                       WELCOME

Happy September and Back to School!  Along those lines I have a favor to ask of all of you.

My son has a wonderful karate instructor who is beginning college this fall.  He is the kind of human being we all hope our children will grow up to be like.  He is respectful, intelligent, kind and well, just plain ole, all around good!

He has entered a contest in which the winner receives a college scholarship.  The contest involves building a website.  Part of the criteria for winning is based upon the number of individuals who view the site. And so, I'd like to ask all of you to visit it.  Don't worry, it doesn't try to sell you anything.  It is called "Heroism in Action" and it's simply an outstanding site dedicated to the great heroes of the 20th century and to the hero inside of you.  The web address is http://library.thinkquest.org/C001515

Please help a great young man win a scholarship and visit his site today.  Feel free to give out his URL liberally to your friends and family <grin>.  It's a fantastic way to make a difference in someone's life.  Help give him a great start!  And I'll keep you posted on the results!  Now, on to other business...

I received so many wonderful articles from talented writers this month that I couldn't fit them all here.  So, I've put them on the website because I didn't want you to miss them.  Please take a few minutes to read:
10 Areas of Abundance in Your Life Right Now(http://angelfire.com/sd/BalancedWoman/abundance.html and Back to School Organization (http://angelfire.com/sd/BalancedWoman/bktoscho.html  But before you go, please read on...

Quick site updates for you…

Please stop by and cast your vote at the site poll, if you haven't yet.  It's been changed!  This month's site poll asks: Compared to how you thought it would be, when you were younger, is your life...While there, you'll also find the results of the previous poll at http://www.betweenfriends.org/poll.html Remember, we don't ask for your name, email address or any other personal data--just your opinion!

This month's recipe is from me! Like all the rest, it's quick, easy, and delicious!  You can find it at: http://www.betweenfriends.org/househol.htm

Well, that's it for this month.  I hope you enjoy this issue!

Feature Article: Finding Your Spirit!
By:  Jacqueline McLaughlin Hale
*******************************************************
According to our recent site poll, 43% of you want to read more about "Finding Your Spirit".  It surpassed body image issues by more than 10 percent and learning or "mind development" by more than 20 percent.  Books on bestseller lists support this message, as do talk shows such as Oprah.

It seems our souls are hungering for attention, nurturing and just plain ole recognition.  But why?  What's happened?  Why have we become a people who have obviously neglected our spirits for so long that now that they are crying out to be found and to be heard?  Where do we look?  How do we listen?

Our forefathers spent their days just trying to survive.  Before cars, grocery stores, heat, and plumbing they were consumed with providing food and protection for their families.  Life was tough.  People died young.  Mortality rates were high.  Loss was commonplace.

Technology, medicine and science had not "advanced".  So when our ancestors couldn't find answers or when they simply didn't understand they turned inward.  Turning inward gave them faith.  At times, that's probably all that pulled them through.  They spoke with their souls everyday.  They "listened" to the responses.  Our forefathers didn't question the messages they received.  They TRUSTED them.  It seems they "heard" their spirits.

In some ways, life is not so different today.  For the most part we have food and protection but we too are consumed with survival.  In this age of corporate downsizing, high crime rates, and an ever increasing cost of living we concern ourselves with a different kind of survival, yet survival nonetheless.

We enjoy significant advances in technology, medicine and science.  They have allowed us to live longer and to seemingly understand more.  But our advances in these areas seem to have cost us the intimacy we once had with our souls.  Our belief in intuition and hunches was replaced by a belief in science and all of the answers that it provided.  Today, we find ourselves smarter and more evolved than our ancestors could have ever hoped to be but there's still a LOT we don't understand.  We don't have ALL of the answers.

That missing information seems to have brought us full circle.  We've progressed exponentially; yet once again we are longing to look inward to help us make sense out of all we can't figure out with science.  We are searching for a QUALITY of life that can only be created by our spirits and through our spirits---and we know it!  But we think we must first "find" them, again.

The irony is, you don't need to "find" your spirit; it's been there all along!  You just need to listen to it.  It doesn't speak with words.  It communicates through feelings, intuition, and on occasion, through overwhelming and indescribable joy!

It's easy enough to recognize.  It is goodness and all that is positive in your life.  It is fun and childlike.  To tune into it relearn how to trust yourself and the many "urges", "little voices" and "gut feelings" you have everyday and dismiss as "unscientific".  Stop dismissing them.  Pay attention!  The more you "listen" the easier it will become to hear.  It's like building up a muscle in your body.  Use it and it gets stronger.

So, just for today, have some fun.  Commit to yourself and to your spirit that you'll "hear" what it has to say.  Follow its instructions, wherever they may lead you.  Go with your gut feelings.  Act on your hunches.  Consider the little voices.  Don't question.  Trust…and it will change your life forever!

            HOUSEHOLD HINT OF THE MONTH

If you have a hard time visualizing what those small paint chips at the store will look like on your wall, here's an idea!

Buy a small amount of the paint (such as a pint or quart) and paint a posterboard!

