Crime Scene Kits

Crime scene kits come in different sizes and contain instruments and implements for different purposes. For collecting latent fingerprints to vacuuming trace evidence

A fishing tackle box can serve as a receptacle for the many items needed for crime scene preservation and initial analysis:

* Crime Scene Tape and a box of chalk

* Tweezers and a box of swabs

* Pen, sketchpad and log books.

* Camera with extra film and a cassette recorder and blank tapes

* Paper sacks and envelopes

* Disposable clothing, gloves and masks

* String

* Measuring implements


* Orange evidence adhesive roller

* Portable alternative light source(ALS) which means infrared, ultraviolet or laser.



The specific use kits for processing the scene have standard contents as well:

1) A basic fingerprinting kit might contain the following:

* Fingerprint powder in different colors to contrast with different color surfaces and to apply to different types of surfaces also some in a florescent version for use with alternative light sources.

* Fiberglass dusting brushes

* Camelhair brushes to clean dust from prints.

* Clear lifting tape and dispenser and/or lift tabs.

* Latent print cards and elimination print forms with markers.

* Fingerprint card container, to keep them separate.

* Ink pad for taking prints on the spot.

* Magnifying lens, scissors, tweezers and scalpel.

* Toweletts for removing ink

* Evidence seals, tags, bags, and boxes of different sizes.

* Disposable gloves.

2) Casting kit for tire and footprint impressions, would include:

* Casting powder.

* Casting compound

* Water container and mixing bowl

* Mixing implements

* Casting framers of different sizes

* Rubber lifters a fixative and snow print wax spray, which helps to take casings from snow.

3) Another type of casting kits is designed to take impression from tool marks. It may include:

* An extruder gun that allows a mix of casting material to be squeezed into awkward places to get clean impressions.

4) For shootings, an investigator might use laser trajectory kit, which helps to assess projectile paths at a crime scene.

The kit includes

* A laser pointer, an angel finder, a centering cone, penetration rods and a tripod mount

5) Trace Evidence collection requires different procedures for different types.

Each kit comes with a knife for scraping dried evidence and a wide variety of containers for different types of evidence such as:

* Metal cans for paint chips or glass

* For lifting prints from dust a special electrostatic print lifter

6) Gunshot residen kits are developed for labs that use either atomic absorption analysis or the scanning electron microscope.
