WET REACTIONS...

WET CHEMISTRY is a term commonly used for reactions occurring in wateror liquid phase. The formation of a gas, precipitate, gain or loss in heat, or a change in color are indicators that any type of reaction occurred. Reactants in aqueous reactions normally are either polar or ionic in nature.

The FOUR BASIC REACTION TYPES of any type of reactions are decompostion, single replacement, double replacement, and synthesis.

DECOMPOSITION is the breaking down or one substance into more simpler substances. Decomposition reactions may be recognized by the presence or more product than reactant substances.

SINGLE REPLACEMENT is the exchange of one part of a compound with another substance. Thus, like the wall flower who taps a shoulder for a dance parter, the result is still a wall flower watching the dance. And the number of dancers remains the same. Likewise, the number of reactants and products do not change in a single replacement reaction.

DOUBLE REPLACEMENT or METATHESIS is the mutual exchange of two parts of each of two reactants. Like the square dancing couples changing partners the molecules rearrange themselves in a metathesis reaction.

ACID-BASE or NEUTRALIZATION REACTIONS are a special type of double displacement reaction for Arrhenius or Bronsted-Lowry acids and bases and some Lewis acids and bases. SYNTHESIS is the combination of two or more substances to form fewer products. So any reaction in which there are fewer products than reactants is in some way a synthesis reaction.

REDOX REACTIONS involve the oxidation of one reactant and the reduction of another. A redox reaction may also be any one of the other four basic types of reactions. COMBUSTION is the reaction of oxygen with anything, or the reaction of organic compounds with oxygen. Since many of these reactions occur ir the gas phase, they are usually not included in wet chemistry.
