Feature Article: Walt Disney, the Internet You and Me!
By:  Jacqueline McLaughlin Hale
*******************************************************

I am writing this particular piece from Orlando, Florida where I have come with my family to experience all that Walt Disney World has to offer.  Those of you who have been here before know how incredibly overwhelming the various Disney parks can be.  And so I'm sure that you can appreciate the words of my five-year-old when he said, "Mom, I'm tired of having fun.  Can't we just stay home today?"

Yes, we came to Disney EXPECTING to be entertained.  But I left with so much more!

One day, towards the end of the day, I was tired and hot and well, just done.  When my family announced that they wanted to shop I decided that this was the perfect opportunity to sit on a bench, stare into space and relax.  Surprisingly for this time of year, The Magic Kingdom seemed exceptionally crowded.  People were everywhere!  So, it wasn't long before my relaxation turned into people watching.

I saw all kinds of people that day, people from all over the USA and all over the world.  I saw people of all colors and sizes and shapes.  I saw people who spoke different languages with different accents.  I saw young people and old people, fat people and thin people, white people, brown people, black people and red people (those were the ones who were sunburned).  I saw physically challenged people and mentally challenged people.  I saw every type of person imaginable.  And I realized, while watching all of these people, that for all of our differences, we were essentially the same.  Every one of us had come to Walt Disney World to share time with our families, to be entertained, to escape from our own personal rat race and to create memories for a lifetime.  Regardless of our race, religion, politics or economics we were all there for our children.  They were the common threads between us.

That day, I was no better than anyone else was and there was no one better than I was.  My beliefs were not right, nor were they wrong, they just didn't matter.  What did matter was that all of these different people and I worked together to navigate the Disney World parks (there are 4 of them), the Disney rides and the long Disney lines.  We stayed out of each other's way.  We took turns and respected one another's place in lines.  We gave each other directions; we shared our ride experiences and sometimes we just shared our life stories.  We weren't competitive and we didn't try to influence anyone.  We were courteous and respectful.

Walt Disney envisioned an entire world like this.  He brought it to life in Epcot.  It's an environment in which people of everywhere work together for the benefit of all.  He saw that we needed one another.  He saw that we could help each other.  He saw our similarities.  That day at the Magic Kingdom that's what I saw too.

It reminded me that the Internet allows us to "see" each other more clearly.  Online we are brought together by our commonalties instead of driven apart by our differences.  We are unable to see them.  It "blinds" us to our physical, political, religious and economic dissimilarities.  In doing so, it does us a great service.  It provides the opportunity to connect with each other literally and figuratively.  It gives us a chance to see what Disney saw: that we are NOT so different after all.

You may wonder, "What does this have to do with MY life?"  The only way that we can ever solve the problems facing all of humanity today is by coming together.  We can only come together through our similarities.  We can only recognize our similarities one person at a time.  So the next time you're out and you see someone who looks different, someone you may find yourself fearing or even hating for no apparent reason at all, remember that they too are somebody's son or daughter.  Remember that they too may have children that they love.  Remember that underneath the exterior differences, deep down, all they want is to love and to be loved, just like you.

Yes, Walt Disney built a successful and profitable business.  But more importantly, he built a place that would bring us together to share some fun and sometimes a whole lot more.  Maybe someday we'll all be able to see what Disney saw…

Define Your Goals to Get Organized
By: Nita Jackson
*******************************************************

I have been thinking about some of the things I want to accomplish. The more I thought about it, the more
I decided that my biggest opportunity is NOT is just accomplishing more things in the year 2000.  I don't want to have a list of another 10 things to do if I haven't accomplished the last list!

Author Anthony Robbins says “How would you feel if you had mastered and attained all your goals a year from now? How would you feel about yourself?  How would you feel about your life? Answering these questions will help you develop compelling reasons to achieve your goals. Having a powerful enough why will provide you with the necessary how. Take this opportunity to brainstorm your top ten one-year goals. Under each one, write a paragraph about why you are absolutely
committed to achieving these goals within the year. “

Heres my top ten of I resolve to’s:

1) Have less “stuff” coming into my living space.

2)  A place for everything. Have a place for the bills, statements, etc that are necessary

3) Say no . While I love to be the recipient of hand me down reading material,I’m going to be putting my foot down in this area.

4) Toss it. I’m getting rid of everything that fit me 10 years ago because I have no vain imaginations that I will be that age again.

5) Simplify ,simplify ,simplify. I don't need 5 serving bowls, six hair conditioners, six household cleaners and 7 sets of sheets.

6) Stop being the fairy god mother of “I was saving this for you” or “I thought you could use this”.

 7) Be true to my vision and stop inconviencing myself with others agendas.

8) Write it down. I have a fear of lists, that they will deem me as a failure rather than just being a reminder. I resolve to overcome this fear.

 9) Stop envying others. Do what I need to do to make my life and my goals realistic. I have the power to stop biting off more than I can chew.

10) Make monthly deposits to Salvation Army or battered womens shelter

Take a few moments to enumerate your top ten.  Its okay if the goals are simple.  Dont think of it as a mandate but rather a mission statement. If ten seems to overwhelming start with five.If you get nine, no big deal.  Remember, they’re your goals, not someone elses.

             PARENTING TIP OF THE MONTH

My child is so competitive in and out of the family. Why is this?

Competitive children strive for success because they believe only in themselves and do not care what others are doing. Children need to learn to cooperate and not compete in the family. Who in the family exhibits this type of behavior? Your child may be mimicking either or both parents.

Passing Thoughts:Happiness Isn't Parked in Your Garage
By The Mystic Beagle
http://www.mysticbeagle.com
*******************************************************

Countless people write to me each week describing problems within their relationships which ultimately trace back to financial burdens.  Arguments and stress over money, jobs, late bills, bad credit, and so on, are very common issues within many relationships today.

We must realize true happiness can never be found in "things" - cars, clothes, jewelry, a new house, or even money itself.  If this is where you're looking for happiness and satisfaction, you're in for much disappointment and misery.

If paying for that new car in your garage is causing you stress and putting a burden on your family and relationships, the answer is simple - get rid of it!  If your mortgage has a strangle-hold on your budget, the answer isn't refinancing or second mortgages, etc., the real answer is selling it and buying something you can better afford.  If credit card bills are killing you - cut up your cards, then find assistance if needed to organize your dept into one payment at a much lower interest rate.

The key is to stop buying into the notion that we need that new car, new house, fancy boat, etc., to be happy.  It's simply a lie.  I think many who have fallen into financial trouble know they need to make a radical change in their lifestyles and spending habits, but don't because they can't seem to give up those things which they have become accustom to.

If this sounds all too familiar, then I hope you'll find the courage to make the needed changes in your life and finances to rid yourself of these burdens once and for all.  That new car in your garage can't give you love, nor will it ever provide you with true happiness, but it most certainly can destroy those things which really matter.

My son left gum in his pocket and I did not find it before I did the laundry. I didn't see it until after it went through the dryer. Now my dryer has skid marks with lint on it. What do you suggest for getting gum off the interior of a dryer.  Please send your ideas to me at jahale95@yahoo.com with "gum" in the subject.
