                       WELCOME

Well, here we are.  It's almost October and those terrible tragedies of September 11th happened close to a month ago.  The generosity of the world wide community in response to these events has been remarkable and awe-inspiring but unfortunately, there will always be those few who try to take advantage of the rest of us who want to help.

So, please do not give or pledge money over the phone.  If you'd like to contribute or help in any way, you can start at http://redcross.org/  There's also been a fund established to help the families of the New York firefighters.  You can find that at http://store.yahoo.com/firedonations/

Meanwhile, the best thing we can all do is "go on".  When we don't "they" win over and over again.  You'll read a little more about that in the feature article :)

Since it's October, I thought you might enjoy a link to a great Halloween site.  It's family friendly and loaded with games, activities, articles, recipes, costumes and more.  It's at http://www.halloweenmagazine.com/

I know that many of you do not recognize Halloween and so I tried to come up with a good link for Harvest Festivals.  But all I could find were promotional pages for Harvest festivals in specific areas.  Maybe next year someone will have created a really great Harvest Festival site.

Until next month enjoy this issue!
jackie

PS  Don't forget, our site updates and easy recipe of the month are at the end.

Feature Article: To Honor Our Heroes
By:  Jacqueline McLaughlin Hale
*******************************************************

Ever since the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, I've been searching for the right words to write.  Yet, I find myself wondering how there can be the "right" words for such a terrible atrocity.  Besides, so many beautiful sentiments have been so eloquently expressed already.  I'm not sure I can add anything more meaningful.  But at the same time I can't shake the feeling that there is more to be said, more to be acknowledged and more to be brought forth.

The heroism of the American people is beyond comprehension.  The efforts of the rescue personnel are astounding.  The spirit of humanity everywhere, is overwhelming.  I want to be a part of it all, part of the unity, part of the relief and part of the solution.  But at nearly 3,000 miles away, it is difficult to do.

That's when it occurred to me that the one thing we can all do is honor the lives that were lost and the lives that continue to fight so hopefully for survivors.  We can honor them, by going on.  Yes, going on.  No, we cannot go on in the same way.  Right now the only certainty is that nothing will ever be the same again.  However, we can go on even better and stronger than ever before.  How?  By maintaining that spirit that we all share, by continuing to give like the rescuers and like those who gave their lives.  We may not be able to give as monumentally but we can give in smaller ways each and every day.

We can give a warm smile to that stranger we pass on the street.  We can give a little space to the car in front of us that is trying to change lanes.  We can give a pedestrian the time to cross the street.  We can slow down in residential neighborhoods and give children the gift of life.

We can give an open ear to a friend who may just need to talk.  We can give a "thank you" to the men and women who educate our kids.  We can give a "hello" to our neighbors.  We can give hugs to our family.  We can give "I love you's" more often.  We can give time to those who matter the most.  We can give the benefit of the doubt.  We can give forgiveness.  We can give love.

We can give to honor our heroes.  We can give because it's the right thing to do. We can give because they did.  We can give for them.  And if we give freely and with open hearts, over time we'll create communities, states and countries that are stronger and more compassionate than ever before.  We can make the world a better place.  We can make a difference.  We are proving that now...

            HOUSEHOLD HINT OF THE MONTH

This month's household hint is from a subscriber!  This is what she wrote...

Hello...I recently had gum in my dryer and I read the tips you have in order to remove gum on your site.  I have since discovered a new one and felt you may want to include it on your website.

Wet a fabric softener sheet and wipe at the gum in your dryer and you will discover with hardly any effort at all the gum amazingly disappears.  The great thing about it too is it smells nice and there is no messy clean up after you are finished.

I just wanted to pass along my recent discovery and thought maybe you could include it on your website.

Thanks

Mary C. Lee

Thank YOU Mary!

                   FASHION TIPS

The “Rules of Shoes”“I did not have three thousand pairs of shoes.  I had one thousand and sixty.” --Imelda Marcos

For some, it's an obsession.  For others, it's merely a necessity.  For those of us somewhere in the middle,
it's a sometime source of consternation. What am I talking about?  Shoes!

Whether you love them, couldn't care less, or are somewhere in between, there's no denying that shoes
can make or break an ensemble.  While choosing the right style is important, so is caring for your foot and your budget.

Here are some “best buy” guidelines:

1.  If you can only afford one good shoe, make it a closed-toe pump in black or taupe (cool) or beige
(warm).  These seasonless neutrals will blend with everything in your wardrobe, and work well with either skirts or pants.

2.  Shoe color should be the same value or darker than your hemline.  This grounds the look without calling attention to your feet.

3.  A 1-1/2 – 2” heel is flattering to most legs. Wear a minimum of 1” if you are heavy, short, or short
legged to elongate the leg and make you look taller and trimmer.

4.  A 3” heel is the maximum height for business. Stilettos are not appropriate, unless your job
involves standing on a street corner.

5.  The more foot that shows, the less businesslike the shoe.  Sandals, mules, and T-straps are not
appropriate for business.  However, a closed-toe, sling back pump is acceptable in most business settings.

6.  If you have large legs, avoid T-straps or ankle straps, wide heels, and round or square toes.  These
styles visually enlarge legs and widen the foot.

7.  Buy the best you can afford in materials that will span the seasons.  Although it will cost more up
front, it's the best investment of your money in the long run.

In short, think before you buy.  How much wear will you get from this shoe?  Will it last this season or
several seasons?  Does it go with at least three outfits in your closet?  If it's not a good investment, don't buy it.  Your money is better spent elsewhere.

            PARENTING TIP OF THE MONTH

HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS

1.   Make sure your child wears light or reflective substances on their costume.
2.   Avoid masks or anything that will obstruct their vision.
3.   Provide an adult chaperone for your children when they are out "trick or treating."
4.   Do NOT allow your child to eat any candy until they bring it home and you have inspected it.
5.   Send your child "trick or treating" with a flashlight.
6.   Remind them to "stop, look and listen before they cross the street"
7.   Explain to your children that cars may have a difficult time seeing them  at night and encourage them to be extra cautious
      because of this.
8.   Give them a Halloween curfew.

               A Little Laughter

A wife went to the police station with her next-door neighbor to report that her husband was missing. The policeman asked for a description. She said, "He's 35 years old, 6 foot 4, has dark eyes, dark wavy hair, an athletic build, weighs 185 pounds, is soft-spoken, and is good to the children."

The next-door neighbor protested, "Your husband is 5 foot 4, chubby, bald, has a big mouth, and is mean to your children." The wife replied, "Yes, but who wants HIM back?"
