Feature Article: Maximize Your Moments
By:  Jacqueline McLaughlin Hale
*******************************************************

With our increasingly hectic lifestyles, it's becoming more and more important to get the most out of every moment.  By learning to function efficiently you can get more done in less time.  The following are 14 suggestions for "Maximizing Your Moments".

Maximize Your Moments While You're Stuck in Traffic

1. Listen to a book on tape.  It allows you to learn something new or to "read" that book you've always wanted to "read".

2. Tape-record your thoughts.  Come on, don't you do your best thinking while you're alone in the car?  Maybe you can't jot your thoughts down but you can record them away.  Do this and you won't have to worry about forgetting whatever it is you must remember or that perfect solution to the problem you've been working on or that great new idea!  Tape recording gets things off your mind and creates a lasting record for you.

3. Use the time on your way home from work to think about your family and other things that make you happy.  By "winding down" in the car you'll arrive home ready to greet your family refreshed from the day.

4. Keep a running list of errands in the car.  If you've always got a list in front of you you'll be reminded of what you need to do.  Then when you're out you can get a few of those things done, as it's convenient for you!

Maximize Your Moments At Home

5. Screen your calls.  Let the answering machine pick them up.  If you get one that is that important, the caller will leave a message.  You can choose to interrupt the message and answer it or let it go and return the call at your convenience.  Think about how many sales calls you'll miss that way!

6. Clean the kitchen as you cook.  My mom used to wait until a meal was over to do all the dishes and put everything away.  When I moved out on my own I found it was much more efficient to clean as I cooked.  What do I mean?  Well, when you're waiting for water to boil you can quickly clean other pots or pans you've already used.  When you're sautéing onions you can put away ingredients.  When your meal is cooking in the oven you can wash, dry and put away dishes used already.  Make use of those previously wasted minutes here and there and when your meal is concluded, most of the clean up will be too!

7. Write all schedules, events and appointments down.  It will prevent you from over booking your family or forgetting something entirely.  Relying on your memory is inefficient.  Don't do it.  That's what calendars are for!

8. Learn to say "No" and STOP over committing yourself!  An easy way to "ease' into this is to practice saying, "Let me check my calendar and get back to you."  This buys you some time to think about what you REALLY want to do.  And if you don't want to do it, all you have to say is "Thanks for thinking of me but I really can't right now".  That's it!  Nothing more!  For some reason we seem to feel that we owe the other person long, drawn out explanations.  We don't.  No thank you is good enough.  Get over it!  Just say no!

Maximize Your Moments By Organizing your Home

9. Go to a hardware store and buy an inexpensive plastic set of drawers.  These drawers are normally used to store nails and screws.  However, you can use them for earrings, pins and necklaces!  There are probably many more wonderful uses for them too.  Be creative!  Fill them up!

10. Hang belts on a nail hammered into the wall of your closet.  Frees up room in drawers.

11. When you rotate your clothes for spring and fall, clean out anything you did not wear during the last season.  Face it, you probably won't wear those things again.  Why clutter up your closet?  Donate them and help others!

Maximize Your Moments While You Wait

12. Work on your budget.  Create it, review it, update it--whatever you have to do.  Hate budgets??  Who doesn't!  But creating one and sticking to it will give you control over your finances and peace of mind like nothing else!

13. Balance your checkbook.  You should be doing it monthly anyway.  Why not do it while you wait!

14. If you work outside the home, take office memos or necessary reading to doctors or dentists offices and read while you wait.  Don't you have a stack of reading that you want to get to when you can?  Everyone does!  Take it to appointments and get something done, while you wait.

            PARENTING TIP OF THE MONTH

The easiest way to get your children up and off to school in the mornings is to know their particular "wake up styles".  Some people like to sleep as late as they can, pop out of bed and move directly into getting ready for the day.  Other people like to lay around, take their time, and ease into the morning routine.

If you have a son who likes to lay around, wake him up earlier and give him time to lounge.  If you have a daughter who likes to sleep as late as she can, wake her up at the last possible minute.

               A Little Laughter

Humor: The 5 Toughest Questions That Women Ask Men

The questions are:

            1. What are you thinking about?
            2. Do you love me?
            3. Do I look fat?
            4. Do you think she is prettier than me?
            5. What would you do if I died?

What makes these questions so difficult is that every one is guaranteed to explode into a major argument if the man answers incorrectly (i.e., tells  the truth). Therefore, as a public service, each question is analyzed below, along with possible
responses.

Question # 1: What are you thinking about?

The proper answer to this, of course, is: "I'm sorry if I've been pensive, dear. I was just reflecting on what a warm, wonderful, thoughtful, caring, intelligent woman you are, and how lucky I am to have met you."

This response obviously bears no resemblance to the true answer, which most likely is one of the following:
A. Baseball.
B. Football.
C. How fat you are.
D. How much prettier she is than you.
E. How I would spend the insurance money if you died.

(Perhaps the best response to this question was offered by a TV sitcom, where the husband told his wife, "If I wanted you to know what I was thinking, I would be talking to you!")

Question # 2: Do you love me?
The proper response is: "YES!" or, if you feel a more detailed answer is in order, "Yes, dear."

Inappropriate responses include:
A. I suppose so.
B. Would it make you feel better if I said yes?
C. That depends on what you mean by love.
D. Does it matter?
E. Who, me?

           Question # 3: Do I look fat?

The correct answer is an emphatic: "Of course not!"

Among the incorrect answers are:
A. Compared to what?
B. I wouldn't call you fat, but you're not exactly thin.
C. A little extra weight looks good on you.
D. I've seen fatter.
E. Could you repeat the question? I was just thinking about how I would spend the insurance money if you died.

Question # 4: Do you think she's prettier than me?

Once again, the proper response is an emphatic: "Of course not!"

Incorrect responses include:
A. Yes, but you have a better personality
B. Not prettier, but definitely thinner
C. Not as pretty as you when you were her age
D. Define pretty
E. Could you repeat the question? I was just thinking about how I would spend the insurance money if you died.

Question# 5: What would you do if I died?

A definite no-win question. (The real answer, or course, is "Buy a Sports Car.") No matter how you answer this, be prepared for at least an hour of follow-up questions, usually along the these lines:

Woman: Would you get married again?
Man: Definitely not!

W: Why not, don't you like being married?
M: Of course I do.

W: Then why wouldn't you remarry?
M: Okay, I'd get married again.

W: You would? (with a hurtful look on her face)
M: Yes, I would.

W: Would you sleep with her in our bed?
M: Where else would we sleep?

W: Would you put away my pictures, and replace them with pictures of her?
M: That would seem like the proper thing to do.

W: And would you let her use my golf clubs?
M: Of course not, Dear. She's left-handed.
