Mending a Broken Heart
Chapter - 1
Night had fallen on the small snow covered town in Colorado by the
time she'd pulled through the gates and up to the main house. It had been a few years since she'd stepped
foot on the place she'd grown up on.
Too many.
She sighed as she pulled her bags from the back of the SUV and
trudged up the steps to the door. She
should have called first but she just wasn't ready to hear the 'I told you so
speech. There was no chance on putting
it off any longer. Hopefully, her
parents would just greet her with open arms and allow her the time and solace
she desperately needed.
“Elizabeth.” Her mother gasped as she opened the door.
“Hey mom.” She fell into her open arms before walking into the
house.
“What are you doing here?”
“In the morning?
Please? I’m just really
exhausted.” She pleaded.
Her mother nodded and turned toward the stairs. On the second floor, she said goodnight and
turned to head up the last flight to her old bedroom, on her own. She changed into a tank and flannel pants
then crawled into the big fluffy bed.
Sleep wouldn't come easy just as it hadn't in the month since her
divorce was final. After nearly ten
years together, five of which they had been married, her husband had filed for
divorce. An action that had crushed her
heart and her spirit. She'd loved and
supported him with everything she'd had and it meant nothing to him
anymore. Something she just hadn't been
able to grasp, at least, not yet.
She'd done the one thing she could think of. She'd run home. Here, she was safe from the media, photographers, his friends,
and him. There were only a few things
left to settle between them but she'd been unable to wait for the escape. Her friend, and confidante, Paige was the
only one she'd told where she'd be. She
needed time away from everything to mend her broken heart, and build herself
back up to the person she used to be before him.
Chapter - 2
He tossed and turned, trying desperately to get comfortable in
bed. It was useless considering the
alarm would be going off in just under an hour. He groaned as he rolled out of bed, pulled on a pair of
sweatpants, and walked downstairs.
It had been another sleepless night just as every night this week
had been since his ex-wife had disappeared.
She'd cleared out her apartment, placing her things in storage, before
heading out for parts unknown.
Granted, he wasn't privy to her every move anymore. The divorce had been his own doing and for
reasons he wasn't ready to discuss yet.
That didn't stop the fact that he still worried about her. It didn't mean that he wasn't hurting too.
"Mornin', mate."
The voice belted through the receiver as he picked up the phone.
"It's too bloody early to be that damn 'appy!" He
growled.
"Now, Joe, you know we're meetin' the lads this mornin'."
"I'm up. Just not
socialable yet."
"Well, get that way." Sav ordered. "They're getting
tired of your grumpy mood."
"Yeah? Well, I don't
see it improvin' for a while."
Sav rolled his eyes and sighed on the other end. His friend could be so stubborn sometimes.
"'Ave you ever thought that talkin' about it might 'elp?"
Sav asked.
"It's none of your damn business." He poured a cup of
coffee.
"We've been friends for over twenty years. I don't think there's much else I don't know
about you."
"I'll see you in an hour." Joe growled and hung up the
phone.
Sipping his coffee, he walked back upstairs to shower and get
ready. He knew his friend meant well,
they all had. They'd all tried to get
him to talk about it at some point or another.
He just didn't want them all to know what a bastard he was.
Phil, Vivian, and Rick walked out of their hotel near Dublin
Center, heading for their rental car.
"I sure as 'ell hope Joe's in a better mood today." Phil
rubbed his head.
"Tell me why he's so bent out of shape if he's the one that
divorced 'er?" Rick asked.
"You tell us and we'll all know." Viv climbed into the
car.
Chapter - 3
Elizabeth sat on the porch and looked out over the snow-covered
grounds of her parent's ranch. She'd
loved the peace and quiet here, the soothing silence mingling with the sounds
of nature.
"How are you today, dear?" Carol joined her, handing her
a hot cup of coffee.
"Better." She sighed. "It's still up and down."
"It will be for a while.
But, you know, you can't hide out forever."
"I know. I just needed
time to pull myself together."
"Not to kick you while you're down but, I never thought he
deserved you."
"Mom, please." Tears flooded her eyes again.
"Listening to everyone I know put him down doesn't help. I still love him so much."
"I know you do it's just too bad he didn't realize what he
had."
Her father stood at the door and listened to the agony in his
daughter's voice. He personally would
love to have a private conversation with his ex-son in law.
He was so lost in what he'd do to Joe that he'd almost forgotten he
held the phone in his hand.
"Beth, you have a phone call." He held the phone out for her. As she took it, her mother followed her
father back into the house.
"Hello?"
"I'm sorry, I had to call and make sure that you made it in
all right." Paige's voice washed over her.
"I got in late Sunday night." She sighed.
"How long do you think you'll stay? I miss you already."
"I don't know, as long as it takes. How's Tyler?" She referred to Paige and Sav's son.
"A handful. The other
guys are getting ready to go back to California. Rick and Joe met them for breakfast and then they're meetin' with
the producer." She turned to catch 1 1/2 year old Tyler scurrying across
the floor. "Hold on." She put the phone down and ran to catch him
before he reached the stairs. "Ok, I'm back."
They talked for a few minutes before Paige decided to mention Joe
again.
"You know, Joe's been in a down right mood since you
left."
"So?"
"It's like a combination of anger and worry that he doesn't
know where you are."
"It's none of his business anymore."
"I know." She paused. "I just thought you'd be
interested in knowing."
"I'm not interested in knowing anything about Joe Elliott's
life anymore."
"Point taken." She looked down to her squirming son.
"I really should go. Ty's antsy
and if the phone bill's to high, Rick will start to question the calls."
"Ok. I'll call in a
few days and we'll talk again."
"Sounds good."
"Paige?" She spoke before they could hang up.
"Thanks."
"Anytime, love."
She remained on the porch for most of the day. She skipped lunch, not feeling much like
eating. The thought of food lately
turned her stomach about as much as returning to Ireland had. Of course, that was one thing she wasn't
sure she'd ever do. At least not on a
full-time basis.
Paige looked up as the door opened. In walked Sav and the other members of Def Leppard. She raised her eyebrows, surprised to see
them.
"Sorry, love." Sav dropped a kiss on her cheek. "We
decided to move the meeting 'ere."
"That's fine." She swallowed. Good thing she'd hung up the phone when she did.
''Ello, Paige." Joe tried to smile at her.
"Joe." She said shortly as she turned to pick up Tyler.
"We'll just go upstairs so we're not in the way."
Joe watched as she walked up the stairs and wondered if she'd ever
be friendly toward him again. She'd
been merely civil with him since he filed for his divorce. She and Elizabeth had become friends right
away when Sav had begun dating her.
The thought hit him so fast he couldn't believe he hadn't thought
of it before. If Beth had told anyone
where she was going, it would have been Paige.
"Mate, I'll be right back." Joe bounded up the stairs in
search for Paige. He found her in the
den watching cartoons with Tyler. "Paige?"
"Yes?"
"Can I ask you a question?" He moved inside the room.
"Do....did....well, I was wonderin' if Beth told you where she'd went
to?"
Paige thought about Elizabeth's words. "Sorry, I don't
know."
"You sure?"
"I think I'd know if I knew." She frowned at him. "Besides, I don't think I'd tell you if
I did."
Joe nodded his head and walked back downstairs. She knew but he didn't blame her for not
telling him. He stopped and closed his
eyes as his mind filled with images of his wife. The devastation on her face when he'd told her he wanted a
divorce. A look that had remained on
her face in the months that followed.
The sadness, anger, and a loss of light in her eyes combined.
"Earth to Joe!" Phil yelled.
"Yeah, I'm comin'." He ran down the stairs.
Chapter - 4
Weeks went by and quickly turned into two months. With each day, Elizabeth found it a little
easier to cope. Her eating habits
improved and she'd started a nice little workout regiment. She was finally realizing that life might
possible go on without Joe. She visited
the doctor after the first two weeks here and still not sleeping but two or
three hours a night. He'd given her a
mild sleeping pill. The first full
night's sleep had done wonders for her.
She was to a point now that she didn't need to take them every
night. And that felt even better.
She wiped the sweat off her forehead and took a drink of
water. In the distance, she could hear
the phone begin to ring and her heart skipped a beat.
"Beth!
Telephone!" Her mother yelled from the kitchen.
"Thanks." She picked up the cordless on the table.
"Hello?"
"Ok, if you don't tell me that you're comin' back this time,
I'm going to worry that you won't be 'ere to help me plan this weddin'."
Paige sounded like she was nearly in tears.
"You know I'll be there." She sighed. "I've just
been tryin' to prepare myself for seeing him again.”
“I know.” Paige sighed.
“Paige?” Sav walked up the
stairs looking through the phone bill.
“I ‘ave to go.” Paige whispered to Beth.
“Ok.”
“’Ave you been makin’ a lot of long distant calls?” He looked up.
“I called the operator and she told me the area code was for a place in
Colorado." He shrugged his shoulders. "Who do we know there?"
Paige tried desperately to come up with something believable but
her mind was a complete blank. Before
she could respond, Sav's eyes lit up with comprehension.
"Beth?" He questioned.
"You tell that ass one thing and so help me you'll be sleepin'
alone for the rest of your life!" She pointed her finger at him.
"No. Of course I
won't." He continued to stare at her. "Why there?"
"Her parents." She tried to push back tears. "What
happened to them, Rick? They always
seemed so happy and I know that she loves him so much."
"I don't know, love." He pulled her into his arms.
"He won't talk about it."
"Neither will she."
"So, 'ow is she?"
"She sounds better every time I talk to her."
"Does she plan to ever come back?"
"She'll be 'ere for the wedding. I don't know beyond that."
Joe lounged in his hot tub and sipped on a beer.
"So, when is it going to be ok for me to fly out and see
you?"
"Soon." He
growled into the phone. "I just need to settle a few things first."
"That's what you told me two months ago." She sighed.
