                       WELCOME

You'll notice a few changes to The Balanced Woman this month!  Last month I got a LOT of feedback from you!  I LOVE feedback, particularly when it's constructive (or complimentary <grin>).  So you'll notice a couple of new sections and website updates at the end rather than the beginning.  Let me know what you think!

On to other business...As someone who is committed to ethical business practices on the web, I am a Charter Member of The International Council of Online Professionals (www.i-cop.org).  Now we are holding our first conference for Home-Based Online Businesses in "The Biggest Little City in the World" in September.

The two day conference will be held in Reno, Nevada on September 27-29, 2001.  (Thursday evening to Saturday night)  The cost is LESS than most one day Internet conferences - and the content is priceless!  This price is lower than any such event I've ever seen so I encourage you to attend and have an absolute ball in one of the most entertaining spots in the world!

Each speaker at the iCop Conference will be presenting material never before given at any other Internet conference!  These speakers will tell you the REAL DEAL!  They will speak about and demonstrate the very foundation of what has allowed them to develop successful online businesses -WORKING FROM HOME!

Topics will cover ...
How to Get Top Positions with Yahoo!
How to "Brand" your business
How to Build Dynamic Web Sites
How to Use the "Right Voice" in Your Advertising
How to Build Niche Markets
Techie Stuff for Non-technical People
And MUCH MORE!

Not to mention that this is a HIGHLY entertaining group of top Internet personalities!  Check them out at the URL below.  And speaking of entertainment ...  The Atlantis Casino Resort is FABULOUS!  World Class Casino - Entertainment Fun Center for all ages - Gorgeous Pools - Spa - Health Club - Massage Threrapy -  Musical Cabaret - Night Club - and Outdoor Fun!

If you are not an iCop member yet, attend this conference and receive your first year's membership absolutely FREE - if you wish to join!  (Attendance does not require joining iCop.)  This is a conference you won't want to miss!  Click here to save $200.00 before June 1, 2001:  http://www.iCopConference.com

Feature Article: Two Sides of the Same Coin?
By:  Jacqueline McLaughlin Hale
*******************************************************
As many of you may remember, my son started Kindergarten in September.  In the months that have passed I have come to understand how truly blessed we are.  He has an incredibly committed and wonderful teacher and a class full of involved parents who all get along well and work together for the betterment of the kids' education.

Lately, the moms in the group have been meeting monthly for a "Moms Nite Out".  It has allowed us to get to know each other and share our parenting joys and frustrations.  Last month our conversation centered on our children's unique personality "challenges" at both home and school.

Erin's mom opened the subject.  She was almost embarrassed as she began to talk about her daughter.  Erin is quite bossy and it had turned into a problem in the class.  Among other disruptions, the teacher had to frequently remind her that she's NOT in charge!

Neal's mom chimed in.  Neal, it seems, never stops asking questions.  He hounds and hounds and hounds ANY adult until his questions are answered.  It doesn't matter that it might be quiet time or that he should be working on some class project.  If he has a question--he wants it answered--NOW!

Laura's mom couldn't resist.  Her daughter shies away from groups and instruction.  It is difficult for her to even answer questions when called upon in class.  She stays in the background and observes.

Mattie Jo has difficulty concentrating on assignments.  She's more concerned with what everyone else is doing and that they are happy in their particular endeavors.  Christopher has endless energy!  He could stay on the playground all day without tiring!

And so the evening went, each mom sharing with the others the particular challenges her child presents.  It was not only a way of relating to each other; it was comforting to find solace in the company of other mothers.  I listened intently!

Suddenly, in the midst of all of the discussion it occurred to me that all of the "issues" belonging to all of the children discussed could actually be strengths waiting to be developed!  If channeled in the right way, Erin's bossiness can bloom into leadership that the world so desperately needs.  She could head a corporation, inspire a church or go into the legislature and facilitate tremendous cultural changes.

Neal's hounding can grow into a scientific mind that never stops questioning until answers are discovered.  He could cure cancer, stop Alzheimer's or put an end to birth defects.  Neal could be this country's greatest researcher yet.

Laura's hesitation could evolve into observation.  She could become a psychologist, a psychiatrist, a member of the clergy or any other profession that requires her to listen and to observe.  She could end up helping hundreds find their own way through life a little more happily.

Mattie Jo could aid others in feeling more comfortable in uncomfortable situations.  She could use her talents to reach out to the homeless, to the battered or to the abused.  She could make a real difference in countless lives by sharing her sincere and caring nature over and over again.

Christopher could end up being a professional athlete entertaining thousands with his unique talents, skills and boundless energy.

Each of these kids could change the world, in their own special way, for the better.  In the meantime, they may annoy us and challenge our patience.  When they do we seem to be able to remind ourselves that their undesirable behaviors can be shaped into something better and are really nothing more than a natural part of the growth process.  Sooner or later they will gain the life experiences that will change their shortcomings, one way or another, forever.

If only we gave ourselves this kind of latitude.  But we don't.  When we find a "flaw" within our own personalities we berate ourselves, over and over again.  We stay focused on what is "wrong".  We wonder how we could have been so stupid or behaved so badly.  We replay it in our minds.

Instead, we could simply acknowledge it and remember that it too can be shaped into something better.  We could remind ourselves that it is nothing more than a natural part of the growth process.  We could accept the life experiences necessary to change it one way or another, forever.

Imagine how much better our lives would be if we approached our "weaknesses" in this manner!  We'd end up happier and more self-confident!  And those qualities could end up propelling us into achieving feats we never dreamed possible!  We could change our lives and maybe the world around us, for the better!

My son is always in his own world.  He can tell you hours and hours of stories about landing on the moon, flying with a squadron of bombers or jumping over the rainbow.  And yes, it gets to me at times.  But someday I could be the mother of the next George Lucas.  You just never know…
