 Photo Literacy

Photographs are among the most important and readily available of all primary resources.  In a media rich culture students of all ages need the skills that will help them to understand and interpret the wide variety of media that is a part of their everyday lives. Since the early 1800's photography has affected the way we view our world and many would argue that the camera has become a symbol of Modernity.

This site will help you to understand the history and culture of photography and will make suggestions for the viewing of historically significant as well as contemporary photographs.

Questions for Analyzing Photographs as Primary Resources

  • Who created the photograph and why?
  • Was the photographer a neutral party, or did he have opinions or interests that might have influenced how and why the photograph was taken in this way?
  • Did the photographer wish to inform or persuade others? Was he attempting to be objective?
  • Was the photograph meant to be publicly or privately displayed?  Was it produced for personal use, for one or more individuals, or for a large audience?
  • Has the photographer digitally altered the photo?  Was this done for artistic reasons?