"I'm getting very impatient if you know what I mean."
"I know." He felt his growing erection throb.
"I guess I'll just have to take care of myself for now."
She huffed and hung up.
"Bloody 'ell!" He jumped out. If this is what he'd wanted, then he wasn't going to go to bed
with a hard on tonight. No sir!
Chapter - 5
Elizabeth took a deep breath to calm her nerves. She'd come on impulse after learning that
the group was currently in LA meeting with some record execs regarding the new
album they were working on.
Stepping out of the taxi, she paid the driver then walked up to the
door. After ringing the bell, she
waited. The thundering of little feet
on the other side was followed by a pair of bigger ones and then the door swung
open.
"Beth!" Paige threw her arms around her.
"Surprise." Beth smiled.
Paige noticed that it still didn't quite reach her eyes but
still.....she looked better than the last time she'd seen her.
"Come in." She pushed her through the door and into the
living room. "Now, let me look at you." She held her at arm length.
"Please stop." Beth sighed, her body starting to tremble.
"They're not 'ere and not due back before the weekend."
Paige tried to re-assure her.
"I can't believe I came."
The guys walked out of their meeting feeling frustrated. They'd been in this business for over twenty
years and they didn't seem to be able to get anywhere with their label. They'd been busting their balls all this
time for them to practically do nothing for them. How the hell were they suppose to sell the upcoming album if they
couldn't get any promotion and support?
"I need a beer!" Sav groaned.
"I'm with ya." Viv chimed in.
"We'll join you but we'll settle for just water." Rick
added.
"Joe?" Phil raised his eyebrows.
"Nah! You guys go
ahead. I'm goin' to go back to the
'otel."
The others turned and frowned at one another as Joe walked
off. Joe go back to the hotel? What's up with that?
Joe got out of the taxi and walked to the door. Checking the flowers in one hand and the
take out in the other, he rang the doorbell with his elbow.
"Yeah?" A tall blonde in her late twenties opened the
door. "Joe!"
"Hi, baby." He flashed a sexy, dimpled grin.
"Get your ass in here." She pulled him in by his shirt
collar.
Paige made lunch and they settled on the back deck to enjoy the
early spring weather.
"Have I told you that we've moved the weddin' date up?"
"No. Why?"
"Um....well....I don't want to upset you." Paige
hesitated.
"You won't. What, are
you pregnant again or something?"
"Actually, yes." Paige smiled.
"Really? Oh, that's
great!" She leaned over and hugged her.
"Thank you." She smiled. "Speakin' of the
weddin'. Are you here till then?"
"We'll see."
"Good."
They ate over chitter chatter regarding the wedding all the way
through Tyler's nap.
"You know," Paige's eyes lit up. "I've been thinkin'
of going to London and check out this dress shop I saw when Rick and I went to
visit his mum."
"London?"
"Yeah. My parents
could watch Ty and we could make a weekend out of it."
"Why not." She smiled.
Chapter - 6
The weekend went by for the girls like a whirlwind. Paige couldn't believe how much they'd
gotten done and it was a good thing.
She also noticed that Elizabeth seemed to come out of her shell a little
more.
"You know, we'll have to do that again some time." Paige
laughed as they walked through the airport after landing in Dublin.
"We will. I had a
blast."
"Great!"
Meanwhile, on a parallel terminal, Joe and his female companion
walked through toward the baggage claim.
He'd deliberately taken a later flight than the others had in order to
not have to explain to them who was with him.
Part of him just still wasn't ready.
"I can't wait to see your house." She gushed.
"We'll be there soon enough." He smiled.
"Good. That little
blowjob on the plane was just an appetizer for what I have planned for you when
we get there." She ran her hand down his chest and across the bulge in his
jeans.
Paige nearly collided with Elizabeth when she hadn't noticed she'd
stopped dead in her tracks.
"Beth? What is
it?" Paige gasped.
"It's her." Elizabeth barely whispered.
Paige followed her gaze and saw Joe and the girl. Immediately, her body filled with rage as
she noticed the tears flooding Beth's eyes.
"Let's just get out of here." Paige grabbed her arm.
Joe suddenly stopped as his eyes caught something familiar. He looked over and saw Paige ushering
Elizabeth through the corridor. His
heart clenched when he noticed the stricken look on her face.
"Damn." He cursed under his breath.
"She's in the past.
Let's go."
"Just wait." He huffed and took off following them.
He finally caught up with them outside near Paige's car.
"Beth."
"Go away, Joe." Paige turned and growled at him.
"We need to talk." He persisted.
Beth took a deep breath and wiped the tears from her eyes. When she turned, her face was hard as stone.
"You want to air our dirty laundry in the middle of an airport
parking lot?" She raised her eyebrows.
When he didn't answer, "I didn't think so."
"Then come to the 'ouse."
"You've got to be joking." She gave a disgusted laugh.
"You know what? There's really
nothing left to discuss, Joe. You can
have it because I really don't want it." She turned and climbed into the
car.
Joe stood dumbfounded as they drove off. How could she say that?
The last thing they'd needed to settle was their home, his home, in
Dublin. It had been a wedding present
from her parents and agreed upon to sell in the divorce. Only problem now was, Joe wanted to
stay. He couldn’t believe she’d given
up. She absolutely adored the place.
"Are you done?"
"Let's go." He took her hand and they walked over to
catch a taxi, his mind still reeling over Beth's words.
When the girls reached the house, Elizabeth ran straight up to the
room she'd been staying in and locked the door. Paige sat down the luggage and went in search of Sav. She found him in his music room, working.
"Richard Savage if you so much as tell me you knew about this,
I will personally cut off your dick!"
Sav's eyes bulged and he swallowed hard. "Know about
what?" He asked timidly.
"She won't talk any more about it but, she doesn't really have
to."
"What, Paige?"
"Joe has had a girlfriend.
We just ran into them at the airport."
"Beth's 'ere?"
"Yes."
"Ok, wait a minute." He crossed his legs. "So Joe
'as a girlfriend, it's not illegal."
"No but it's called adultery when he has one while he's still
married."
"You mean?"
She shook her head.
Elizabeth curled up on the bed and tried to push the image of Joe
and his other woman out of her head.
Why did they have to run into them?
Why did it feel like it kicked her back two months? She was finally feeling like she wasn't so
fragile and the ache in her chest had started to ease.
As if those images weren't enough, her mind played over the night
he'd told her he wanted the divorce.
It was a typical evening as she prepared for bed. Joe had been in the studio all evening
working on material. She just called
him through the intercom and he said he'd be up shortly. She looked up as he
walked in.
"You look exhausted." She looked at him.
"We need to talk, Beth."
"Ok." She finished rubbing lotion on her arms as she
walked over to the loveseat near the window.
Joe had already sat down and he turned to face her.
"I want you to know that I love you."
"I know." Her heartbeat quickened. What was going on? Why did he suddenly look so distant?
"It's just....I don't know. I'm forty-two years old and I'm
well....I'm bored. I miss the way
things were when I was twenty-two." He sighed.
“What are you saying?” Her voice quivered.
“Beth….I….I’ve…” He sighed heavily. “I’ve been havin’ an affair.”
“Who?”
“Angie, our wardrobe coordinator.”
Affair? He’d cheated on
her? Could she forgive him for
this? Did she love him enough to
forgive him?
"How long?"
"A few months now." He choked. As much as he knew what he was doing, he hated to see the tears
rolling down her cheeks. And he knew it
wasn't over yet.
"Why, Joe? Why did you
do this to us?"
"Because I need more than this, Beth! I miss the excitement of the earlier
years."
"You mean you miss the women throwing themselves at your feet
and you being free to take whatever offer looked best to you." She
snipped.
"Yes, I do." He got up and paced. After another few minutes of silence, he
stopped and looked at her. "I've spoken to my solicitor and asked him to
draw up separation papers." He dropped his shoulders. "I want a
divorce."
With those four little words, her life had fallen apart. An evening she thought nothing could surpass
was just beaten out by her seeing them together.
Chapter - 7
Joe lay in bed with Angie cuddled up next to him. His body was sated but his heart just didn't
feel the same way. Why did he suddenly
feel ashamed of himself? This is what
he'd wanted, the freedom to live a little on the wild side again, just like he
was doing. So, if he had what he
wanted, why didn't he feel happy?
Unable to sleep with all these thoughts roving around his head, he
pulled on a pair of pants and walked downstairs. Lighting a cigarette, pouring a drink from the bar, he walked
over to the bay window and looked out over star filled night.
What was he going to do?
Why did it seem this is all he'd wanted until he had it? Of course, it's what he wanted. He had a gorgeous 20 something year old
upstairs in his bed right now. Tomorrow
he could decide that he liked the waitress that served him his lunch and shag
her in the loo if he desired. He'd gotten
what he asked for.
If that was the case, why did it feel like something was missing? Why did it feel like he'd lost a part of
himself? He then realized on top of
that, a part of him still ached over the loss of his marriage.
As he reclined in the chair, he began to doze off. As he slept, his mind drifted back seven
years.......
"What's 'ad you all distracted lately?" Sav asked as he
and Joe sat alone in the studio.
"I've been thinkin' of askin' Beth to marry me." Joe
looked up.
"Well it's about bloody time if you ask me." Sav
chuckled.
"She's pretty great, isn't she?" Joe smiled.
"They don't make too many like 'er." Sav nodded his head.
Joe had met Beth three years before and they had been inseparable
ever since. She was everything he
wanted and needed. Understanding of the
long hours, touring, odd hours, a house full of people with no notice, and most
of all, his fans. She stood next to him
through everything, sometimes silently but always there when he needed her.
He was ready to leave the groupie world behind and settle
down. He wanted a home, a loving wife,
and a family. He wanted what his
parents shared and he wanted it all with her.
No one else would do.
"Mate?" Sav waived his hand in front of Joe's face.
