouble. “I’ll be there after lunch.” He returned to his seat.

“We have to finish up lunch anyway.” Rick smiled at him.

“Thanks mate.” Joe smiled at him. “So?” He returned his attention to Lacey.

“I don’t know.” She looked at the map. “Tower of Terror?”

“Very doable.” He smiled.

“So?” Phil caught up with them a few hours later.

“What?” Joe looked at him.

“Did you two have fun?” He smiled.

“Yeah, we rode about five rides.” Lacey smiled as she held tightly onto Joe’s hand.

“Anything else?” He pouted.

“Nope.” Joe grinned.

“Mom!” Tristan ran up to them. “Look what I won!” He handed her a plastic jet. “It’s just like Dad’s!”

Lacey froze as the smile quickly vanished from her face. “Did you pick that out?”

“Yes!”

Joe watched quietly as Lacey stared at the plane. “That’s nice, Tris.” She crossed her arms.

“How was the dolphin show?” Joe changed the subject.

“It was fun!” He smiled.

“Cool!” He smiled at him. “I’m thirsty, you want something to drink?”

“Yeah.”

“I’ll be back.”

He returned a few minutes later with two sodas. Lacey still had an odd look on her face.

“You alright?” He wrapped his arms around her.

“I am now.” She smiled as she rested her head on his chest.

“What would you like to do tonight?”

“What did you have in mind?”

“Dinner and maybe a movie?”

“Sounds like a plan.” She smiled.

No sooner had Joe and Lacey finished dinner, her pager went off. She read the message and looked at Joe.

“Mal says that Tristan’s sick.”

“We’d better get back then.” He sighed.

“I’m sorry.”

“That’s alright. We can watch another movie at the hotel tonight.” He smiled.

They ended up in Lacey’s room. She leaned against the headboard as Tristan cuddled in her arms. He was asleep before the opening credits were finished.

“You look comfy.” Joe moved her hair from her face.

“He doesn’t let me hold him very often anymore.” She smiled. “I’ll take it when I can get it.”

“You’re such a good mother. I’m surprised you don’t have more.”

She watched him for a moment. “Trent and I were trying when he died.”

“I’m sorry.” He lowered his eyes.

“I have to talk about him. Does it make you uncomfortable?”

“A little. But then again, nothing’s gonna happen, remember?” He smiled.

“I don’t drop everything and drive three hours for just anyone.” She smiled.

“I know.” He ran his fingers through her hair. “Thank you for coming. I’ve always enjoyed your company, but this weekend has been terrific.”

“It hasn’t been too bad.” She flirted. “I’m gonna lay him on the other bed.”

“I’ll be here.” He smiled.

She returned a moment later and sat beside him. “Can I ask you a question?”

“Sure.” He wrapped his arm around her as they cuddled in front of the television.

“What do you expect to happen between us?”

He stared at the tube as he thought of something to say. “Expectations are overrated, don’t cha think?”

“Joe.” She gently touched his cheek and pushed his face toward her. “Is it love or lust?”

He smiled as he rested his forehead on hers. “A little of both, I suspect.”

“You’ve been chasing me for so long… what’ if you’re disappointed?”

“I don’t think that’s possible.”

“And how can you be so sure?”

“Because.” He looked into her eyes. “I love you. I always have.”

She closed her eyes as he gently brushed his lips across hers. She brought her arms around his neck as they lay back onto the pillows. He then kissed her chin, neck and ear with the same gentleness.

Her skin tingled with every touch. She found herself filling with anticipation as she ran her fingers through his hair. Her heart raced as his fingers found their way under her shirt, touching her skin. They were just about to reach her bra when there was a knock at the door. They looked at each other with the same breathless expression and then looked at the door.

“Lacey? Is Joe in there?” Malvin spoke.

“I’ll be right back.” He kissed her and then walked to the door.

“Impeccable timing, mate.” He huffed.

Lacey looked up to see that Tristan was waking up.

