Hi, I'm Elvis. That's right. With sideburns. I'm here to talk about my favorite TV program, THE (X) FILES!

Since it first entered network television, THE X-FILES has gone from a little-known cult favorite to an international phenomenon, with episodes recorded and broadcast in other languages in Europe, south America and other nations abroad. The show, which revolves around the exploits of two intrepid FBI agents investigating unusual cases deemed unsolved -- or "X-Files" -- has shown splendid writing, excellent acting and movie quality special effects in virtually every episode. Indeed, tuning in every Sunday can be more like seeing a short film than watching a television show.

The X-Files has virtually overnight helped revitalize interest in science fiction. Its critics said it'd never make it cause it was too wierd, too out there, too odd. It didn't seem to be hard-core sci-fi, but nor was it a straight cop show or drama. It was all of the above, mixed together, and the blend was and is a good one. Eight seasons later the show's momentum is little abated, despite a change in casting that has one of the show's stars, David Duchovny who portrays Agent Fox Mulder, out in limbo.

The two have been fixtures of the screen since THE (X) FILES first began broadcasting on Friday nights.

THE (X) FILES has the advantage of having some of the best actors in the business. These include excellent supporting cast including Mitch Pileggi, who portrays the man who for most of the show's history was the agent's immediate boss, Walter Skinner, not to mention the Lone Gunmen, the trio of conspiracy theorists who've assisted Mulder on several cases and have been featured Prominently in several episodes, including "Unusual Suspects" and its follow-up episode, "Three of a kind" -- both excellent eps, by the way. And where would a show be without convincing villains; THE (X) FILES has had loads, from the sinister Cigarette Smoking Man to the double-dealing FBI agent/Syndicate enforcer/loner Krycek to guest aliens, mutants and monsters of every sort. But most often the spotlight falls upon the outstanding duo of David Duchovny (agent Mulder) and Gillian Anderson (agent Scully). Mulder is gone now, for how long it is uncertain, but Scully has shown her skills time and again. Gillian is no push over and won't take crap from anyone, man woman or mutant.

The show now has a new face, Agent Doggett, played by actor Robert Patrick of "Terminator 2" fame. This by-the-book agent tries Scully's patience even as Mulder's abduction -- and supposed "return" in the beginning of Season Eight -- keep the two agents on their toes. Doggett has proved himself a good guy to have on your side in a fight, and willing to stick up for Scully... but the tension between him and Mulder is real indeed. A loss to the show in some fans' minds is Alex Krycek. The notorious villain was shot by Skinner as he tried to kill Mulder.

Still "Out There"

Throughout a wild ride and a great eight seasons [and a ninth one in the works], the X-Files has undergone some changes -- but it has remained unique. Others have tried to imitate its sci-fi savy; they have come and gone. The X-Files remains, and in addition has one of the largest fan bases out there. Why? First of all the interaction between the characters; the M&S relationship was intense at times but so wonderfully developed over the past seven seasons, from moments when the agents needed each other, as when Mulder rescued Scully from a serial killer in "Irresistible" (01/13/95) to scenes, such as those in the X-Files feature film, where they needed each other for support and even felt openly the romantic feelings that had been hinted at ever since the pilot ep gave us Scully in her underwear with Mulder checking to see if she had the telltale twin dots that had been found on all the victims in a series of deaths they were investigating.

And then, who can forget the jokes in the episodes featuring Tooms, the mutant, such as when Mulder and Scully are staking out the suspect's house. Mulder says to Scully, who's just arrived bearing a paper bag: "If there's an ice tea in that bag, it could be love." Scully smiles. "Must be fate, Mulder. Root Beer."

Some might say that the show has deteriorated since its earlier days, with more episodes based upon humor thrown into the mix. But the fact remains that The X-Files is the only totally original sci-fi program to make it big on network television in the past few decades at least. Indeed, some, like myself, conclude that it is arguably the best program on network television.

Some oldies that have been featured in episodes of THE (X) FILES:

"Twilight Time," by The Platters: This tune originally came out around 1958, but was used in an episode of THE (X) FILES titled "Kill Switch" in which it was recorded on a computer to disc to mask the disc's main recording -- a computer program called "Kill Switch" which was designed to disable a dangerous artificial intelligence program that had taken on a life of its own. When Mulder and Scully insert the disc into their car's stereo "Twilight Time" plays and the headlights of the vehicle flash like disco strobes.

"Red Right Hand" by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds: This creepy tune was featured in an ep wherein Scully is kidnapped by Duane Barry, claimed alien abductee and escaped mental patient. He has her gagged and bound in the trunk of a car and is driving her to "sky mountian," the claimed abduction site, when this song is playing on the car stereo. (Note: a different version of the same song was featured in one of the recent and popular "Scream" horror movies).

"Beyond the Sea" by Bobby Darin: This grand ol' tune was featured in a first season episode by the same title, in which a convict on death row attempted to convince Mulder and Scully that he could contact the dead in order to have himself spared and catch a serial killer. The episode almost didn't make it because there were concerns that it too closely resembled the film "Silence of the Lambs", especially with attempts by the convict to convince Scully that he could contact her recently departed father. The song itself was played at Scully's parents' wedding.

"Walking in Memphis" by Cher: Featured in "Post-modern Prometheus," an episode that included several firsts, including Mulder and Scully kissing at a Cher concert at the episode's end. The ep itself was filmed in all black and white and was sort of a dream-sequence story revolving around a misunderstood monster who would have done the good Dr. Frankenstein proud.