"Sorry."
"So, when you gonna ask 'er?"
"Tonight." Joe jumped up and ran out of the studio.
Joe woke up with a start.
What had made him dream about that particular conversation? Was it just seeing Beth today or was it
seeing her after so much time?
Beth got up the next morning and made her way down to the
kitchen. Paige and Sav were sitting at
the table drinking tea and reading the morning paper.
"Mornin'." Sav looked up and smiled.
"Hey, Rick. How are
you?"
"Doin' good." He stood to hug her. "'Ave a
seat." He pulled a chair out for her.
"Do you want some breakfast?" Paige asked.
"I'm not really hungry." Beth poured a cup of coffee.
"I guess I'll go check on Ty." Sav excused himself.
Once he'd left the room, Paige gave Beth a minute to sip her
coffee.
"Do you wanna talk about it?" She offered gently.
"Not really."
"No one knew, Beth." She touched her hand. "If they
'ad, they'd 'ave said somethin'."
"It wouldn't have mattered if they did." Beth looked up
with no emotion. "She wasn't the reason he left, just part of the new life
he started early."
Chapter - 8
Sav and Phil walked into Joe's house a few days later.
"Joe!" Phil yelled into the empty house. "Joe!"
"Where the bloody 'ell is 'e?"
"Beats me." Phil snipped. "Let's just 'ead to the
studio and get warmed up. Maybe he'll
turn up by the time the other two get 'ere."
"Maybe."
They walked out through the kitchen and down the hall toward
"Joe's Garage". When they
opened the door, it was to an unexpected sight. Joe had a leggy little brunette bent over the soundboard.
"Uh...." Sav's face reddened.
"Excuse us." Phil stammered and they backed out of the
room.
About twenty minutes later, Joe stepped into the kitchen to find
his mates sipping tea.
"Is that 'er?" Sav pointed toward the studio.
"Who?" Phil looked at him.
"Seems Joe's been shaggin' a new bird for about.....oh what is
it now...six months?"
"Six months? But that
would mean....."
"It's none of your bloody business." Joe finally snapped.
"And no, it wasn't 'er."
"What, did she get borin'?" Sav raised his eyebrows.
Joe's head whipped up at Sav's choice of words. Had Beth been telling them about the
divorce? The last he'd heard, she
hadn't talked about it any more than he had.
Beth. Even he couldn't deny
anymore that his mind drifted to her often.
What did that mean?
"You lads go ahead and work.
I 'ave somethin' to take care of." Joe grabbed a bottle of water
and headed for the door.
"What?" Sav and Phil both yelled.
A few minutes later Joe pulled up in front of Sav and Paige's
house. Taking a deep breath, he walked
up to the door and rang the bell. Paige
answered the door and a scowl immediately covered her face.
"You 'ave a lot of nerve."
"'Ello, Paige." He shuffled his feet. "Is Beth still
'ere?"
"I am." Beth spoke from behind Paige.
Paige turned to see her friend standing in the entry hall. She looked composed just as she did the
other morning at breakfast.
"Can we talk?" Joe asked.
Beth didn't say anything, just grabbed her jacket and stepped out
the door beside him.
They walked around the house and down toward the bay in
silence. As they headed along the
water, Joe finally spoke.
"'Ow have you been, Beth?"
"I'm great, Joe." She lied. "I've discovered there
is life after you."
"I don't want to argue." He bit out, stung by her words.
"Then I suggest you say what you came to say." She
glanced at him. "I'm sure you have more interesting things to do."
"Are you sure about the 'ouse?"
"Of course I am."
"But that 'ouse meant so much to you."
"Apparently what has meaning to me doesn't matter
anymore." She choked.
"Beth..." He stopped and grabbed her arm.
"Don't, Joe."
"Even though all this happened, I still care about you."
"Yeah? Well, I didn't
ask you to." She turned and walked
off.
Joe ran after her, catching her against a tall rock. As he stood pinning her in place, he felt
his body's natural reaction to her.
Something he hadn't expected.
"Beth..." He brushed the back of his hand across her
cheek.
Phil looked up as the studio door opened and in walked Angie.
"'Ello, love." He smiled.
"What brings you 'ere?" Rick asked.
"I was looking for Joe.
He told me you guys were working today."
"Ran off 'bout an 'our ago." Sav huffed.
"Oh."
"I think he's pissed cause we walked in on 'im and some bird
when we got 'ere." Phil chuckled.
"Girl? What were
they.....Oh!" She fumed when she
caught their meaning.
"Oh shit." Sav mumbled to himself. "You aren't the
bird he's been seein' for a few months now, are ya?"
"I was!" She turned and stormed upstairs. "That self
centered, egotistical, cheating bastard!" She yelled up the stairs.
Chapter - 9
Beth slowly opened the door and looked around the empty
apartment. She'd found this apartment
just a few short weeks after she and Joe had split. She'd stayed here until the divorce was finally then packed
everything up and headed home. Now, it
was time to take her life back.
"Where do you want to start?" Paige asked.
"You can clean but no lifting for you." Beth spoke as she
opened up the living room curtains.
"I can do a little lifting."
"No need, love." Sav walked in with Phil, carrying the
first set of boxes. "We 'ave plenty of manpower 'ere for that."
"Yeah, manpower!" Phil chuckled.
Beth and Paige rolled their eyes as they went to work. The guys hauled the stuff in from the truck
and the girls worked on getting everything in it's place. By dinnertime, the place looked almost like
she'd never left.
"We're outta 'ere."
Phil stuck his head in the kitchen.
"No!" Beth turned
around. "I've made dinner for
everyone. Kind of a thank you."
"Food?"
“Thanks for helping.” Beth smiled as Phil turned to leave later
that night.
“You’re welcome.” He slipped his jacket on. “I’d never ‘ave left
you if I’d 'ave been 'im."
"Phil...."
"No." He put a
hand up to stop her. "Joe's one of me best mates but he screwed up,
Beth. He 'ad somethin' everyone of us
dreams of findin'." He looked her
square in the eye. "A wonderful
woman who understands. That's 'ard to
find." He kissed her cheek. "G'night, love."
Across Dublin, Joe sat in his recliner surveying the damage Angie
had done before she left. Her note
informed him that she'd learned of his extra curricular activities from his
band mates.
Who cared? So she was
gone. He was more upset over his
trashed house than he was about her being gone. It wasn't like he wasn't out doing the same thing when she'd
found out.
But it wasn't the same thing.
He'd been with Beth. Nothing
with Beth had ever been the same as it was with other women. Beth was better than that.
Yet, you treated her the worst.
You cheated and walked out on the very thing you'd sought after. Everything your heart still desires. All the easy women, careless adventures, and
meaningless flings aren't going to fill t he void that was left when you walked
out.
Furthermore, when you finally pull your head out of your arse,
you'll have to all but beg Beth to forgive you and take you back.
"I'm loosin' me bloody mind!" He growled. Standing up,
he walked to the bar and poured himself a drink. He stared at the phone for a moment before picking it up and
dialing Sav's number.
"Talk to me." Sav answered.
"You sound like me." Joe chuckled.
"Better stop that then." Sav laughed. "What's
up?"
"Is Beth around?"
"No. Moved into 'er
own place today."
"Really?"
"Yeah. The same litt'l
apartment she 'ad before." Sav offered freely.
"Phone number?"
"Not yet. Next
week."
"Cell?"
"Yeah, but Paige won't give me the number."
"I see. Thanks, mate." Joe hung up and grabbed his jacket.
Chapter - 10
Beth changed into her tank top and cotton-sleeping pants, washed
her face, and made herself a cup of tea before settling down on the couch to
enjoy a late movie. She was just about
to press play when there was a knock on the door.
Without thinking, she walked over and opened the door. The second she saw his face, she wished
she'd grabbed her robe.
"Happy to see me?" He smirked, noticing her nipples
straining against her top.
"Hardly." She crossed her arms.
"May I please come in?"
"I guess." She stepped back to let him in. After closing the door, she led him over to
the couch. "What are you doing here?"
"Why the attitude, Beth?"
"I'm sorry, did the great Joe Elliott want me to fall at his
feet?" She snapped.
"What the 'ell did I do?"
"What did you do?" She painfully laughed.
Maybe it was the stress of starting over in Dublin. Maybe it was being back here in the
apartment. On the other hand, maybe it
was that mind-blowing kiss he’d given her by the rock. Or the fact that she let him affect her that
way.
On the other hand, maybe it was simply she'd never vented all the
hurt he'd caused her. Well, now she
was.
"Beth?"
"You walked out on me!
That was, after you cheated. You
took everything that meant something to me and showed me how simple it was to throw
away. Without speaking the words, you
told me that I was nothing to you. That
the years we spent together, the promises you made, meant nothing!"
"Beth..." His voice cracked as tears filled his eyes.
"I don't know whether to hate you or admit that I still love
you." She cried.
Tears spilled down Joe's cheeks.
Her emotions weren't masked and the extent of the pain he'd caused her
shown clearly in her eyes, her voice, her actions. He'd done this to her.
"Beth....dear God, baby..." He stood and tried to wrap
his arms around her.
"Don't touch me!" She screamed and stepped back.
"Beth..." He reached for her again, pulling her into his
arms.
He held her that way while she cried. After a few minutes, he felt her tears subside and pulled back to
look at her. She was such a beautiful
creature and after everything, she admitted she still loved him. Just where did her strength end? And did he even deserve to know?
Words seemed to have left him for he didn't have a clue what to
say. Then again, maybe words weren't
what they needed. Perhaps it was time
to show her. With that thought, he
brought his lips down and captured hers.
She resisted only a second or two before the need to be comforted
overcame her. Who cared if it was right
or wrong? Who cared if she would only
feel worse tomorrow? Right now, she
needed comfort. And she needed it the
way only he'd ever been able to offer.