“We have a problem, lad. Three members of the opening act were thrown in jail last night in Houston. We need to go get them.”

“I can’t.”

“We need to go and get them, Joe. And all five of ya have to sign the check.”

“Fuck.” He sighed as he ran his fingers through his hair. “Fine.”

“I’m sorry, Joe.”

He mumbled something and shut the door. He then looked at Lacey who was once again holding Tristan.

“You feelin’ better?” He sat beside them.

“A little.” He smiled.

“Good.” He looked at Lacey. “We have to get back a little early.”

“I kinda got that impression.” She smiled.

“I’m going to go pack and then I’ll be back.”

“Okay.” She smiled as he kissed her cheek.

“Mom?” Tristan asked after he left.

“What?” She hugged him.

“Does Joe make you happy?”

“What do you mean?”

“Do you love him?”

“I don’t know, Tris. Love is a very complicated emotion.”

“You loved Dad, right?”

“Yes.” She sighed. No use in confusing the poor boy.

“Will you marry Joe?”

“No! Where is all of this coming from?”

“I just wondered.” He smiled.

A few minutes later, there was a knock on the door. She opened it to see Joe standing there with an extremely serious look on his face.

“Frowning causes wrinkles, ya know.” She smiled.

“I don’t care.” He pouted.

“Cheer up. It’s not the end of the world.”

“You’re right.” He sighed. “When are you leaving tomorrow?”

“Probably as soon as we get up.”

“I’ll call you tomorrow night, then.”

“Okay.”

He looked into her eyes for a moment, and then kissed her. They rest of the guys and their families walked past them, smiling and silently cheering. He flipped them all off without breaking their kiss. They both stopped and giggled.

“Bye Joe.”

“Goodbye, love.” He finally smiled before grabbing his bags. “Bye Tris. Take care of your Mum for me.”

“I will.” He waved.

Chapter 4

“Beer Company, how can I direct your call?”

“Lacey Jones, please.” Joe spoke over the phone.

“She’s on a business trip.”

“Really? No wonder she’s not answering her cell phone.”

“Would you like her e-mail address? I know she checks it a few times a day.”

“Sure.” He smiled.

Lacey walked in from a day at the brewery and turned on her laptop computer. She changed into her pajamas and returned to the computer after it had booted up. She then logged on and checked her e-mail. There were two messages from thevoice@dl.com. She opened the first and read.

“Hi. Heard you were on a little trip. Just thought you’d like to hear from me. I know I’d like to hear from you. We did a show in Salt Lake City last night and had some things stolen by fans off our bus. We’re all a little pissy about it, but what can you do? Well, time for sound check. Talk at you later. Joe.”

She smiled as she went to the next message.

“Well, I’m back. The sound’s fine. We’re in Colorado Springs tonight. Where are you anyway? It would be bloody wonderful if you were in Denver, but I shan’t press my luck. Truth is, I miss you so much I’d walk to Oklahoma City just to smell one of your sweaty rugby shirts. Romantic, ain’t it? Do me a favor and let me know you’re getting these. I’d hate to find out that I’m sending mushy stuff to some guy named Fred. Talk to ya later. Joe.”

She sat back in her chair and thought for a moment. Colorado Springs was only 40 minutes away. Maybe…

She dialed the phone.

“Mal.”

“Hey Mal, its Lacey.”

“How goes, love. The lads just stepped on, they did. I can tell Joe you called.”

“I’d rather keep it a secret. Do you know what time he’ll be back at the hotel?”

“You in town?”

“I will be by the time they finish their set.”

“Call when you get here. I can meet you at the entrance and get you in.”

“Thanks Mal.”

The guys walked off stage and to the showers. Lacey leaned against the wall with her arms crossed and smiled as they walked past her.

“Hey!” Sav smiled at her.

“Hi.” She looked for Joe.

“He’ll be here in a sec.” Vivian winked at her.

“Thanks.” She returned his wink.

