The god of sin, Mordred is neutral evil. His titles include the Dark One and the Devourer. The domains associated with Mordred are dark, death, evil, and war. Followers of Mordred are known as clerics.
The church of Mordred is dedicated to the goal of spreading the Seven Deadly Sins throughout all the races of Annwn. These include greed, lust, gluttony, sloth, vanity, envy, and hate. The clergy believes that when all of Annwn has been corrupted by these seven sins, Mordred will reign supreme. All clerics wear the unholy symbol of Mordred, a serpent eating its own tale, coiled around a black disk, symbolizing the eternity of true evil, and the inevitability of Mordred's eventual triumph upon the world. The favored weapon of Mordred is the morningstar.
Ceremonial dress for clerics of Mordred consists of robes of black and blood red, and are worn for important ceremonies, such as sacrifices. Major ceremonies are conducted frequently in hidden temples throughout Annwn, and openly in the Westmarch empire of Dalon. Such rites are typically performed on the darkest nights of the year, and feature rituals of the foulest nature, frequently involving human sacrifices.
Mordred's followers are a diverse lot, and usually each cleric will revel
more in the spread of one particular sin over all others. Some followers
prefer to slowly insinuate and corrupt societies from positions of power and
influence, while others blaze across the land, spreading terror and death
indiscriminately. Whatever their method, clerics who are particularly
successful in spreading sin throughout the lands are lavishly rewarded with
dark gifts, and the clergy has an elaborate hierarchy.
Mordred is unquestionably the most dominant force for evil that exists on
Annwn, and acts as the head of the pantheon of evil. While all evil
deities thus respect his wishes, several work so closely with Mordred that
they might be considered the lieutenants of his army of evil. These
deities are known as Mordred's Four Horsemen, and include Kos, god of war
and destruction, Apshai, god of blight and famine, Scourge, god of pestilence
and disease, and Hel, goddess of Death. Mordred's archenemy is Arawn,
a deity of roughly equal power, and diametrically opposite beliefs.
The followers of the two are implacable enemies, and holy wars between the
two groups are legendary. Although Mordred’s followers have been forced
to work in secret throughout most of Eastmarch due to Arawn’s influence there,
Mordred is openly worshipped in the Westmarch Empire of Dalon. Furthermore,
recent events have significantly weakened Arawn's influence over much of
Annwn, while Mordred’s power has increased, with the two now roughly equal
in power. Like Arawn, Mordred has a small group of loyal Paladins,
who actively crusade to destroy the forces of good in Mordred's name.
Mordred has the widest range of followers of all deities (even greater than
Arawn), and is worshipped in most areas of the world.