She broke away from the kiss.
Seeing the lust filling his eyes, she turned and walked toward the
bedroom waiting for him to follow.
Chapter – 11
Joe’s eyes never left her body as she walked down the hall. He knew where she was heading and his body
reacted immediately to her. God, how
long had it been since he’d been with her?
Damn near a year.
Following her down the hallway, his body working on it’s own
accord, he stopped just inside the bedroom.
There she was standing in a pair of lacy black thongs and nothing
else. His heart nearly stopped at the
sight of her.
Don’t do it! She deserves
better than this. Look at her
eyes. They’re red and puffy from the
emotions she spent. Emotions that are a
result of the pain you inflicted.
“Beth.” Joe stepped toward her. “Here, cover up.” He grabbed her robe and handed it to her.
Beth trembled as tears pooled in her eyes again. “I’m sorry, I
forgot.” She pulled her robe around her
with shaky hands.
“Don’t think that.” Joe choked. “That’s not why I said that.”
“Sure.” She swiped at the
tears on her cheek.
Do something you bloody idiot!
Look at her. What do you
see? Well? Damn you’re slow sometimes.
You see the thing that matters most.
After everything you’ve put her through, she still loves you. Still wants to be with you. You thought you needed what you had twenty
years ago but that wasn’t what you needed at all. You needed what you already had.
Can’t you see that?
“Elizabeth…” He pulled her into his arms. “Shh.” He stroked her hair as she cried again.
“Let go of me.” She cried.
“No.” He pulled her closer.
“Dear, God, Beth I’m sorry.” He cried.
As if everything hit him, all at once Joe finally realized the
extent of his actions. In his “need” to
overcome a mid life crisis, he pushed away and hurt the one person he needed
most. His love, his life, his reason,
his rock.
He’d done the very things she’d said he done. He tossed her to the side as if she hadn’t
meant a thing to him. Why? How?
Feeling her body slowly slump against his frame, he picked her up
and carried her to the bed. Laying her
down, he folded her frame into his and snuggled against her. For the first time in months, something felt
right. Entirely right. How could he have ever given this up?
“I never meant to ‘urt you.”
“Then why?” She pleaded.
“Tell me how you could walk away like you did while I’m still struggling to
cope.”
“Because you’re a better person than I am. I ‘ad to loose you before I realized what I
‘ad was what I’d needed all along.”
“What are you saying? Why
are you saying it?” She jumped up. She suddenly needed space.
“I’m sayin’…..I’m….Ah, ‘ell, I don’t know what I’m sayin’.” He got
up and ran a hand through his hair.
“Then why say it?”
“Will words even matter?”
“No.” She looked him square
in the eye. “Because I don’t trust you anymore.”
Chapter – 12
That night Joe drove the long way home. He had waited until Beth had finally gone to sleep before leaving
but he found himself wide-awake replaying the events.
She’d shown him more hurt this evening than he’d known he’d
inflicted. Or had he and he’d refused
to see it in his own selfish quest to regain his youth?
What was he going to do? He
felt the need to prove to her his revelation with more than just words. But he knew Beth. She was going to need the words as much as the actions. And another thought was, would the rest of
his life be enough time to make it up to her?
“Bloody fool.” He mumbled
to himself. “Couldn’t even realize what you ‘ad right before your eyes.” He turned down his drive and headed up to
the house. “Really, it wasn’t like
those were the reasons you’d wanted to marry ‘er in the first place.”
Letting himself into the house, he headed straight for the bedroom
and the closet. There, he pulled out
the box where he’d carefully stored away the photos of him and Beth. Carrying them to the bed, he sat down and
slowly began reliving their life together through the pictures.
As the night wore on, one thing he noticed from picture to picture
was the light in Beth’s eyes, a result of her happiness. A light that had long since
extinguished. He made a vow then and
there, one he would not break this time, that he would return that light to her
eyes. Show her all the happiness she
deserved.
The next morning, Beth woke up cradling the pillow close to her
body. Her eyes burned as a fresh set of
tears formed at the reminder of Joe’s refusal last night. What had she been thinking? He’d let her know once that she was boring
to him, why did she have to set herself up to feel it from him again?
Burrowing down under the covers, she tried to hide from the
world. The last thing she wanted to do
was to get out of bed and face anyone today.
If she didn’t face anyone, she didn’t have to worry over explaining her
mood. And most of all she didn’t have
to worry about running into Joe.
Joe had just stepped out of the shower when the phone began to
ring.
“Yeah?”
“Paige is makin’ me call to remind everyone of the rehearsal
tonight.” Sav sighed.
“Mornin’ to you too!” Joe chuckled.
“Yeah, well, I figured Phil would ‘ave been the only one awake at
this ‘our.” Sav laughed.
“Didn’t sleep well last night.” Joe sighed. “I ‘ad a bit on me
mind.”
“What are you up to? With
Beth I mean.”
“Comin’ to my senses, I think.” Joe pulled on his jeans.
“And what is ‘er reaction to this?” Sav probed.
“I said I was comin to my senses not that she’d forgiven me.” Joe huffed. “I ‘ave a lot of makin’ up to
do. A lot of provin’ myself.”
“I wish you luck ‘cause you’re goin’ to need it.”
“Thanks.” He grabbed a
shirt from the closet. “I’ll see ya t’night.”
Chapter – 13
Beth checked her makeup one last time as the doorbell rang. Nobody should be able to tell that anything
was bothering her. The doorbell rang
again. She smoothed out her black skirt
and red sweater, with approval.
“Coming!” She yelled as she
walked toward the door. Phil had
offered to pick her up and take her to the rehearsal dinner. “I’m almost
ready…” She stopped when she realized
it wasn’t Phil on the other side.
“Anita’s plane was late.” Joe smiled.
“And Phil sent you?” She
raised her eyebrows.
“I offered.” He smiled
meekly. “You look beautiful by the way.”
“Thank you.” She stepped back to grab her coat.
Joe stepped inside and took the coat from her, helping her into it. His hands lingered on her shoulders for a
few moments longer than needed but his mind and his body were in battle with
each other. He wanted to forget the
world outside, take her back to the bedroom, and start showing her how much he
wanted and needed her.
His brain on the other hand, was telling him to take it slow. That she was still fragile and untrusting of
him. How in the world was he going to make
it through this evening with her looking the way she did and him wanting her as
much as he did?
Once they arrived, all eyes startlingly turned to them. No one had expected them to show up
together. In fact, they’d worried if
they’d be able to be in the same room together.
“You’re ‘ere!” Paige ran
over to her.
“Of course I’m here.” Beth
hugged her. “I told you I wouldn’t miss this.”
“I know but….” Paige’s eyes diverted to Joe, who was walking up
behind her.
“Let me take your coat, love.” He whispered in Beth’s ear.
She slipped out of her coat and watched Joe walk across the room to
hang it up with his own.
“Well?” Paige questioned.
“Phil was going to pick me up but Anita’s plane was running
late. Joe offered to do it for him.”
“And you agreed to that?” Paige was surprised.
“I didn’t have much choice.
I didn’t know until he showed up at my door.”
The rehearsal went over smoothly with Joe’s eyes constantly on
Beth. Tomorrow, they would watch two of
their best friends commit themselves to each other for life. How would she handle it? Would she be able to listen to them say
their vows with him standing opposite her and knowing that he’d broken their
own? Could he handle it?
“I’m ready to go home.” Beth walked up to Joe.
He stared at her for a moment.
“Please, I can’t handle any more of this right now.” She tried
pushing back the tears.
“I’ll get our coats.” He
hurried off. He retrieved their coats,
said a few quick goodbyes for them, and then escorted her out the door to his
car.
Chapter – 14
Joe insisted on seeing her inside her apartment. He had watched her battle her emotions all
the way home and he cursed himself again.
“Do you want me to make you some tea?” He offered.
“No.” She rubbed her temples. “Look, Joe, thanks for the ride but
there’s no need for you to stay.”
“I think there is.” He countered while grabbing her hand and
leading her to the couch. “I wanna talk.”
“Joe…”
“Please, Beth.”
“Fine.” She huffed and sat down.
Joe took a moment to calm his racing heart and collect his
thoughts. He had to choose his words
carefully or he may blow any chance he had right here and now.
“I’ve been doin’ a lot of soul searchin’ lately.” He started. “I’ve
realized that I’ve fucked up in the worst way.”
Beth stared at him blankly.
Why was he telling her? And why
did she feel herself hanging on every word he said? He couldn’t possible be talking about them. She wouldn’t let herself even begin to
believe that.
“I thought I needed to relive my younger years. I thought I needed all the women throwing
themselves at me.” He watched her face for any reaction. She just stared at him. He brushed a few strands of hair away from
her face and added… “What I found is that….well,….I’d already ‘ad what I’d been
searchin’ for.”
Beth shook her head and tried to make sense of what he was saying.
“I don’t get it.”
“All those years I’d been searchin’ for you.” He swiped at a tear
rolling down his cheek. “The one person that understood. The one person that loved me beyond all the
monetary things.” He ran a finger down her jawbone. “I’d found all that in
you.”
“Joe…”
“I’ve ‘urt you and I know that.
All I’m askin’ is that you give me the chance to prove myself. To not only tell you but to show you that I
want nothin’ else in this world but what we ‘ad.”
Beth watched the emotions play across his face. He was serious. Somewhere in the last eight months, he’d come to realize that she
was in fact what he’d wanted. The only
problem was, things couldn’t be the same.
Try as they might, they’d never get it back.
“Things can’t ever be the way they were.” She sighed. “Not after
what happened.” She was painfully
honest.
“No they won’t but…why can’t we work through it and build somethin’
new then?”
“And what happens the next time you get bored with me?” She jumped off the couch, anger flashing in
her eyes.
“Why do you keep thinkin’ that I was bored?”