Joe followed along a moment later. A smile quickly rose to his face when he saw her. “Sorry Darlin’, you have to wait for an autograph just like every one else.”

“Bummer.” She giggled.

“What time do you have to be back?”

“There’s a meeting at the brewery tomorrow at 10:00.”

“Really? I have you for the night?” He kissed her.

“As long as you get your ass in there and take a shower.”

“Wait right here.”

He returned a few minutes later. “Ready?”

“What about meet n’ greet?”

“Did that before the show.” He took her hand.

“How convenient.”

“Come on.” He tugged her arm.

They stepped into the limo and sat back in the seat. Joe immediately wrapped his arms around her and kissed her hair.

“God, you smell good.” He whispered.

“I missed you.” She smiled.

“How much?”

“Enough to drive to see you again.”

“I don’t know if there are any more hotel rooms available.”

“I guess I’ll just have to stay with you then.” She rubbed his hand.

“There’s only one bed and I can’t guarantee I’ll stay on my side.”

“I’m counting on it.” She kissed him.

“I love it when you talk dirty.” He smiled.

They walked in to see candles lit, and a bowl of strawberries on the table. Next to the strawberries were a bowl of whipped cream and an opened bottle of champagne.

“You are such a little sneak.” She dropped her bag onto the floor.

“Have to keep you on your toes.” He kissed her. “Champagne?”

“Maybe later.” She grabbed his arm.

“Really?” He growled as he kissed her neck.

She slowly brought her hands up under his un-tucked shirt as he kissed her. She lightly rubbed his sides and stomach as he unbuttoned her shirt. He was amazed at the effect her touch had on him. Every place her finger tips wandered left a tingling sensation. He had to stop for a moment and catch his breath before leaning down to kiss her shoulder.

“What’s wrong?” She whispered.

“Not a thing.” He pushed her shirt off her shoulders and onto the floor.

“Good.” She smiled seductively as she pulled his shirt over his head.

“It’s been a long time since I’ve been undressed.” He again caught her lips.

“You poor baby.” She kissed his chin.

“You think Joe and Lace wanna go out tonight?” Phil asked Sav as they gathered in the lobby.

“We could call them.” He looked away.

“No!” Mal grabbed Phil’s hand as he picked up the phone. “They’re havin’ a bit of romance tonight. Leave ‘em alone.”

“Romance?” Vivian smiled. “Like what?”

“That’s none of our business.” Sav finally smiled. “He’ll tell us tomorrow anyway.”

“I don’t think so, mate. He’s caught the love bug pretty bad this time.” Mal smiled. “Candles and champagne.”

“Really?” All of the band mates stopped.

“Is there any way we can continue this horizontally?” Joe smiled as Lacey untied the string to his pants.

“That’s no fun.” She kissed his chest as he closed his eyes.

He moaned as he searched for the button of her jeans.

“Need help?” She pushed his pants down from his hips.

“Nope.” He unzipped her jeans and did the same. They stepped out of the pile of clothes and made their way to the bed.

“Much better.” He began to deliver little pecks all over her chest and stomach. He then reached under her and unfastened her bra, pulling the straps with him as he traced his fingers down her arms. He then brought his big, warm hands down her sides, grasping the lace of her panties as he slid them off.

“That’s quite a talent.” She watched him as he kissed every inch of her body while making it back up to her lips.

“Thank you.” He stopped at her belly to tease.

The fire inside her was growing so intense that she didn’t think she could wait any longer. She felt that if he didn’t end her torture soon, she’d go mad. Her heart skipped at every touch, and every kiss.

It took everything he had to control himself. He had never in his life wanted a woman like he wanted Lacey. He also knew that it had been a while since the last time she was with a man, and wanted to be gentle with her. He kept telling himself over and over in his head to slow down, but she was making it so extremely difficult.

“What are you waiting for?” She looked into his eyes as she wrapped her legs around him.

“I say we go knock on the door.” Rick smiled as they sat in the bar.

“Paybacks for all the times he did it to us?” Phil chuckled.

