ATOMS are the smallest unit of matter that may be founc chemically. Atoms are composed of PROTONS and NEUTRONS in a NUCLEUS surrounded by orbiting ELECTRONS. ELEMENTS are PURE SUBSTANCES and the smallest distinguishible types of matter. The ATOMIC NUMBER or number of neutrons of an atom identies it as a particular element, IONS are atoms which have either gained or lost electrons. ANIONS are atoms which have gained electrons or have been REDUCED. CATIONS are atoms which have lost electrons or have been OXIDIZED.