“Because you told me!” She wrapped her arms around herself. “The
night you told me about Angie and the divorce.” She cried.
Joe choked on his own words.
His mind flew back to that night in their bedroom and to the words he’d
told her. Dear God, he’d actually said
that.
“I’m sorry.” He jumped up and stepped toward her. “Beth, I didn’t
exactly mean I was bored with you…”
“Then what did you mean, Joe?
Huh?”
“I don’t know.” He hung his head.
“Do you know what it feels like to know that I failed you?”
“Oh baby…” He pulled her into his arms. “You never ever failed me.”
He kissed the top of her head. “I’m the one that failed you. In more ways than one.”
Chapter – 15
“Congratulations.” Beth hugged Paige at the reception.
“Thank you.” Paige sniffed. “For everythin’. Especially being ‘ere.”
“Regardless of what I may have said, I wouldn’t have missed it for
anyone.”
“May I steal my bride away?” Sav walked up to them.
“If you must.” Beth hugged him as well. “Take good care of her.”
“Always.” Sav whispered in return.
As the bride and groom walked away, Joe made his own way to Beth’s
side.
“Champagne?” He dangled a glass in front of her.
“Thanks.”
“It was a beautiful ceremony.”
“Yes it was. Paige has been
planning this day for some time. I’m
glad it went off without a hitch.”
“Unlike ours?” He chuckled.
“Oh God, don’t remind me.” She chuckled.
Their wedding day had been almost perfect. Save the fact that Joe and the others showed
up an hour late, half pissed drunk, and completely missed the pictures before
the wedding.
“The devil made me do it.” Joe whispered against her cheek.
“Yeah right.” She rolled her eyes.
“Ok, so it was Sav’s idea.
Thought I needed to enjoy my last few moments as a free man.”
“I’m sure he didn’t have to twist your arm that hard.” She sipped
her champagne.
Sav held Paige close as they danced. However, he noticed his new wife’s eyes kept diverting to Joe and
Beth.
“Honey….”
“I’m sorry.” She laid her head against his shoulder. “I just don’t
want ‘im to hurt ‘er again.”
“I really don’t think ‘e wants to do that either.” He kissed her
forehead. “He’s realized that he let the best thing ‘e ‘ad slip away from
him. And ‘e knows he’s got a lot of
makin’ up to do.”
“Really?”
“I ‘eard it with me own two ears.” He pulled her tight against his
body. “Now, let’s not worry about them.
Today you’re mine and I plan to give you plenty to think about besides
them.” He growled.
The night wore on and Joe did his best to use the atmosphere to his
advantage. He knew his ex-wife was a
hopeless romantic and that the wedding would soften her heart.
After the bride and groom left, the others followed in short
succession. Beth and Joe helped the
others clean up before taking off themselves.
They arrived back at Beth’s apartment around 2 a.m.
“Thanks for the ride.”
“Do you want me to stay for a bit?” Joe offered.
“Actually, I just really want to be alone right now.” She rubbed
the back of her neck.
“Beth…”
“Please, Joe. I just don’t
feel like having anyone around.”
“Very well.” He leaned down and kissed her cheek. “Sleep tight.”
“Goodnight.” She closed and locked the door behind him.
Chapter – 16
The next few months were filled with Joe and Beth spending a little
time each week with each other. Joe
still wanted to show her as much as possible that he knew he’d been a jerk,
even worse. The words had come as well
and slowly but surely, he felt Beth coming around. Today they were going to the Center and he planned to spoil her
as much as he could.
They arrived and had an enjoyable lunch at a small café before
hitting the shops.
“Can we stop in here?” Beth pointed to a small boutique.
“Why don’t you go ahead?
I’m goin’ to step into the music store.” He pointed across the street.
“I’ll meet you over there.”
She smiled.
Joe walked across the street and into the store. Instantly he was drawn to a display of David
Bowie. As he stood gazing, a tall,
leggy, and beautiful blonde stopped by his side.
“’Ello, handsome.” She
purred.
Joe’s eyes diverted to her without turning his head. As he caught sight of her, his eyes
naturally scanned her entire body before returning to her face. “’Ello.” He smiled.
“A Bowie fan?”
“You got that bloody right.” He chuckled.
“So am I.” She ran a long fingernail down his sleeve-covered arm.
Beth walked out of the small boutique and started across the
street. She knew from experience that
Joe would still be in the music store even though the man didn’t really need
any more cds.
She smiled at the warm feeling that started to spread throughout
her body again whenever she thought of him.
These past few months he’d been trying so hard in taking things slow and
giving her time to trust him again. And
time is exactly what it was going to take.
She walked into the store and after a quick scan of faces, she found Joe
in the corner, Bowie display, blonde and all.
The blonde laughed at something Joe had said and leaned closer to
him.
“I ‘ope I don’t sound forward but…..would you care to ‘ave a drink
with me?” She again ran a fingernail down his arm.
Joe could feel the goose bumps come alive all over his body and he
closed his eyes. But, it wasn’t this
little vixen next to him that he was seeing.
It was Beth.
“I can’t.” He growled.
“Sure you can.”
“No, I can’t.” He removed her hand from his arm. Her eyes zeroed in on his. “There’s someone that wouldn’t understand
and I’ve ‘urt ‘er too much already.”
Beth’s breath caught in her throat as she watched and
listened. Had her ears heard him
right? He was turning her down and he
was doing it for her. Her heart swelled
just a bit at the thought.
“Excuse me.” Joe nodded to the blonde as he spotted Beth. His heart pounded as he walked toward
her. The scene had to look bad and he
could only hope that she’d overheard him.
“Beth….”
“Shh.” She placed a finger over his lips. “There’s nothing for you
to explain.” She grabbed his arm and
they continued to shop.
Joe was amazed, if that could even describe the feeling he felt
inside himself. He knew that Beth had
heard him. He knew that it looked good
for him. However, the best part of all
was, it felt good. Temptation had
presented itself and all he could think about was Beth. That was great.
Chapter – 17
Joe smiled at the attendant as he grabbed the airline tickets and
turned to head out of the agency. He
decided that things were going well enough between him and Beth that he’d
surprise her with a trip to a small cottage in Scotland for Christmas.
Beth loved the snow and the whole thought of a private cottage felt
like the perfect romantic getaway for them.
“Hello?” Beth answered as she dried her hair.
“Pack your bags.” Joe smiled as he drove toward his house.
“Excuse me?”
“I said, pack your bags.” He chuckled. “I’m taking you away for a
few days.”
“Joe…”
“Please, Beth.” He pleaded, suddenly feeling as though he may have
overstepped. “No expectations save one.
You relax and enjoy the holiday.”
“Where?” She sighed.
“It’s a surprise but I guarantee you’ll love it.”
“When do I need to be ready?” She unwillingly gave in.
“I’m heading to get my bags now.
Say about an hour?”
“Thanks for the warning.”
“See ya.” He chuckled as he hung up.
True to his word, Joe was there an hour later and picked her
up. Beth seemed even more surprised
when they arrived at the airport and boarded a plane for Scotland.
After arriving, Joe collected their luggage and secured their
rental car. Before they both knew it,
they had arrived at a small cabin.
“Joe…” Beth gasped as she stepped out. “Is this where we’re
staying?”
“Do you like it?” He asked timidly.
“It’s beautiful.” She ran for the porch and turned to wait for him
to unlock the door.
“I wanted it to be special.” He stopped next to her. “You deserve
it.”
“Thank you.” She leaned up and kissed him gently on the lips.
Joe closed his eyes and relished the moment. Sure, he’d kissed her more than once since
he’d come to his senses but this was the first time she had offered. Every other time had been when he initiated
it and it was heart warming that she had.
Chapter – 18
Beth closed her eyes and sighed as the hot spray from the shower
slid over her body. The cabin was
beautiful, the view was beautiful, the idea of spending Christmas here was
beautiful, but being here with Joe was scary.
Things had been going so well for them lately and he’d been very
patient but, she knew Joe. She knew
that his limitations were being stretched.
The man simple loved sex.
Though, she knew he’d never force her, was he planning on stressing
the physical part of their relationship?
Did he want more than she was ready to give? But she just couldn’t help but remember that he’d been so patient
to this point.
She rubbed her hands over her face and then rinsed her hair. All this worrying and thinking was giving
her a headache. She turned off the water
and reached for her towel. She’d just
play it by ear and deal with it then.
What more could she do?
When she’d finished, she walked downstairs to find that Joe had a
fire lit and candles burning around the living room. Dinner was romantically set up in front of the fire and the
coffee table set for two.
Her heart skipped a beat before it began a low pounding inside her
chest. She slowly walked over and sat
by the table.
Joe watched as she walked down the stairs and toward the table and
him. He’d seen her hesitation and his
pulse began pounding in his ears. He
wanted this trip to be perfect, a time for them to reconnect. Had he pushed a little too far?
He knew gaining back her trust would be hard won battle. He knew that he needed to be careful or else
he’d loose his chance and worse yet, break her fragile heart again. Something he wasn’t willing to do. But he never imagined how scary it all would
be. Not sure when to make a move and
when not to. When to progress to
another level or wait. How was he going
to know? Would she tell him or did he
have to figure it out for himself?
Chapter – 19
Dinner wasn’t as bad as Beth was expecting. Joe kept the conversation casual and
light. When they finished, he cleared
the dishes and cleaned up the kitchen as Beth relaxed.
“More wine?”
“Thanks.” She sighed contently as he refilled her glass.
He refilled his own glass before settling down beside her.
“I thought, if you’d like…we could go down to that little town down
the road tomorrow.” He looked over at her. “Buy some decorations, food, and
anythin’ else we may need.”
“I think that’s a good idea.” She smiled.
Joe could still sense she was uneasy. What could he do to relax her?
What would take this tension between them away?
“How about a movie?”
