Feature Article: I Never Believed in Magic
By:  Jacqueline McLaughlin Hale
*******************************************************

I never believed in magic.  Most analytical thinkers don't.  And I was trained to be an analytical thinker.  It comes in handy in business, when financing a major purchase, when completing a tax return, paying bills or choosing investment options.  All of these are skills necessary to survive.  So, it follows that analytical thinking is a great survival tool.

But thanks to evolution, modern technology and a plethora of conveniences, life has come to encompass more than just survival.  It is also about joy and beauty in the unusual and in the mundane.  Too often these qualities are overlooked by an analytical mind.  Sometimes, it takes a little magic to find the extraordinary in the ordinary.

Yes, magic.

Magic is the airplane flying overhead.  There it is, a multi ton machine, filled with hundreds of people, high in the sky.  It performs with amazing precision as it goes up and down at the will of the pilot and the air traffic controllers who determine its movements.  Sure there are aeronautical engineers and physicists out there who can explain this phenomenon with rules and laws and science.  But none of that matters.  That it is in the air at all is amazing---and magic.

Magic is the lone tomato plant growing wild in a field by my house.  It is surrounded by weeds that are dying due to lack of water.  There it is, in the midst of them all, flourishing despite its conditions.  There are probably botanists and horticulturists who can explain this phenomenon.  But it doesn't matter.  That it is growing at all is amazing---and magic.

Magic is the rose bush in my front yard.  It is beautiful with its muted yellow flowers outlined in bright red.  In the midst of construction on my home, it was covered with stucco and paint.  Its water source was turned off.  It is small and scrawny yet it produces the most gorgeous blooms in the yard.  I'm sure there are gardeners who can explain this phenomenon.  But it doesn't matter.  That it is flowering at all is amazing---and magic.

Magic is my young son's ability to forgive.  He can be teased and treated badly by the other kids in the neighborhood yet he doesn't get angry or upset.  He shrugs it off and asks to play with those same children again the very next day.  There are psychologists and psychiatrists who can explain this phenomenon.  But it doesn’t matter.  That he can forgive that easily is amazing---and magic.

Magic is the joy and the wonder in life.  It is there before us everyday.  It is in our yards, in our homes, at the store, at work and on the freeway.  It is everywhere, all the time.  But as long as we go through life with our analytical minds at the helm, we will miss it and dismiss it.  It doesn't always make sense.  Often it cannot be explained.  It just is.

Perhaps we weren't meant to figure it all out.  Perhaps mysteries remain, not to puzzle over, but to appreciate.  Maybe we're not supposed to know how the pyramids were built.  Maybe we're just supposed to wonder.  Maybe we don't wonder enough.

A balanced life requires moderation, even moderation in analytical thinking.  To find joy and beauty it must be suspended occasionally.  And when it is, it will make way for a little bit of wonder, a lot of amazement and a lifetime of magic…

            HOUSEHOLD HINT OF THE MONTH

Be prepared for summer outings by keeping a supply of water bottles and/or juice pouches in the freezer. When you decide to take an impromptu trip to the park or the zoo, you can quickly throw together a picnic lunch. The frozen pouches serve as ice packs and keep the rest of your lunch cold. This is also a perfect way to pack a lunch for a hotday at the beach.

                   FASHION TIPS

Minimize your "figure challenges" by wearing dark colors in those areas.  For example, if you're bigger in the hips and thighs wear dark colored pants.  If you're bigger in the waist, wear darker colored shirts.

At the same time, find your "figure strengths" and wear clothing and accessories to draw attention to them.

            PARENTING TIP OF THE MONTH

Whenever you're going to ask your child to change activities, give them a 5 or 10 minute warning before doing so.  For example, if you're at the park or the swimming pool and you're getting ready to leave, tell them you'll be leaving in 5 or 10 minutes.  Then wait approximately that amount of time before pulling them away.  It will give them time to transition and make life infinitely easier for you!

                Pampering Yourself

Is having the kids around all the time getting to you?  Are you ready for school to start again?  If the summer has you stressed out, take a bath!  Make it a truly pampering experience.  Take in candles, champagne, wine, your favorite music, a good book, a relaxing magazine or nothing at all.  Use your best bubble bath, bath salts, bath oil beads or fragrance.  Create an atmosphere that spoils you the most.  And be sure to lock the door!!

               A Little Laughter

Ten Rules of Housekeeping

1. Vacuuming too often weakens the carpet fibers. Say this with a serious face, and shudder delicately whenever anyone mentions Carpet Fresh.

2. Dust bunnies cannot evolve into dust rhinos when disturbed. Rename the area under the couch "The Galapagos Islands" and claim an ecological exemption.

3. Layers of dirty film on windows and screens provide a helpful filter against harmful and aging rays from the sun. Call it an SPF factor of 5 and leave it alone.

4. Cobwebs artfully draped over lampshades reduces the glare from the bulb, thereby creating a romantic atmosphere. If your husband points out that the light fixtures need dusting, simply look affronted and exclaim, "What? And spoil the mood?"

5. In a pinch, you can always claim that the haphazard tower of unread magazines and newspapers next to your chair provides the valuable Feng Shui aspect of a tiger, thereby reducing your vulnerability. Roll your eyes when you say this.

6. Explain the mound of pet hair brushed up against the doorways by claiming you are collecting it there to use for stuffing handsewn play animals for underprivileged children.

7. If unexpected company is coming, pile everything unsightly into one room and close the door. As you show your guests through your tidy home, rattle the door knob vigorously, fake a growl and say, "I'd love you to see our Den, but Fluffy hates to be disturbed and the shots are SO expensive."

8. If dusting is REALLY out of control, simply place a showy urn on the coffee table and insist that "THIS is where Grandma wanted us to scatter her ashes..."

9. Don't bother repainting. Simply scribble lightly over a dirty wall with an assortment of crayons, and try to muster a glint of tears as you say, "Junior did this the week before that unspeakable accident... I haven't had the heart to clean it..."

10. Mix one-quarter cup pine-scented household cleaner with four cups of water in a spray bottle. Mist the air lightly. Leave dampened rags in conspicuous locations. Develop an exhausted look, throw yourself onto the couch, and sigh, "I clean and I clean and I still don't get anywhere..."
