The "first taper" listed in the tables
shifts according to this table from one level to the next highest.
For example, a Level II spell with a Red taper would have a Pink taper
in the same spot for the Level III version of the spell. This pattern
only works for the FIRST taper, it will NOT work for "personal" tapers.
Calculating personal tapers is only possible with programs like SplitPea.

Each spell level requires that the
character have a certain skill level in that school of magic. The
regular spell levels I through VI follow a similar pattern of skill requirements
listed below:
Level I: 1-25
Level II: 40-75
Level III: 90-125
Level IV: 145-170
Level V: 180-210
Level VI: 220-260
Level VII: 265-330
The first number is the lowest level casting
is possible (very high fizzle rate/component burn), the second is the level
at which almost no fizzling occurs. Some spells are more difficult
than others of the same level, so this is just a general guide.
The skill level required for spells outside
the normal spell level hierarchy, i.e. Portal Spells and Ring/Wall Spells,
are listed under their entries in the above table.

Spellcasting involves not only the
use of spell components and magic skill, but the utterance of a magic phrase
that correlates to the components. Although the spellcaster does
not have to worry about what words he says (spell component order takes
care of it automatically) it can still be helpful to know the language
of spellcasting.
All spellcasting phrases consist of three
parts that compose two words, with only one exception (Recall the Sanctuary).
The first word is the Herb, and is disyllabic. The second word consists
of two syllables as well, the first one corresponding to the Powder, and
the second to the Potion. Scarabs, tapers, and talismans have no
effect on spell language.