“You brought movies?” She raised her eyebrows. “Hard Core Pinups or
Rita Does Rock n’ Roll?”
“Beth……” He chuckled.
Something finally brought out her teasing nature. She’d always given him a hard time over his
movie selection.
“What?” She laughed. “You’re selection of movies never was as vast
as your CDs.”
“Funny.” He flicked the end of her nose. “But no. I noticed there were a few movies in the
cabinet.” He pointed to the one next to the TV.
“Oh.”
They looked through the small collection and agreed on a comedy,
American Wedding. They sipped more wine
as they watched the movie. At the end,
Joe looked over and noticed Beth had fallen asleep.
This is what she’d been afraid of.
The sleeping arrangements. He
knew it. He sighed heavily then picked
her up and carried her upstairs. He
laid her down in one of the bedrooms, removing her shoes. He then pulled her jeans and shirt off
before covering her with the blanket.
He kissed her forehead and marched out and down the hall to his own
room. It was going to be a long night.
Chapter – 20
A long night indeed. Joe tossed and turned for
hours before he threw back the covers and patted into the bathroom. His mind
kept wondering down the hall to the bedroom where Beth was sleeping. This was
the first night they’d stayed in the same house together since their divorce.
It was the first time they’d stayed underneath the same roof and not slept in
the same bed.
His body was humming with need. He admitted to
the fact that he loved sex and it had been a long time since he’d had
it. Months. Months! He wanted Beth and not just to satisfy his physical
need. He wanted the tenderness they used to share. The slow building of need
and want brought about by the bond they shared.
A bond, he noted, that he’d severed. She wasn’t
ready for that and he wasn’t willing to push her. But, his abstinence was becoming
a painful problem.
“Bloody ‘ell. I feel like a damn teenager
again.” He mumbled as he turned on the shower. Taking care of the problem
himself was the only thing he knew to do. How long would this suffice him
though?
Beth woke up to the sound of the shower being
turned on. She looked over at the clock and noticed it was early morning. Too
early for Joe to be up. That’s when she realized she was in bed, her bra and
panties still on. She turned her head to the other side of the bed and noticed
it hadn’t been slept in.
Grabbing her robe, she threw it on and tied as
she walked down the hall. She found the bedroom that Joe had attempted to sleep
in, the covers of the bed tangled and thrown about. She then stepped toward the
bathroom. Maybe something was wrong.
As she was about to knock, she heard Joe grunt.
She stopped and listened, deciding to just peek in on him. Opening the door,
she spotted his form through the shower doors. Her breath caught in her throat
at the sight of him. The man did have an extraordinary body. He moaned, causing
her to jump slightly, and she noticed……
“Ooh!” She gasped and covered her mouth.
“Beth?” Joe spun around.
“I’m sorry.” She turned away. “I heard….I just
thought……”
“I’ll be out in a minute.” He sighed.
Beth shook her head and walked out. Why did she have to walk in there? Why
didn’t she just accept the fact that he’d gotten up early and was taking a
shower? Ok, so he obviously wasn’t just taking a shower….he was taking care
of…..
“Beth?” Joe stepped out with the towel wrapped
around his waist.
“I’m sorry. I should have knocked.”
“I should ‘ave locked the door.” He smiled.
Chapter – 21
The rest of their trip was filled with Joe
trying his best to romance Beth again. No pressure was put on the physical part
of their relationship and there were no repeats of the shower incident. He’d
made sure to lock the door from that morning on. When they returned to Dublin,
things were looking the best they had been and Joe couldn’t be happier about
that.
He dropped Beth off at her apartment and
promised to pick her up in a few hours for the New Years party they’d been
invited to. The New Year was about to turn over and he could only hope that
would spark a new turn in their relationship.
As promised, Beth was ready and waiting when Joe
arrived that night. She decided on a form fitting black dress with spaghetti
straps and a slit up the side to her mid thigh.
“You look amazin’.” Joe kissed her cheek.
“Thanks.” She smiled as he helped her into her
coat.
They arrived at the party and Beth immediately
begun to mingle with friends she hadn’t seen in several months. Joe, of course,
made his way to the bar and then joined Phil, Sav, and a few other friends.
“So?” Sav raised his eyebrows.
“What?” Joe smiled.
“How did it go?”
“Great.”
“Any hot steamy sex to tell us about?” Phil
wiggled his eyebrows.
“No.” Joe sighed. “Even if there was, I wouldn’t
divulge the details to you wankers.”
“How long you been without now?”
“Do we ‘ave to talk about my sex life?”
“We would if you ‘ad one.” Rick laughed as he
joined them.
“Funny.” Joe smirked and drank down half his
glass.
As the night progressed, Joe was thankful that
he’d worn his clothes in usual fashion. His shirt long and untucked. It was
serving to conceal his raging hard on for the last hour.
He and Beth had danced, kissed, flirted,
teased……to a point he was ready to explode.
“I’m goin’ to grab some fresh air.” He whispered
in Beth’s ear.
“Is everything alright?”
“Fine.” He kissed her cheek. “I’m just goin’ to
cool down for a bit.”
“Oh.” Her cheeks slightly blushed.
Joe walked outside and leaned against the rail
of the balcony. The air was nippy and he was thankful as it served as his only
reprieve. He sipped his drink as he thought about the interaction between him
and Beth throughout the night. Was she ready? Was she waiting on him to take it
to the next level? He didn’t know and as bad as he wanted to, he couldn’t bring
himself to do it. He wanted it to be her call.
He sighed as he realized that she would never
take that step on her own. She’d believed that he’d been bored with her,
shredding her self-confidence about their sex life. He’d have to be the one to
initiate it. He’d have to show her that he wanted her, that he desired her.
“What is a hot commodity like Joe Elliott doin’
out on the balcony on his own?”
Joe turned at the sound of the sultry voice and
found a beautiful red head standing behind him.
“Just catchin’ a bit of fresh air.” He noticed
the hefty amount of cleavage shown.
“I see.” She stepped closer. “Are you sure
that’s all?”
Joe raised his eyebrows as he watched and
considered her question. He’d seen that look before on a woman’s face.
Thousands of groupies had given him the same look over the years. His erection
throbbed in anticipation of what she silently offering.
He closed his eyes and moaned, trying to fight
off the temptation.
As he did, she pushed him into the corner, out
of the view of the window. Still he didn’t move to stop her. She smiled,
pulling a chair over in front of him. Next, she ran her hands under his shirt,
over the bulge in his pants before reaching the button at the waist. As she
unbuttoned and unzipped his pants, she looked up to see his eyes were still
closed and he still wasn’t trying to stop her.
“That’s quite a problem you have there.” She
sang as Joe only moaned.
Chapter – 22
Paige and Beth were refilling their glasses when
Sav joined them.
“How you feelin’?” Sav kissed Paige’s cheek.
“Fine.”
“We can head out before midnight if you’re
tired.” He rubbed his hand up and down her back.
“I know.” She returned his smile. “But, the
baby’s bein’ quiet this evenin’ and I want to stay.”
“Just let me know.” He turned to Beth. “So,
where did Joe run off to?”
“Outside. It appears he has too much blood
running to the wrong head.” She giggled.
“I see.” He laughed. “Maybe I should take ‘im
out a cup of ice?”
“Rick!” Paige laughed.
Outside, Joe remained plastered to the wall,
eyes closed. The need for release, given by something other than his own hand,
was strong. What this little vixen was offering, his body desperately wanted.
His hands moved down to her shoulders, one
moving up to grab a hand full of hair. She smiled, waiting for him to pull her
to him.
Beth…..Beth…..Beth…..Beth had brought about this
state and Beth was the only one he truly wanted to relieve it. A picture
flashed through his mind of her tormented eyes. Tears falling down her cheeks……
“I think I’ll go and find Joe.” Beth smiled
before turning and heading for the balcony doors.
“Sweetie.” Paige stopped her. “Excuse us, Rick.”
She led her to a quiet corner. “I know it’s a personal question, and tell me to
just quit bein’ nosey if I am…..but you and Joe….are you….I mean ‘ave you…..”
Beth sighed and sipped her drink. “No.”
“But?”
“I want him…..and I know that he’s…..well…..”
“Takin’ matters into ‘is own hands?”
“Yeah.” She closed her eyes. “I just don’t know
if he wants me or if it’s the fact that he hasn’t had sex in the last
couple of months.”
“I know he hurt you and I for one ‘ave been
furious with ‘im for it. But, I think he really wants you Beth and I think ‘is
actions really show that.” She patted her hand and walked away.
Beth turned and headed for the balcony doors
again. Paige’s words echoing in her mind.
Joe gritted his teeth and tightened his grip on
her hair. His heart was pounding inside his chest and the feeling of a pair of
eyes boring into him consumed him. He opened his eyes and locked with those he
felt.
Chapter – 23
Joe broke eye contact and turned his eyes down.
“Stop.” He pulled her back with the hand full of hair. “I can’t do this.”
“What?”
“No offense, love, but you’re not what I’m
lookin’ for.” He reached for the zipper of his pants.
Phil met Beth just inside the balcony doors.
“Is Joe out there?” She pointed outside.
Phil glanced back to where he’d spotted Joe.
Joe’s eyes once again met his. “Didn’t see ‘im, love.”
“Oh.” She turned and scanned the room. “Maybe he
walked in already.”
“Must ‘ave.”
“Something wrong, Phil?” She frowned.
“Nah.” He smiled. “Just wishin’ I could find a
quiet spot to pull Anita off to.” He lied.
“Seems that’s on everyone’s mind tonight.”
Joe listened as Phil kept Beth distracted until
he could pull himself together. What was he doing? Was one little blowjob worth
ruining all he’d worked for the last couple of months? No, nothing was worth shattering
her fragile heart. He wanted her and only her.
