She Smiled
It was funny really, the look on all those Admiral faces when Voyager had come through that Borg cube. It almost made everything that had happened during the past seven years in the Delta Quadrant worth while. Almost.
It was ironic really, the way Chakotay had looked at her while this last mission was in its duration, the small smile tugging at his lips some of the time; the way his eyes seemed to glow. It almost made what the older version of herself had said dissipate. Almost.
It was amusing really, the fact that they had made it home only slightly worse for the ware with many new crew members who would now know the joy of Star Fleet at long last. It almost made her forget all the crewmen she had lost in body and soul. Almost.
Tears stung at her eyes and her stomach ached with hollowness as Tom left the bridge to go to his new child and wife leaving Chakotay to man the comm.
It was sad really, the realization that Voyager was no longer their home and this make shift family was no more. It almost made her wish she could go back. Almost.
The ship enter Earth’s atmosphere, she felt butterflies in her stomach, her feet seemed to lift off the ground as Voyager touched down. She breathed in and out slowly, looking to her side expecting to see Chakotay but he wasn’t there, she then looked around the bridge, everyone seemed to be in a daze, she didn’t blame them.
It was cute really, the way Harry’s eyes glistened, the innocence seemly had returned. It almost made her forget how everyone on the ship had lost themselves in hell at one point or another. Almost.
It was heartbreaking really, the knowing that they had never really been friends, just people pushed in an impossible situation making them work together and lean on each other, loosing touch with them was all that was left. It almost made her sad. Almost.
They were now in the cargo bay, waiting for the doors to open. Glancing around she realized she should have felt sad, it was then ending of an era, breathing in seemed so hard it felt as though someone was pushing the air out of her chest instead of in. The doors began to open and she watched the sunlight as it began to cast a shadow on the inside of the gray room, she felt the sunlight hit her face, blinding her momentarily. It felt so warm.
It was frightening really, knowing you had sent your friends and ones you loved into the fire, she knew she should regret what was going to happen. It almost made her scream out to her crew. Almost.
The doors were wide open, Star Fleet personal rushed in pushing the old Marquis against the wall, taking B’Ellana’s child away from her and Tom and handing it to some security officer. The looks she was receiving chilled her to the bone. Chakotay called out to her, screamed her name with such accusation she had to look away, her head turned down slightly as she walked away from him and the rest with her Star Fleet crew in tow, their real families and friends were waiting for them out side. The cheering began.
It was hard really, the meeting of old friends and family, knowing that you had changed in their eyes and them in yours. It almost made her regret the things she had done. Almost.
It was tragic really, the way everything had ended. It almost made her feel something for the Marquis. Almost.
The cheers were deafening, the hugs were incredible, tears came to her eyes. They were home, they had made it, Star Fleet had triumphed, nothing else mattered and she was the one who had accomplished it. She had. Her and her Star Fleet crew. The Marquis where already gone, she should feel bad, she knew that, but she didn’t. Out of sight, out of mind. The parties began that were never to end. She began to smile.
