Mana is the base energy in the world. Through consolidating and reacting, it can create matter and life. Mana is what powers the elements. Originally, mana ran free in the universe creating much chaos. As it began to gather together, it began to take on a sentience. This sentience split into two parts. The first part was Holy and he was the force of light, order, and protection. The second part was Entropy and he was the force of darkness, chaos, and destruction. By pooling their powers together they began to create the universe using the mana that was there. Holy would create and Entropy would destroy and thus send the mana back into the cycle. Together they created life, using mana to created other souls and taught them how to manipulate the raw mana in the universe in specific ways.
All was not well though. Entropy had began to view Holy's use of mana to create as destructive and began to fear he'd use up too much and lock up the universe before Entropy could recycle the mana. Holy began to look at Entropy's destruction with suspicion, fearing Entropy would destroy everything and return the universe back to pure chaos. And so, they fought and the souls they created also fought. The result of the epic clash ripped a whole in the universe where all the mana had been used peremenately. This whole began to drain the rest of the mana in the universe. Seeing what they had done, Holy and Entropy put aside their differences and worked quickly to remove that section from as much of the universe as they could. Though their was still small draining going on, most of the universe had been saved for the moment.
Holy and Entropy retired from their universal reworking. They left much of it to their 'children', the souls they had created. These new souls, calling themselves espers, took up where their creators had left off. They eventually grew bored with the simple universe though. With a combining of powers, they created creatures to inhabit the universe. They gave these creatures a physical form and taught them what they could of using mana. The creation of souls had been getting exceptionally weaker each generation away from true mana, so the new creatures were very limitted in their use of mana. They eventually began to offer gifts as favors to the espers and the espers began to look upon certian groups of creatures as theirs to protect. When the creatures warred with each other, they often brought their esper allies into the conflict as well. During the battles, a group of espers became trapped within the moons. Due to the moon's strong mana focus, the espers were turned to magicite and their powers were passed to the creatures living on the moon. These creatures became especially strong and powerful. The were the lunarians.
After years of minor skirmishes, things eventually began to settle down. Certian creatures banded together and evolved. They built civilizations of great acts of magic. As this occured, an devestating effect began to take ahold of the espers. Many of the espers dedicated to Entropy began to experience thoughts of darkness and destruction. They began to believe that the world would be better if everything was put back the way it was at the beginning. Some say that Entropy had finally gone insane. Others say this was the result of the draining effect of the mana blasted zone taking effect. Still others say that it was some other dark intelligence creating these thoughts. Whatever the cause, many of the darker espers began to ravage the land instead of helping it. They taught creatures the arts of darkness and destruction. They even taught the ways of trapping souls and animating the dead to the creatures. By the time that their actions were recognized, they had already entrenched themselves in the esper world. The 'fiends', as they were called, decided that they could destroy the balance of mana and thus return the universe to its ultimate beginning by releasing the mana trapped in the moons. They attacked the moons, attempting to destroy everything there including the moon. With a combined effort and sacrifice, the lunarians were able to defeat the fiends in an epic battle. The result blasted nearly all life from the moons and left them cold and baren. Nearly all the lunarians were killed and the rest were forced into a slumber due to their mana drain.
All was safe again, for a time. Then the most unusual thing happened. The creatures had found a way to create even more souls. The first artificial intelligence and robots were created. These new souls were so far removed from pure mana that they could only focus mana in very specific ways and needed a power source to function. And that leads up to the present era...