He zipped and buttoned his pants, pulled himself
together, and snuck inside another door. As he came walking up the side of the
room, Beth spotted him and smiled. He nervously returned it as he checked his
watch. It was five minutes to midnight so he grabbed a couple of fresh glasses
and made his way toward Beth.
“Thank you.” She took the glass from him.
“Anythin’ for you, love.” He kissed her cheek.
“Everythin’ under control now?” Phil raised his
eyebrows.
“Totally.” Joe sipped his drink.
“Then I better find my wife before the
countdown.” He kissed Beth’s cheek and walked off.
Joe turned and pulled Beth into his arms. Damn,
was she gorgeous tonight and what he wouldn’t give for them to leave this party
after ringing in the New Year.
Beth shivered at the way Joe was looking at her.
The intensity of his gaze fanned a fire deep inside.
“Have I told you ‘ow beautiful you look
tonight?” He brushed his fingers across her cheek.
“A time or two.” She smiled.
“I ‘ave to be the envy of every man ‘ere.”
“I wouldn’t go that far.” She blushed.
“I would.” He brushed his lips across hers.
Reality broke through moments later as the
countdown began.
“Ten…nine….eight….seven…..” The crowd counted
down. Beth on the other hand was to focused on Joe to hear them.
“Five….four….three…two….one…..Happy New Year,
Elizabeth.” He kissed her again.
Chapter – 24
Joe unlocked the door and led them into Beth’s
apartment. He flipped on the lamp as
she shed her coat and threw it over the chair.
His mind was still reeling from the night.
“You have been so patient with me…” Beth draped
her arms around his neck.
“Beth…”
“I can’t tell you what that means to me.”
“If I was such a saint…” He looked into her
eyes. “I wouldn’t ‘ave reason to be so patient.”
“Shh.” She brought her lips up to meet his.
Joe’s mind battled over his actions. He didn’t deserve this. Not after what he’d done. Not after what he’d almost done. Would he have stopped that woman had Phil
not caught him? His mind had been
willing her to stop with thoughts of Beth but his body had fought to remain in
control.
Beth gave into the sensations Joe’s touch was
causing as Paige’s words echoed through her mind. Was it time? Could she
bear to put herself out there and face the rejection he might give her? And if he didn’t, could she open her heart
to the possibility of a happiness she longed to have?
“You’re givin’ me a raging hard on again, love.”
Joe broke the kiss and leaned his forehead against hers.
“Do you want me, Joe?” She choked out the words
then held her breath.
“Oh God, yes.” He pulled her tighter against
him. “I want all of you, Beth. I want
to worship ever inch of your beautiful body.
But most of all, I want to chance to do that forever.” He noticed her
lip begin to tremble as tears flooded her eyes. “I don’t want to rush
anythin’. I want you to be sure that
you’re ready.” He brushed his lips across hers. “It’s your call.”
Tears rolled down Beth’s cheeks as her heart
pounded inside her chest. Standing
before her was the man she’d fell in love with. The sweet, gentle side of him that she’d fell so hard for. And he wanted her.
Grabbing his hand, she turned and led him down
the hall to her bedroom. This felt
right to her and it was time to take that chance. He’d been trying to hard to mend their severed relationship. It was time she’d took a step ahead as well.
Chapter – 25
As they entered the bedroom, Joe’s hands were
trembling as bad as Beth’s. He left her
standing beside the bed as he walked over and opened the curtains, allowing the
light of a full moon to filter through the room. Next, he turned down the bed, throwing the sheets to the
footboard. As he returned to her, he
unbuttoned his shirt and slid it down his arms.
Joe’s heart was pounding inside his chest as ran
his eyes over her body. His mind was
running just as fast and he tried to calm his body down. It was important to take this slow. He wanted to make her feel as special as she
was. To satisfy her in all ways not
just the physical.
“If at any point this is more than you want,
tell me. I’ll stop.” He whispered as he
ran a finger across her collarbone. She
nodded her head as she closed her eyes.
Beth felt herself trembling as she absorbed all
the emotions running through her. She
was scared……and excited…….reluctant…..and eager, all at the same time. She wanted him, no point in lying, but this
was the toughest hurdle she had left to cross.
Slowly, he reached around and unzipped her
dress. He slid his hands up to her
shoulders, catching the edge of the dress and pulled it down her body. He followed with her undergarments before
easing her onto the bed. Before he
followed, he removed the rest of his own clothing.
Starting at her ankles, he caressed, kissed, and
massaged his way up her body. He kissed
his way across her stomach as she wove her fingers through his hair. He paid special attention to her breasts,
kneading and suckling till he had her moaning in pleasure.
“Joe…”
“I love you, Beth.” He kissed her chin, up her
jaw till he reached her ear. “I really do.”
She choked back a sob as tears slid down her
cheeks. Joe immediately stopped and
looked into her eyes.
“Are you ok?” He swiped at the tears. She shook her head. “Then what is it?”
“I love you, too.” She cried. “I don’t think I
ever stopped.”
Her hand slid down his body to find that rock
hard erection. Joe closed his eyes and
groaned, drawing in deep breaths to keep himself from exploding with a single
touch.
“Please, Joe.” She guided him toward her.
Joe positioned himself over her and slowly and
gently slid into her.
It felt better than anything had in his
life. Then, he began to move. Bringing them both to the heights of
pleasure before they came crashing back down.
Chapter – 26
The next day, after eating lunch, Joe talked
Beth into coming to the house. He could
tell she was unsure about being there but he wanted to spoil her today. He’d planned on taking her shopping, and
then he’d made reservations for dinner at her favorite restaurant.
Neither had broached their feelings of their
night together. He wondered what she
was thinking and feeling while his own mind was trying to find words that
described the completeness his heart felt again.
They pulled through the gate and up to the
house. Once they stopped, Joe hopped
out and ran around to open her door for her.
She still seemed hesitant but didn’t say anything.
“I’m just goin’ to grab a shower.” He threw his
keys on the table by the door. “Everything is in the same place so…..can I get
you anything?”
“Something to drink would be great.” She smiled
and followed him into the kitchen.
As he was pouring her drink, the phone rang.
“Talk to me!” Joe hit the speakerphone.
“Joe?
It’s me.”
Beth froze as she heard the female voice. Joe snagged the receiver from its cradle as
Beth turned and left the room. She fell
onto the couch, covering her face with her trembling hands, crying.
A woman!
Another woman was calling Joe.
It was like she was getting ready to live the nightmare over again. Last night they’d made love and so far this
morning he hadn’t said anything about it.
He was still acting like he had before but was he trying to spare her
feelings this time? Did last night
compare to the nights he’d spent with his mistress? Had she been good enough?
Back in the kitchen, Joe wracked his brain to
place the voice on the other end.
“Joe?”
“Yeah.”
“Baby, it’s Angie.” She sighed. “I know it’s
been awhile since…..well……I miss you and….”
“Look, Angie.” He pinched the bridge of his
nose. “Whatever it is, I’m not interested.
It’s over and it was a huge mistake.”
“How can you say that?” She gasped.
“Because I know. Again, I’m not interested.
Please don’t call ‘ere again.”
As he hung up, he stared at the doorway. He’d seen the look on Beth’s face before she
ran from the room. He needed to find
her and talk to her. He rounded the
corner to the living room, their eyes locked and his heart broke.
Chapter – 27
Joe stood frozen in place, mind racing. Beth.
His wonderful, beautiful Beth.
This amazing woman had actually given him a second chance. Why?
He still didn’t understand because he knew he didn’t deserve it. Not after what he’d done. But, she had and they’d both been down a
hard road to get them to the point they were at this morning. Then, one unwelcome phone call and all that
hard work could come down to nothing.
He wouldn’t let that happen without fighting
though. He loved her so much and needed
her that much more. Because, without
her, life didn’t have the same meaning.
“Beth.” He knelt in front of her. He pulled her hands away from her face and
wiped away the tears that were still streaming down her cheeks. “Baby,
please…..”
“I…Joe….I…..can’t.” She sobbed.
Joe took a deep breath. He had to be truthful and that truth was
going to hurt. “It was Angie.” He noticed her go still. “I haven’t talked to
‘er in months. I don’t want to talk to
‘er.”
“Don’t…”
“Please, I ‘ave to say this.” He grabbed her
chin and made her look at him. “I only want you, Beth. I want us.
No one else.” He choked as tears of his own filled his eyes. “You gave
me a second chance when I didn’t deserve one.
I want to give you everythin’ and I want to be everythin’ I wasn’t
before.” He blinked away tears. “I’m not whole without you.”
Beth stared into his stormy green eyes. The doubts and insecurities that had been
bouncing around her head suddenly ended.
There were only two times she’d seen Joe cry. When Steve died and when his father had a heart attack. He was bearing his soul to her, ready for
the consequences, yet willing to fight for their second chance.
“Oh Joe!” She fell into his arms. “I believe
you.”
“Never again, Beth.” He stroked her hair,
kissing her temple. “Never in my life will I want any woman but you.”
After a few minutes, when they’d both calmed
down, Joe carried her upstairs and laid her on the bed.
“I ‘ave plans for us so I’m going to grab that shower.”
He brushed her hair away from her face. “Lay ‘ere and relax. I won’t be long.” He brushed his lips across
hers before walking into the bathroom.
Beth smiled after him before turning over to
admire her favorite view. From the bed,
she could look out the French doors and out across the rolling green hills
behind the house. As she turned, a
photo frame caught her attention on the nightstand. Her heart skipped a beat as she stared at the photo of her and
Joe on their wedding day.
Chapter – 28
The day was filled with shopping. Joe was determined to take make her happy
and was doing everything in his power to put a smile on her face.
When they finished shopping, they returned to
the house and cleaned up for dinner.
“You look gorgeous.” Joe smiled as Beth walked
down the stairs in a long red dress.
“Really?” She turned, trying to examine the
dress for the dozenth time.
“Really.”
