It's a bright day at Jerdan Weyr. Another hatching has just occurred and 18 new lives have started. The preparations for the Impression banquet are underway. You try to wander into the Lower Caverns, but Lorin quickly shoos you away saying that it will only be a few more hours. Wondering what you are going to do with your time, you decide to go see M'deran and Bronze Gerith

You wander back out into the bowl. You know that M'deran's weyr is one of the upper ones, but you still aren't sure which one. You berate yourself on your poor memory. You move around the bowl looking for a convey to M'deran's weyr, when you literally bump right into him. The collision knocks you to the ground.

M'deran looks down on you his dark eyes apologetic and concerned. The young rider is soaking wet from the top of his 5'8" frame to the bottom. His light brown hair is plastered to his head as if molded to the scalp. Behind him, Gerith's hide glows with cleanliness. It's obvious that they have just come from a bath at the lake.

M'deran's proud Gerith

"Sorry about that," the bronze rider says lending you a damp hand to help you up. "Are you alright?"

"Yes," you say brushing dirt off of your red trousers and maroon shirt. "I was just looking for you."

"Really? I guess you found us," he says with a chuckle, "or did we find you."

You laugh with the young man. Something seems different about him and his dragon. You stare at them for a minute before you realize what it is. They are both older. Gerith is a full adult dragon, and M'deran is a mature rider. "Wow," you say.

M'deran looks at you puzzled. "What?'

"It just dawned on me. You two are full grown now and fully trained."

"Yeah, we don't have an assignment yet, but we fly every Fall. Gerith and I are a great team. Not a score and not a tangle of Thread missed," he says beaming.

"I heard that Mikath is about to fly. Do you think that he'll try for her?"

"I don't know, but he might. He doesn't seem to be showing any true preferences or care for that sort of thing right now, but he likes Gold Nemsiath He has only recently matured, you know."

"Okay, I was just curious. What do you think of her rider?"

"Galvi? She's beautiful and has a great attitude. She's a great weyrwoman, and she would probably make a good weyrmate," M'deran says with no qualms.

"Okay. Curiosity just gets the better of me."

M'deran looks at you abashed. He has dried off from standing in the sun. Parts of his brown hair are now sticking up at odd angles."Why are we standing out here? Let's go to my weyr. Gerith, if you would please?"

"You know I'll do anything for you. I like your friend too," the big bronze says to his rider turning his whirling blue eyes toward you.

M'deran relates the short comment, and Gerith bends his forearm for you to mount. M'deran gives you a hand up and then sits himself behind you on the thick bronze neck. Suddenly with seemingly little effort, Gerith launches himself into the air and glides to one of the upper ledges. You notice M'deran's weyr is close to the queens' weyrs. You think this very convenient if Gerith should fly a queen and become more than a normal fighting dragon and M'deran more than a rider.

Your thoughts are interrupted as Gerith gracefully backwings to the ledge. You dismount and follow M'deran into the cool cave. Gerith follows closely behind you eager to get to his enormous stone couch that occupies one side of his cave. The other contains all of the necessary fighting gear. The bronze quickly settles himself, and you are surprised to see that he takes up most of the couch. Slowly his sets of lids begin to close, and he is fast asleep. You decide to continue follow M'deran quietly.

You are now in the large sleeping cavern. M'deran motions for you to sit at the table in the center of the room. You can't help but notice the elaborate decoration of the set. You comment on this. "M'deran, I love this table set. Where did you get it?"

"Actually one of the new candidates made it for me. His name is Attok. He's quite handy when it comes to wood," he says with a smile as he hands you a mug of klah. "What brings you here in the first place? You said you were looking for me."

"I was coming for the Impression banquet and to see all of the new riders and hatchlings. Lorin wouldn't let me any where near the Lower Caverns, so I decided to come find you."

"It's nice to know we're thought of. I wouldn't get too full tonight though. Isabeth's eggs are due to hatch soon too. Could even be tomorrow? You wouldn't be able to enjoy that feast if you over do it tonight."

"Very true," you say with a large grin. Then smells and sounds start drifting up from the weyrbowl. "It sounds like the banquet has started. We better head down before the food is cold or worse yet the good food is gone."

M'deran laughs at you and your ravenous stomach. His laugh is full and hearty not something at all that you would expect from this young man. "Come on lets go," he says. Then you and he mount Gerith and fly down to join the festivities. You spend the rest of the night eating, drinking, and catching up.