“I’m not doin’ it!” Sav sipped from a glass of wine. “He’d kill me!”

“Has he really waited all this time for her?” Vivian asked.

“Yup.” Phil answered. “I guess persistence pays off.”

“I wanted to make sure you were ready.” He kissed her as he gently slid into her.

She closed her eyes and let out a small whimper as he pushed his hips into hers. They began to move in rhythm as they stared deeply into one another’s eyes. It was the most intensely passionate moment Lacey ever felt. She held tightly to him as she felt her insides begin to shudder. As they increased, she let out a small yell.

“Lacey.” Joe moaned as he buried his head into her shoulder.

They laid silently for a moment, still holding tightly to one another. He finally moved his head to look into her eyes. They were filled with tears.

“That was beautiful.” She smiled.

He kissed her and then smiled himself. “I think the Earth moved for us.”

“I know it did.” She whispered.

“I love you Lacey.” He rubbed his nose against hers.

“I…” She stopped. “I can’t let my emotions get the best of me right now, Joe. Tristan’s the man in my life right now.”

“The look in your eyes tells me you care about me.”

“Oh God, I do.” She hugged him. “Can we please just take this slow?”

“Of course.” He kissed the end of her nose. “You ready for some champagne now?”

“Why don’t you bring the strawberries here too?” She smiled.

They made love twice more throughout the night, falling asleep in the early morning while in each other’s arms. Joe awoke and watched her sleep for a long while. He stroked her cheek and hair as he thought about the previous night.

“I do love you.” He whispered. “More than you can possibly imagine.”

Her eyes opened as someone kicked and knocked on the door. “Wake up!” Phil and Rick yelled.

“Nice.” He threw a pair of shorts on and answered.

“Ready for breakfast?” Phil looked in. “Lacey! You awake?”

“I am now.” She half-smiled as she spoke in a gruff voice. She wrapped the covers around herself and sat up.

“Are you nekked under there?” Rick laughed.

“Bye, lads.” Joe laughed as he tried to shut the door.

“What about breakfast?” Phil smiled.

“That’s what room service is for.” He closed the door after placing the “Do Not Disturb” sign on the knob.

He climbed under the covers and snuggled close to her.

“I need to get up.” She rubbed her cheek against his.

“Me too.” They remained in bed.

“I guess it’s settled then.” She closed her eyes.

“Un, hu.” He yawned. “What are your plans tonight? We’ll be in Boulder.”

“I’m supposed to fly back home at 6:00.”

“Fuck.” He sighed.

“I could be convinced to stay another day.”

“Really?” He kissed the back of her shoulder. “And how might I convince you?”

“Mmm. Keep doing that.” She moved her head so that he could have a better angle at her neck.

***

Lacey made it to her meeting ten minutes late. She then sat through three boring hours of sales briefings. When they were dismissed, she quickly ran to the hotel, gathered her things, checked out, and then headed to Boulder. There, she hung out with the guys, listened in on sound check, and had dinner with them.

After the show, she and Joe went to his hotel room where they again made love until the sun came up. The next morning, the guys boarded the bus for the drive to Minnesota. Joe walked her down to her rental car as the others boarded the bus.

“Be careful.” He smiled at her.

“You too.”

“Will you be reading your e-mail today?”

“Probably. Why?” She grinned at him.

“Just wondering.” He leaned over to kiss her.

“You better go.”

“I know.” He sighed. “I’ll miss you.”

“You too.” She kissed him one last time before climbing into the car.

“Bye, love.” He pounded on the roof of the car before turning around to board the bus.

“So?” Sav was reading a paper when he sat down.

“Huh?” He looked up.

“How was she?”

“I’m not telling.” He smiled.

“Why not? You’ve rated all the other ones.”

“She’s off the scale.” He leaned back into his seat. “Besides, you’ve been with her.”

“That was a long time ago and I was too drunk!”

“That’s not my problem.” He closed his eyes.

"Buggar!” He growled as he returned to his paper.