Just as they were walking out the door, the
phone began to ring. Both of them
stopped, neither wanting a repeat of that morning.
“The machine will get it.” Joe nodded his head.
“Right.” She smiled, taking his hand as they
walked to the car.
They no sooner pulled out of the driveway and
Joe’s cell phone started ringing. He
pulled it out of his pocket to silence it when he noticed Sav’s number.
“Make it quick.” Joe answered teasingly.
“Beth with you?”
“Yes.”
“What are you doin’?”
“We’re heading to dinner. What’s up, mate?”
“Um….Paige went into labor.”
“Really?” Joe turned to Beth.
“I know how important time is for the two of you
now……”
“What do you need?”
“I ran out of the house without Paige’s
bag. Needless to say she’s not very
happy right now.”
“Uh…no.”
“She’d also like for Beth to be here.”
“We’ll swing by the house and get your stuff and
be there in about thirty.”
“Thanks.” Sav hung up.
“What?” Beth asked.
“Paige is havin’ the baby. We need to get ‘er bag and go to the
hospital.”
“Well hurry!” She became excited. “I don’t want
to miss it!”
Chapter – 29
Paige’s labor and delivery was short and before
they knew it, the newest Savage was born.
“He’s so adorable.” Beth cried as she held him.
“What name did you decide on?” Joe asked.
“Scott.” Sav beamed from beside Paige.
Joe shook his head and watched as silent tears
slid down Beth’s cheeks. She’d always
wanted children and they’d discussed adoption when they were married. He could see the happiness on her face but
didn’t miss the sadness that set in her eyes.
A loss that still ached within her, a loss of their own child.
He gently grasped her shoulders and squeezed,
whispering in her ear. “You alright?”
She shook her head and wiped her tears. “Isn’t
he beautiful?”
“Adorable.” He looked up at Sav. “Looks like
Paige, this one.”
“Bullocks.” Sav chuckled. “Looks just like me.”
Paige and Beth looked at one another and
laughed.
Later that night, Joe and Beth returned to the
house.
“Want to cuddle up and watch a movie?” He
offered.
“Nah.
I’m exhausted.” She swallowed the tears. “I think I’ll just go lay
down.” She turned for the stairs.
“Beth…”
“Yeah?” She blinked away her tears.
“Come on, I’ll tuck you in.”
He walked her up to the bedroom and helped her
strip her clothes. Next, he stripped
his own then covered them both up in bed.
Pulling her into his arms, he held her as he felt the silent tears begin.
They’d been so lucky when she’d gotten pregnant
during their second year of marriage. A
miracle so to say. After his bout with
the mumps, doctors had made him believe that his chances for children were very
slim. So, when Beth lost the baby, the
loss had been devastating.
When he felt her body shake next to his, he
pulled her closer and kissed her hair, as tears of his own filled his eyes.
Chapter – 30
The months that followed only increased the
closeness between Joe and Beth. It
seemed they were happier than they’d ever been before. Everyone around them could see that they’d
overcome their past and were making way for a happy future.
“Stop in ‘ere.” Joe pointed to a strip mall as
he and Sav were returning from a golf outing.
“Here?” Sav raised his eyebrows.
“Yes.
Just pull in.”
They pulled in and parked, a huge grin covering
Sav’s face as he figured out where they were going.
“You already planned on stopping ‘ere, didn’t
you?”
“It’s why I picked that course this mornin’.”
Joe smiled.
“When are you going to ask ‘er?”
“I have it planned for tonight.”
“Well let’s go!” Sav opened the door to the
jewelers and followed Joe inside.
The guys spent very little time looking at
rings. Joe had chosen what he wanted
the week before and had only stopped in to pick up his choice.
“She’ll love it.” The salesman spoke.
“I hope so.” Joe stared at the three diamond,
platinum, emerald cut ring he’d chosen.
The three stones represented their past, present, and future.
“She’ll love it.” Sav added.
“Thank you.” Joe retrieved his credit card from
the clerk and the guys walked out.
Once they were in the car and driving, Joe asked
to stop off at his lawyer’s office.
“Here?” Sav was surprised.
“Just a little something to take care of.”
“You’re not arranging to pay off any women to
leave you alone, are you?”
“No.” Joe stepped out. “I’ll just be a few
minutes.”
“Sure.”
Joe walked in the building and was immediately
led into the office.
“Mr. Elliott.” Harold Shafstoll shook his hand
in greeting.
“Harold.” Joe smiled and took a seat. “How’s it
coming?”
“Just a few things to wrap up and a signature
from you.”
“Great.”
Harold re-arranged some papers, pulled out a
folder and placed it in front of Joe.
“Just your signature on the lines I ‘ave
marked.”
“This is the amount we agreed upon?” Joe pointed
to a figure.
“Covers the legal cost and a little extra to get
‘er back on ‘er feet.”
“All medical expenses were taken care of as
well?” Joe looked up.
“Everything.
Just as we discussed.” Harold smiled.
Joe signed his name on the lines and pushed the
papers back to Harold.
“Just get with my accountant for the balance.”
They shook hands.
“I’ll be giving you a call in a couple of
weeks.”
“Thank you.”
Chapter – 31
That night Joe had everything ready. The table was set by the balcony doors, the
candles were lit, dinner almost finished, and the ring was in his pocket.
If he didn’t know any better though, he’d think
he was more nervous than the first time he’d asked her. His hands were shaking and his palms were
sweaty.
Beth was upstairs finishing getting ready. He’d evaded her questions about the dress
he’d laid out and requested she wear.
He’d simply asked her to humor him.
“Well?
How do I look?” Beth asked from the stairs.
“Gorgeous.” Joe smiled up at her. “Wine?”
“Please.” She walked over to join him.
“Dinner’s just about ready.” He dropped a kiss
on her lips as he handed her a glass.
“What’s the occasion again?”
“Does there need to be one?” He pulled her into
his arms. “Can’t I just do something special for you?”
“I know you, Joe Elliott. You’re up to something.”
“Then just sit back and enjoy my evenin’.” He
released her and headed for the kitchen.
Beth felt her stomach flutter as he walked out
of the room. There was more to this
night then he was telling her. She
glanced at the table and noticed he’d used their best dishes, the candles, and
he’d even cooked dinner himself.
“Let’s eat!” He walked back in carrying their
food.
He kept the conversation easy and was pleased
when Beth complimented on his cooking.
Once they were done, he refilled their glass and led her out onto the
balcony.
“Tonight was beautiful.” Beth sighed as she
leaned into Joe.
“Anything for you.” He kissed the top of her
head. “But I’m not finished.” He stepped back and bent down on one knee.
“What are you doing?”
“I love you, Elizabeth and I was a fool to ‘ave
ever hurt you. You gave me a second
chance when I didn’t deserve one and I promise never to hurt you again.” He
reached into his pocket. “I want to be your husband.” He slid the ring onto her
finger. “And this time, I promise to do it right.”
He looked up into her eyes and saw the tears she
didn’t even try to hold back. He’d have
been worried if a smile wasn’t curved across her lips. She looked more beautiful than he’d ever
seen her.
“Will you marry me?”
Beth tried to answer but couldn’t. She just nodded her head and pulled him to
his feet.
“I’ll never let you down again, baby.” He pulled
her into his arms.
Epilogue
The church grounds of remote castle looked
beautiful as the small crowd of family and a few friends gathered for the
wedding.
Beth and Paige were locked away inside one of
the rooms when a knock came on the door.
“Yes?” Paige called as she zipped up Beth’s
dress.
“It’s me.” Phil called.
Paige walked over and opened the door, letting
Phil into the room. A low whistle rang
out as he caught sight of her.
“You like?” Beth smiled.
“He doesn’t deserve you.”
“He’s redeemed himself, I think.” Paige
commented.
“He has.” Beth smoothed out her dress. “Is he
here?”
“No sign of him or Sav yet.”
“What are they doing?” Paige raised her
eyebrows.
“He’ll be here.” Beth smiled. “Trust me.”
Meanwhile, speeding along the roads toward the
castle…….
“Slow down, won’t you.” Joe called from the back
seat.
“We’re goin’ to be late if I do.” Sav looked in
the rearview mirror. “And I for one don’t want to catch a lashing from Paige.”
“Once I give Beth ‘er gift, no one will even
remember that we were late. No, slow
down.”
Sav let off the accelerator and smiled. His mate sure had come a long way in the
last year.
When they finally arrived at the castle, Sav
went inside to find Paige and Beth.
“Just where ‘ave you been?” Paige asked.
“Man stuff.” He chuckled then turned to Beth.
“You look beautiful.”
“Thank you.”
“He’d like a few minutes with you before the
ceremony.”
“It’s bad luck!” Paige screeched.
“That….is an old wife’s tale!”
“Why?” Beth interrupted them.
“He has somethin’ to give you before the
ceremony.”
“Fine.” She took a final look in the mirror as
Sav went to get Joe.
A few minutes later, Sav walked in followed by
Joe. Sav immediately pulled Paige aside
and they watched as Joe approached Beth.
“Honey….” Joe whispered as Beth turned
around. She froze the moment she saw
what he was holding. “I kinda thought you’d like for ‘er to be with us.” He
handed the tiny bundle over to her.
Tears burned Beth’s eyes as she stared down at
the tiny face. “What…..who…..”
“She’s ours.” Joe wrapped his arms around her
from behind. “The adoption was finalized a few hours ago.”
“You did this for me?” She looked into his soft
green eyes.
“I did this for us.” He smiled. “Today’s the
beginning of our new life.”
“What’s her name?”
“Keelin.
It means slender and fair.”
Beth was silent as she watched the tiny baby in
her arms. A baby. A family.
That’s when she noticed that for the first time in nearly two years her
heart felt whole and she felt so full of joy she could nearly explode.
“I love you, Joe.”
“And I love you.” He whispered as Paige snapped
a picture of the three of them.