The painted board is large enough to tape up on a wall to give you a good idea of how it will look. You can move the board from wall to wall to see how various lighting conditions will affect the color of paint you have chosen. This is a much better alternative than painting the entire room only to find you can't live with the color.

"Taking Responsibility for Your Life"
By: TS Winslow
*******************************************************

Spill a cup of coffee in your lap and get burned?  That's okay, it's not your fault - sue the restaurant!  Get fired for doing a lousy job?  Go buy a gun and teach your boss a lesson!

We've all read the headlines... it seems we're all victims and no longer accountable for our own lives and
actions.  As long as there are others to blame, we can do just as we please - right?  Wrong.

These examples are extreme, but they do suggest a frightening trend in this country and other parts of the world, where people often see themselves as victims.  And as such, they cease to take responsibility for their lives and actions.  Not only does the world owe them, but if something goes wrong along the way, watch out, because someone besides themselves are going to take the fall and the blame.

One of the most recurrent themes in the letters I receive is that of someone involved in an affair and who now seeks some sort of affirmation that what they're doing is justified.  The most popular excuse is that they, out of no fault of their own, are unhappy and unsatisfied in their current relationship.  My wife just doesn't give me what I need.  My husband spends too much time at the office.  The spark just seems to have vanished from our relationship... yadda., yadda, yadda.

Well it's high time indeed that we stop blaming others for our own indiscretions, mistakes, poor decisions, and bad situations.  Didn't get that promotion at work?  Try working harder.  Denied credit?  Start making your payments on time.  Not happy in your relationship?  How much effort are you really putting into it?

Sure, it's easy to put our heads in the sand and play the victim,  but by doing so, we give up our dignity, our self-respect and our pride. Contrary to popular belief, life isn't easy and no one owes us anything.  The simple truth is; we still have to work and sacrifice for what we want in this world.  If we want success, happiness, fulfillment, etc., it's up to each
of us to go out and fight for it.

Find the courage to face your problems and affect positive change in your life - do it today.

            PARENTING TIP OF THE MONTH

How exactly do you use natural consequences for teens? The natural consequences I recommend when dealing with teens center around "cooperation" in the home. In other words, the parent is telling the child, "If you cooperate with me, I'll cooperate with you." This method is sometimes referred to as "Grandma's Rule."

If your child complains you are asking her to do too many things, then reply, "No problem; but remember, if I can't ask you to do things for me, you can't ask me to do things for you." At first, the teen thinks this is a good deal. But after a while, usually she becomes aware that she's getting the short end of the deal and that the parent does more for her than she realized. Be ready to cooperate once your teen becomes enlightened

Back to School for Less
By Angie Zalewski
Frugal Famly Network, Inc.
http://www.frugalfamilynetwork.com
*******************************************************

As our kids are now back in school, we look at all the bills for clothing, school supplies, and lunch snacks, and wonder if we could have spent less and still sent our children to school well prepared. The answer is YES! Here are three ways to do just that:

1.  Prepare Year Round.
I take the school supply list of the next grade my kids will be in and staple it to a paper grocery sack. As I come across a listed item on sale throughout the year, I pitch it in the sack and cross it off the list. I keep the sack in my closet. Last year I kept it in the garage and found out that glue yellows in the summer heat.

I use this method with other items as well. When I see school clothes at a yard sale, even if they’re larger than the size my boys wear now, I buy it and store it. I also accumulate backpacks and lunch boxes. When school started this year, I had 6 backpacks in our stash. I paid just 25¢ to 50¢ each for them. When I brought them out for the boys to  pick their favorite, their eyes were as big as saucers at the array of choices! Fortunately, they each dove for a different one. I had only $2-$3 invested in these backpacks. I couldn’t have bought ONE new backpack for that price. I'll return the remaining back packs to the closet for upcoming school years.

2.  Shop Your Home First
Frequently, we make the mistake of automatically taking the school supply list to the store and purchasing each item brand new. Think about what’s in your house first.  How many 12 inch rulers do you have in your desk drawer? Do you really need to buy a new one each year? And how about all those pens and pencils? Our desk drawer is literally so full we have a tough time closing it. The same is true for clothing. Inventory what you have first. Your child may not have outgrown everything.

3.  Reuse and Recycle
Your teen may think this is a radical idea, but you don’t need to buy a new backpack if the one you have is still in good condition. Just tell her she’s saving the environment, not to mention money. To save money (and trees) recycle those free folders and notebooks you got at a business meeting into school supplies. Let the kids put stickers or pictures over any company logos. With clothing, the more classic the style, the better. Navy or khaki shorts and pants are in style every year. Standard pullover shirts have been popular since the 60’s. If you have both boys and girls, buy clothing that’s versatile. For example, primary colors are great for shorts, pullover shirts, and T-shirts that can easily be handed down to the next sibling regardless of gender. And white unisex socks are a smart option that will make your dollar go further.

Back-to-school doesn’t have to mean back-in-debt if you use these frugal tips.
