What is the Gun?

The Gun was created by a company called "Shoot-a-way". They developed the Shoot-a-Way system--which allowed basketball players to shoot without having to retrieve every shot attempt. They could get a maximum number of shots in a very minimal amount of time. It was relatively inexpensive and easy to set up. The only problem with the "Shoot-a-way" was that players did not move a lot before shots like they would in a game--they pretty much stood in one of three spots and let the shots fly. "The Gun" has changed that concept. At Boone High School, basketball has not been a particularly successful sport, especially on the boys side of it. We have had good success the last five years in girls' basketball, but have never been a great shooting team. At Boone we do not believe in specialization and therefore encourage our boys and girls to participate in as many sports as possible. In Iowa, summer baseball and softball take up a lot of time that in many states is devoted to other sports. Our athletes do not have hours to spend playing and shooting the basketball. The Gun takes care of that problem. A player can get hundreds of shots in as little as twenty to thirty minutes. The biggest concept is that our players simply do not have any good excuses why they can not get in the gym and improve--because it does not take very much time.

The original shoot-a-way.

This was a great concept and still is for a lot of programs. It retails for about $1500.

The Gun can swivel on its base.

The Gun has two different swivel modes. Mode A is a random mode that makes the shooters follow its movement and then passes it randomly. . The Gun also has a timer. It will pass balls, and by the way it will hold up to six balls at a time, anywhere from one to 10 seconds apart. Mode B will swivel to any one of ten different spots around the perimeter of the court, depending on what the timer is set at. If neither Mode A or B are selected, it will continue passing to the same spot. It can pass anywhere from 15 to 30 feet and is great for free throws.

The Gun forces proper arch.

The net retrieval system forces shooters to get proper arch when they shoot. The net can be lowered for low post shots or for younger players. The Gun has proven to increase shooting percentages of teams by an average of seven percent!!
